Thanks for the review. How long does it generally take to inflate? Do you really need the fin/skeg to track straight?

*****IMPORTANT!!!! *****I am not sure why you didn't mention that there is a valve in the very back that must be closed before getting into the water. Come on dude, that is crucial for ppl to know! It's in the back, it's a white valve that must be closed completely before entering the water. It's on the floor at the back on the floor, in between the v shape.. At the back.

how fast is this compared to hard kayaks?

I bought 2 of these kayaks. Excellent Kayak no doubt about. I took one out solo into Lake Ontario with 4-5 foot waves and it was a blast!!!. Riding this kayak on bigger waves is very different than paddling and riding a hard kayak. You must let the Kayak float down the Waves sideways so that the kayak moulds itself into the wave. Everyone had a blast out in Lake Erie Ontario. We were out at least 2 km off the beach area ( away from the bigger waves). I will not lie here it takes more skill to control the inflatable kayaks ( even with skeg attached) than a normal solid kayak due to the weight factor.

I had a K1 ..and was not that great - chinamade - ..and with the heat in summer seams are opening up and no chance coming with patching behind

You have to be careful in the hot weather as the air will expand so you can not pump it up completely ( hard when pressed by finger). Usually in 80+ weather I pump it up and my finger goes in easily 1 inch at least. This way the seams last years.

Found a good answer on Amazon:

"I own both kayaks and I would rather go with the Explorer for kayaking, the reason is that the Explorer is self bailing has better seats that raise you out of the water in the bottom of the boat, it has an upturned nose to keep water from splashing you, and the paddles are better quality. I have taken the explorer down a class 3 river in Idaho with no problems. Take the skeg off if you do rivers, will just cause you problems if you don't, mainly you will loose it. Only use the skeg in lakes or ponds"

It's possible use it alone? One pilot can drive this kayak comfortably or it want necessarily 2 people? Thanks

Does anyone know where I can find another SKAG/FINN? Mine fell off after the first time! Very frustrating because the manufacturer says that they are out of stock and will be 4 to 6 weeks before they get more in. you would think they would fix this defect, It obviously happens allot or the Skag would not be on back order !..My Kayak did great though, felt very safe and was in the ocean...

+DjVirusPL Hi, i just bought this kayak last week and so far my girlfriend and I have used it twice, the second time being a 14km coast trip with a little choppy water. It's a little slower over the waves than a normal solid kayak, but other than that it was great. it's very stable (we both managed to stand in it on a lake. The skeg works really well and make's it easy to control together (without it for us non experienced users not so easy ;) ). As well as portability it has other advantages over a normal kayak, it's much more flexible, if you want just one seat, you only have to put one.. if you want more storage behind and less foot room you can. If you want to lay back in the kayak with someone special, say in the middle of a lake.. you can also.. ;)

As for this model vs the other one, I also had that dilemma and was also attracted to the net of the Challenger.. but i was able to speak to intex Spain directly and they told me that the Explorer was a lot stronger and, in the guys own words, compared to the Challenger, the Explorer made it look more like a toy.

I must say after having used it at sea and seen it in person, I'm glad i bought the Explorer. At the end of the day I'm not so sure the net would be that useful anyway, especially at sea.. it just doesn't look that serious.. like the rest of the kayak. The Explorer has plenty of places both front and back where you can hook small carribeners.. so that's what i've done, I then use strong 3mm cord to tiy things down. I used a waterproof bag (mines for wet suites) and a plastic waterproof container to store stuff.

I have an air compressor and a portable tank to hold 5 gallons@125psi. Is there a way to attach something like that to do most of the filling quickly before switching to the pump?
somanythings
somanythings - 9 years ago
the only thing i'm facing with compressor: it pumps a hot air throw so by the time the air get colder and smaller in size as a result i don't get the pursuer i need ,, i solve this by having the hose onboard  and fill it up later

The weight capacity is given to by the manufacturer and is the recommended weight limit. You can still use the boat if over the weight limit but it may not perform as needed. You still won't sink but it will put extra stress that it is not designed to hold.
HobbyMan
HobbyMan - 10 years ago
I understand the alleged max weight capacity is 350 lbs, is that an absolute, tested measurement, or more like an extremely conservative estimate, due to liability issues? Because I see similar sized or smaller inflatable kayaks from other companies say max weight: 400 lbs. Does that mean if I weigh 200 lbs, and my friend weighs 230 lbs, as soon as we both sit in this Kayak, we will start to sink or roll the boat over?

The Kayak distributes the weight pretty well, even if it was just one person in the back it will not be off balance.

I've ordered an Explorer as well as a challenger, as I'm a lot heavier than my 11 year old daughter will it be better fir her to sit at the back, because the front seat looks pretty central, or does it distribute the kayak distribute the weight well?

Own it (two, actually) .. really amazing. With two people in it tracks amazingly well. With one it's a little "spinny" (can you tell I'm not a kayak-er?) :) but completely controllable. AND FAST. I'm sure compared to a "real" kayak it's a pig, but for my kids and I it's amazing. Super stable. Very comfortable. The floor valve is a pain to deflate, I bought a tough air-line and run it in the hole and outside the boat as I'm folding it, works perfectly.

is the skeg shown available for purchase..that would be one hell of a tracking aide on any inflatable.
