How often do you pop the zip tie unintentionally? I do like the idea of the swivel to reduce twist I’m going to have to re rig my anchor with one now

I seem to recall a zip-tie breaking unexpectedly once. I don't remember exactly why though. It's rare. The swivel helps for sure, those anchors come up spinning like helicopters!

Anchor trolleys are great for lakes, not so much in rivers with decent current. In the time you have to pull the anchor you must move the trolley to within reach (the side of the yak). If the anchor is hung up at all you are now pulling against a set anchor from the side of your kayak. Just food for thought. I anchor off the bow or stern only in rivers.

I rarely ever even bring an anchor river fishing and I always advise newcomers against it. I do use my trollies a lot in rivers for clipping off to brush piles and stickups though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Awesome tips! I'm new to kayak fishing and just bought my first one a few weeks ago. Also, I believe the term you were looking to use was potential energy, not kinetic. It's not kinetic until release.

What about adding a shackle by the flukes and attaching a chain from there to the swivel then the ziptie and your standard rope with a float? That way if you have to drop the anchor you can use a magnet to come back and help retrieve it. Great design i will be using this design for my setup, maybe with my mods, Thanks for the vid.

I really wish i would have seen your video before my first kayak fishing trip last week! I hadn't been on a kayak in years, and never one with an anchor! Long story short,it came down to my (thankfully) very level-headed boyfriend insisting to just cut the line before we had a real crisis. You really don't realize how much you're tipping when you are pulling on the line! Neither of us could pop it without sending one of us into the water. Thanks for the tip! I think I'll be adding a float to the line too,just in case i need to detach fast. I somehow ended up scary close to some trees! Yikes

Hey brother, only question i have for you is how often do you use the chain add on? I see a good handful of people who don't use a chain at all and then I see an equal amount that use the chain all the way down the shaft of the anchor at all times.

The chain is cumbersome, it's added weight to carry around, and it can be noisy, so I always have it with my gear in the truck but I don't bring it out on the water unless I think I'm going to need it. Generally speaking, the shallower the lake, the less the need for the chain, but that need increases as the windspeed does. The purpose of the chain is to keep the anchor lying flat so it stays dug into the bottom. Deeper water, or roller waves, causes the anchor to tend to want to lift up and pop free, so the added weight of the chain offsets that. Most of my lake fishing is in water 20' or less. I use the chain maybe 25-33% of the time that I'm anchoring. That's why I like being able to take it off when I don't need it. I sort of rambled on a bit here didn't I...

Thanks for the video. Regarding the line that is attached to the anchor, will you a1/4 in (6.4mm) polypropylene rope be ok? I also like the idea of switching between the “only rope system” and the “chain + rope system” depending on what I will do, ocean or lake. Thanks again for the useful ideas.

polypropylene floats and doesn't wear very well. I'm sure it would work but there would be better polyester or nylon options that would be easier to manage and last longer.

Saltwater is outside my area of expertise. My guess is that either would be fine as long as you rinse them off with fresh water after your outings.

The best anchor video out there. I'm new to kayaking, and I'm going to setup my anchor like yours. Makes sense. Do you think you could make a video on the right and safest way to rig the anchor to the kayak? I've seen a lot of guys rig theirs directly to the ring on the anchor trolly and have no method to quickly jettison the anchor in case of a problem.

Anyplace that sells horse supplies will have panic snaps. They can be easily released under tension. I place the panic snap in line about a foot from the trolly. The anchor line has a foam float so I can recover it.

Ok, first of all let me say that your hair is freaking tight in this vid Bro. Damn son. Seriously, what is the product? I like what I use but I'm always looking for other good stuff. Don't think I didn't notice that you had a haircut in this vid because I'm an observant man. Now the anchor. I like your concept. I fish in some different types of water but concept is same. I will say this, I have downsized my cable tie to a smaller one than you use. They are amazingly strong when trying to break.

You're not the first alpha male to be reduced to envy by this mane of mine! You're right about those ties being strong. And the reality is that the tensile strength can very from what they say on the package. Always good to do a little testing to be sure you get what's going to work for you.

What size anchor do you usually run on fast moving water?

That's a good question. Tethering your kayak to the river bottom in swift current is unreasonably dangerous in my opinion. I never anchor in those conditions. Instead I use a brush clip, bank-anchor or stake-out pole. The when, where and how about anchoring is a larger topic and probably deserves a follow up video of it's own. I wanted to keep this one focused just on rigging the anchor. The anchor I use when I do use one is a 3 lb grapple.
