Hey Mark! It’s been a while, I hope you’ve been doing well! I’m still fishing out of a Tarpon 120. It’s a great river kayak! I did add a Power Pole micro anchor to it a couple years ago, that helps give it a little more stability so I can stand up and fish on it.

But then I’d miss out on all that excitement! It’s tough to not leave the lure in the water while in the kayak sometimes though. I go from casting to paddling probably hundreds of times on an average trip. Unless I reel the lure all the way to the rod tip and risk damage that way the lure is going to dangle in the water sometimes while I adjust my position.

Absolutely great. Loved it. The struggle is real when kayak fishing. I know the struggle of culling 100s of hours of video and I can only imagine how much time it took to go back and get all of the shenanigans. I usually delete those clips right away to forget the shame. Your moment at 5:55 is my biggest annoyance - hooked into the yak handles and straps and in the net and it cannot be removed without beaching the yak.. ugh. Keep up the good work - your videos are an inspiration for mine.

It all depends on the current speed. Some spots the current is barely moving and I don’t even really notice it, other spots where it gets shallow and rapid I struggle to make progress upstream or I’ll hop out and pull the kayak when it’s warm out. I’d recommend working your way upstream from the launch whenever possible, then you have an easy time getting back to where you started when it’s time to turn around.

Gotta say, I’ve never cast at, much less CAUGHT my kayak. That was impressive. Just about everything else I’ve done though. And it’s so satisfying to see that I’m not the only one who snags trees, shakes moss off the paddle, misses fish, falls in and gets scared by sudden movement of other animals. Awesome video!

Man, fishing in a kayak makes no sense to me. Too unstable, too cramped. I'd build a boat first, probably for less money. However, I spent the money for a thick-hulled inflatable, which offers excellent stability and more space. Me and my 130lb mutt enjoy our fishing adventures together. The wife joins us when we're just out joyriding.

My only regret is that I didn’t get mine sooner! This footage is from five years of fishing and thousands on hours on the water. I think spending that much time doing anything you’ll have some mistakes. The majority of the time I’m out in the kayak things go well and I have a great time!

There were so many "OH MY GOD!" moments in this video! This was fantastic! Sometimes I feel like I struggle and fight with the stoooopidest stuff, like when you get your plopper hung on the back of your kayak or getting it snagged in a limb over your head. You need to upgrade the Plopper hooks, friend. I only trust the ones that come on the 130 size. Both 90 and 110 need upgrades. Going to try the 75 this year. I'm sure I'll be upgrading the hooks on that too.

The best is when you’re having a great day then you go to make a cast with a bait caster and snag a branch on the back cast without knowing and toss it and zzzzzzzz, and suddenly you have the worlds worst birds nest. Don’t ask me how I know. This is why I always carry two rods when wading.

Thanks! The kayak mounted camera rigs use a GoPro hero 3 and a Zoom H1 for audio, for the hat cam I use a hero 5 with a polarized lens and a Zoom H1/ATR3350 lapel mic.

Had me laughing from the start to the end. I was going to comment before and ask how you never seem to catch limbs and how many of my spooks you have collected over the years. Oh, and that tunnel that goes under that main road always makes me pucker. I dont make it to that river as much as I did in the 90's and early 2000's but I still float the upper reaches every year and wade a few spots in summer.

We had a really scary experience at that bridge one day. My friend who tipped in his kayak at the start of this video brought his wife with and she slammed into the middle of that bridge column on the front side. She fell in and went floating through the tunnel while the kayak got hung up on the front of the bridge. She had a cooler attached with a bungee leash in the rear tank well, it went down one side and the kayak went down the other causing it to get stuck. She was pretty freaked out but made it through ok. Luckily I was behind them so I was able to pull over and climb up on top of the bridge and free her kayak with my paddle.

Do you ever throw braid with you whopper ploppers? And what’s your setup for the whopper plopped ?

The only one I’ve used braid with was a 190 WP on my musky rig. It probably doesn’t make a huge difference with a lure that’s generally worked fast but I still like clear line in the clear water I fish most of the time. The setup I throw the Plopper on is a 6’8” M F St Croix Legend Tournament with a Quantum Smoke SL100HPT reel and 14lb Trilene Sensation.

you keep losing all those fish cause you need to keep your rod tip down, sometimes i even put the whole tip of the pole down in the water. it helps keep the fish down and makes it harder for them to spit the hook

My theory is that the second fish chased the first one back to the kayak and hung out under me eyeing the spook while I held the first one up for the camera. Then as soon as the fish went back into the water and made some surface commotion that second one realized it had competition and smashed the spook. It’s crazy how aggressive smallmouth get when there’s two or more competing for a meal!

I’ve caught a few pike and musky that were around 40” and a catfish that was probably 20lbs. Hopefully this year I can land something bigger, maybe a sturgeon or a giant musky!

This is the REAL video. We videographers tend to cut out the bloops, blunders, thrown lures, bad hooksets, etc. that is all part of fishing. Thanks for the reminder that even the best have days that make you want to swear like a sailor.

I started fishing out of a kayak in 1978. I can relate to almost all of this. I was the only one I knew who fished the pools between rapids in a yak. I even fished the big lakes with giant motorboats trying to turn me over. Thanks for sharing! God is good!

This young angler has made an excellent video about the mishaps of fishing from a kayak, which I can relate to in so many ways. It also points out the fact that he keeps on fishing even though there are some pretty difficult times mixed in. His whopper popper videos are great! Life is very similar in so many ways. ..a lot of great times and success but some hangups, some snags, some breakoffs, missed opportunities etc. Along the way. But..we keep going..we don't quit ! I wasn't trying to offend you with the "God is good! " comment. Neither was I trying to make anything religious. Just being who I am. I will continue to be me.
