Excellent informative clip. The presented is a good communicator. Well done.

I am no expert or I would not be watching the video. That said, it is hard to believe that silicone should not be applied under EACH accessory. Not overly thick, sufficient to 'seal' each new hole.

"Dixon long reach marker" that way you can mark exact hole locations through a narrow deep hole. also useful for dozens of other projects!

You said a 1" wellnut would be better for anchor trolley systems, but during the install you used a 5/8 wellnut to install the pulley. Can you please explain?

In applications where you can use either a wellnut or a rivet which is stronger, more duable and which do you recommend?

fabulous tutorial, best i have seen........ one question, is there any particular reason why you dont let the rivet gun complete its process and instead release the rivet and snap it off by hand?
tylorrichter
tylorrichter - 6 years ago
If i were to guess, it is because the force needed to "POP" the rivet would pull it back through the kayak. A Pop-Rivet gun doesn't actually cut the rivet, rather it pulls to a set breaking point where the rivet itself "pops" or breaks.

i'm 16 min in and still no mention the length or diameter of the rivets:/

So, if you use bolts and nylon washers you don't need to use any sealant? The anchor system I got recommends using waterproof silicone on any holes that don't use a well nut. Any suggestions on a type/brand of sealant or do I even need any if I use nuts and bolts?

Great video, thank you so much for making it. Just a note, using your method for removing the stem on the rivets is based on the rivet type you sell at Austin Kayaks? Most marine tri-rivets I've used cannot remove the stem easily with a side to side method.

This is a great video, very helpful! I have a question: I purchased a zig zag cleat to install on my Hobie Pro Angler 14. Can I use well nuts to secure the cleat to my kayak? If so, do you know what size bolts and well nuts are best or needed?
Fly Oz
Fly Oz - 7 years ago
1/4" or 3/16' so 6mm or 4.5mm would hold a lot. Must use stainless bolts nuts and washers avail at Hardware car parts or boating shops.

Are there any solutions for patching holes drilled out for well nuts? I didn't like the placement on my anchor trolley and now I'm not sure how to go about it.

+Wallace Sweeney III If you're close to one of our shops, stop in and we'd be happy to help! If not, I suggest using something like thishttp://www.austinkayak.com/products/1587/KC-Welder-Pro-with-Hobie-Color-Rod-Stock.html to do the job. If you call our customer service team at 888-828-3828 they'd be happy to walk you through the process!

Well I don't have many accessories on the yak but it is a Splash II made by Crescent kayaks I believe it weighs 66lbs but maybe more like 70lbs with deck rigging, eyes, hooks, water and paddles. I plan on using four 3prong marine rivets to install the handle I just would hate for it to rip/rip out of a 70lb kayak after just a few uses. Also does the handle really make it easier to carry as you can already carry it awkwardly from where your legs would go. Doesn't seem that a handle would make it easier except for grip. I was considering installing a handle on both front and back it place of the paracord handles some SOT's come with. Thank for your time!!

It sounds to me like this would be fine. We use marine rivets to install handles all the time. If you want a stronger hold though you can use Well nuts. They do require a larger hole however. https://www.austinkayak.com/products/263/Stainless-Steel-Bolt-10.html

Up to what weight will those side mount carry handles work with?
Austin Kayak
Austin Kayak - 8 years ago
+andrew louderback Without knowing specifics of your setup, it's hard to say for sure, however  the webbing is really strong though so you shouldn't have any issues. It would depend on the structure of the kayak at the installation point or the hardware used to do the install. Overall, the webbing shouldn't fail, but if you have more concerns or want to go over details - I'm happy to do so! Just need a little more info from you :)

Hi, with regard to the rod holder installation, it would be helpful to mention the orientation of the rod holder, before being riveted. Good video!

if everything is above the water line there is no need to use any silicone

Good video. Lots of good info.  That said, the install of the Scotty flush mount left some room for error since  both the sharpie trace and the drill center were "eyeballed". Somebody who is not as skilled/practiced might drill the hole off center using this method.  I would suggest that the novice installer flip the mount upside down and mark the 4 screw holes with a pencil. Then draw a pair of lines diagonally from mark to mark. The center mark for the drill is where the lines intersect.

This is a great video!   I learned a lot more than I knew about the types of hardware to use when thinking about mounting anything on my kayak. I guess the only thing not mentioned, which may be assumed or left out on purpose, is the application of any silicone or water-proofing application to further seal those holes.  Great job!

You guys at ACK are the best.  I purchased several items from you guys and somehow the rivets were missing.  Not only you send the rivets right away but also included a free T-shirt.  Excellent customer services.
