I ‘m from México and I used to buy my kayaks from Academy, my first one was the speck (great surf kayak) then the drifter (very stable) and finally bought a P13 Angler, I ‘ve installed a rudder, a fishfinder on a Scotty triple rod holder, very easy to rig, what a nice kayak for any aplication.

I've been on bass boats, pontoons, big ships you name it... I love being on the water but the best way to experience it is definitely by kayaks.
At least in my opinion

Okay.
As some one who is just beginning to take kayaking, and fishing seriously, (I've had 3 inexpensive kayaks, from Academy, but never really took kayaking very seriously,) and is on a budget, and Academy is the closest place to me to get a kayak, I have to agree. These are some of the best kayaks, available in my area. While these are still out of my price range, (and I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it yet,) I just bought one of the $250.00 Pelican Kayaks, to see if this is something I'm into. My question is, is this $250 Kayak, going to be able to handle being put in the surf, of is it better to stay in the bays with it? I've been surf fishing, since I was 8. The idea, is that, I will be using this kayak, to paddle bait out, through the surf, and a little in the bay to fish from. Thanks for any help!

The Redfish line by Heritage were great boats by Native.
Pescador is a clone of a clone of wilderness systems. Perception was Wildy’s economy line but really out preformed the tarpons.
OK is definitely the best yak Academy carries and I’m not even a OK guy.

A lot of folks don’t realize you can take the seats out of these boats and with a few pad eyes in the right places put a better aftermarket seat in them.

Great video bro wondering if you can give me some advice. I’m thinking of purchasing a kayak from academy I’ve never tried kayaking and we have only one small lake very small where I live. I’d like to get into this as a hobby to relax but I really don’t know what to look for. I’m 6ft 225 pounds and all I know if I want a sit on top kayak. I only have a budget of $300 max but I’m worried that maybe I’d only get garbage with that budget. Any advice that you can give me I’ll take it. As far as fishing from it yea from time to time but more of just ridding the water

I'm not into fishing just recreational kayaking. I had an older model Pelican sit inside and was good to learn in. But now I am looking at the Perception brand of either the 10 foot Pescador or the 9.5 Tribe. I am leaning towards the Pescador since it is available at my Academy and for $500. I did watch this video and saw your choices but in recreational sit on top kayaking is the Pescador still a good one?

In regards to my last comment a week ago, I actually sold my buddy the heritage angler 10 and bought the ocean kayak prowler 13. Taken it out only 1 time so far, but I love it. Great kayak to fish from. Feels really stable and somewhat comfortable. For me being 6’5” I felt like I needed a longer kayak. The seat not being secured at the bottom is a PITA tho. Otherwise, toon your advice got the prowler 13 and plan to take it out to PINS here in Corpus Christi and see what fish I can catch ow not being limited to the shore anymore. Appreciate the advice and keep up the great videos!

There are so many choices, I am also trying to look into these new small fishing boats. I have watched on Youtube. There are a lot of small companies out there making some great products. Please give your opinion on the question above.

That Magellan Origin, the academy brand, is the same mold as the Perception Pescador. I was just as academy today and they had them side by side. The only differences I could see was 1) the pescador has a sacrificial keel and the origin doesn't 2) the academy kayak has the rod holders molded in whereas the pescador has flush mount ones installed. But the Origin is over $100 less. But having a sacrificial keel might be worth it to some folks.

I own several Pescadora 12 angler kayaks. They track well in a wind, cut through the water quickly. While stable for an experienced kayak fisherman, they may not be so for a novice kayak fisherman.....so my advice is no sudden moves. These Kayaks are typically on sale the week before Memorial Day at Academy. The Pescadora 12 is typically priced at $399...... which is a steal deal. You will never be disappointed with their performance on the water. I've been fishing from one for over 3 years now.......and I know to get a better kayak.....I would have to pay $1200 or more. I probably fish out of my Pescadora Angler 100 days out of the year. For the money........there is none better.

My first Kayak was the Perception Pescador Angler 12 sit on. I purchased it 2 years ago at Academy for $329, marked down. I liked it so much I went out and bought a 2017 Hobie Outback. Great video. I fish out of both with my son and think I'm going to pull them down to Gulf Shores this summer from Kansas. I know the Pescador will handle the back bay, but will it handle offshore? I replaced the seat with a boat seat for comfort and it still handles the KS waters great. I thought about making DIY outriggers for the offshore fishing? Any recommendations or do I een need them if we launch off the beach?

I started with the same kayak and also ended up getting a 2017 Outback. I used my Pescador for lake fishing in Texas, brought it here to Pensacola and used it offshore with nothing added except a cheap fishfinder and a milk crate. Im 6'3" 185lbs and it did great offshore. I still use it when we have guests (who are using the Outback), still havent flipped it once (lake fishing, offshore, or in the surf) going on 7-8 years now...knock on wood. You should be fine in light to moderate surf.

Thanks for the video. I love the advice given on another of your videos. Wait until September and buy someone else’s dream that sat in the garage all summer and wifey poo wants it gone because it was never used. You also eluded to a shiny new kayak is Not shiny after the first slimy (fish caught) and beach sand everywhere. Love your practical advice. It makes me chuckle.

I just recently bought my first kayak on craigslist. It was a perception sport striker for $185. Took it out and hated it. I felt very top heavy and like i was going to roll it and the cockpit was too narrow for my legs it killed my hips. Im a bigger guy 320 so its appeal was the 500lb capacity had great reviews. My wife however loves it so my kayak became hers. I had been researching
yaks for a while. U didnt want to spend more than 1k so i decided on the field and stream shadow caster. I got it at Dicks and i took it out and i absolutely love it. Its stable enough for my big ass to stand on and fish.

Ocean Kayak Big Game Prowler 2 13' is the one I bought to start. Rudder yes! Upgraded seat was a must for me. I'm 220 pounds and been out in some rolling seas off shore Manzanillo Mexico(where I do all my kayak fishing). New to the sport and must say the boat gives me confidence. I hooked into something about 40-50 lbs in size rooster fish shape but not quite. This thing pulled me around like I was running a 9.9 kicker lol. Not once did I have a thought cross my mind the boat wasn't big enough. Wasn't cheap but its an upgrade from the one you mention. Love the sport, love the boat just wish I could spend more time in Mexico. Insert sad face here. Solid advice in the video!

I was in that store yesterday. I was surprised there were no pedal offerings. First time fishing off Pensacola Beach from my new Hobie Compass today . Didn't catch anything, but really loved the pedal drive option (my other kayak is paddle). Nothing wrong with starting out with a less expensive paddle kayak, but I can see why the pedal kayak is something to aspire to.

Last November we bought a Pelican Apex 100 (sit on top) at Academy for our 11 yr old grandson. Plenty stable for him, and a good rig to learn in. We've added a centerline mounted Railblaza rod holder, bungee hold-downs on the foredeck, a bungee paddle holder, and rigged a milk crate with a Yak Attack double rod holder in the rear tank well, even though the rig comes with two flush mounted rod holders. The next thing we need to do is upgrade the stock seat. Also found that the practice (foam) golf balls (also bought at Academy) work well as scupper plugs.

Good choice lol I just got the OK prowler for Christmas and I couldn’t be happier. It’s amazing in high winds high current and big surf. SUPER FAST and tracks so well. Wilderness Systems and Perception have the same parent company. That is why the perception pilot pro pedal drive and the wilderness helix drive look almost the same except for how one retracts vertically and the other leans at an angle. That pescador 12 is great though
My dad has one and I used it last January. It was fast and really stable.

I got the heritage Redfish kayak 12 you we're recommending, off Craigslist with a paddle & upgraded seat for $350. Ive DEFINITELY got my money's worth out of it going on 4 years now. It's as fast as my buddies hobie compass (with turbo fins), it's stable & its held its own in the bays & the jetty. & im a 210 lb dude. Not to mention it gets me out there on the water & have caught tons of fish in it here in NC. My buddy who has had numerous kayaks & now a hobie says he wishes he woulda got the heritage Redfish when he 1st started out. For all you get out of it the price just can't be beat!
