The TRUTH of Paddle VS Pedal Kayaks for fishing ! Part 2

This video is about the argument between Paddle Vs Pedal Kayaks. There is a huge debate on which is better for fishing. I have been asked a lot lately on which is better for kayak fishing. It really depends on what your are trying to do in your kayak. I really like my pedal kayak but there are times I really like my paddle kayak too. Here are my answers. I don't know man. It's really each to their own. I have a Hobie Outback, just like you - had it a few years now. 6 months ago I bought a Jackson Cuda. The Outback is the boat the friends and visitors use now and nothing will get me out of the Cuda. I paid the premium for a Mirage drive based Kayak because I have arthritis and previous experience with a paddle kayak (Ocean Kayaks Prowler) just hurt too much over long distance. The Outback didn't give me that problem. But then I started to fish really skinny water and found the mirage drive to just simply be a massive, expensive, heavy, pain in the ass. Lots of people say "Flutter the drive", etc etc but the fact is if you're spending all day in water that regularly drops to just a few inches deep you that doesn't work too well. It's tiring, takes a lot of effort to work fluttering and doesnt move the boat too well. And, as you pointed out, the big fat mirage drive boats simply don't paddle well with a traditional paddle.

The Cuda on the other hand (or any decent sized dedicated fishing kayak with a deep V nose and skeg) tracks phenomenally, is generally faster than the Hobie (because it cuts through water like a hot knife in butter and you can keep up the paddle pace easily for a long amount of time), has more storage, doesn't have nasty lumps of metal sticking out from the middle of the deck, has more accessible storage (huge center hatch) and to my great surprise absolutely doesn't cause me pain to paddle. I'm selling the Hobie real soon and sticking to paddle kayaks with great hull designs, rather than fat boats with a neat pedal system.

Paddle or pedal. The absolute best one is the one that you like the best. Why the debate at all? It's all about personal preference.
Puddin Tane
Puddin Tane - 6 years ago
All about preference. I have a Slayer Propel 13 and love the idea of having my hands free! It costs more than regular paddle only yaks, but I wouldn’t trade if for the world! To each his own!

I love my hobie outback but certainly not all of the time. Sometime u just want to grab the lightest kayak and go. Or you don’t have all day to pedal. You need to make a list of criteria. 1. Can u afford it? 2 Where/what do you fish? Etc...I would not want to lift it out of the water at the end of the day. So do you have good method of transporting your boat? A lot of time I think pedal kayaks are just hacks. They want to be like a motor boat. You just make sure you have time and energy to be the motor.

Hi there my kayak fishing friend. Most of the things that you say in the vid is valid by my opinion, but it´s valid for your kind of fishing. I am fishing in the Swedish archipelago in vast stony and shallow areas. Propeller - or mirage systems would spoil many of the benefits compared of using a boat in my fishing areas. I just don´t want anything under my shallow going kayak... The pike is mostly my target fish and I so almost 90% of my fishing standing up. I even paddle standing up in my fishing area searching for fish before even trying to cast - sight fishing. When U perform fly fishing U don´t want anything to tangle U:r line (if U don´t use a line basket that is often in your way while fly fishing from a kayak). Than means that I strip my kayak from most things that can tangle my fly line. Sight fishing standing up is just impossible from a pedal drive. The pedals would always be in the way and be tangling my fly line. When using an intermediate line (or a sinking fly line), the line often tangles in things under the water line such as rudders etc. A propeller or mirage system would cause many and often dangerous situations as my line often will tangle on to such things. I fully understand though that propeller - or mirage propelled yaks have many advantages in other kind of fishing than I perform, such as open sea fishing. There you are right. If U are interested in vids from "my kind of yak fishing", then go to my Youtube channel pikestrikesweden. Cheers my friend!
pikestrikesweden

I must add that I have my own fishing camp and ten boats of different sizes used by me and my guests. So, if I need to "go fast" or fishing outside the sheltered islands on open sea, I preferable use a boat. The fishing there is not so interesting as in your waters though...What I would like to say is that I was searching for a platform in our shallow brackish areas that was much more effective than a boat. I found one eight years ago in a simple (paddle) kayak. From that I was convinced and I use my kayaks (Jackson Kayaks) usually instead of a boat. It´s not always about cost, A paddling kayak might be better than one with a propeller/mirage system just based on effectiveness. As I have stated in my first text, a paddling kayak is better for me and my fishing. There are not right or wrong. We just need different things due to our personal kind of fishing...

I wish there was a video comparing a heavy kayak vs a light weight kayak. The obvious would be how easy it is to just go when you have a light weight model. But in water ability would be interesting. Right off you know the light weight model has huge advantage with paddle. I hope someone makes one light a Old Town Predator vs this model.

I live in WA State on Puget Sound. I think our rocky beaches would eat up the pedal kayak's. I've watched video's of them and they seem cool but just don't seem all that practical. I think for the amount of money that something like an Outback costs, I would rather invest in a day sailer or small boat.

I have a Hobie outback pedal drive, a paddle board, and a "regular" sit on top yak. The Hobie is heavier by far, but can run the shallows as well...you just flutter the fins, or keep them flat and use the paddle. I do a lot of river fishing....being able to turn the nose up river and pedal allows me to hold stationary with a little pedaling while fishing a selected spot....that is hard to do with a paddle...get what you can afford and get on the water...

Leg muscles are bigger and burn out the body much faster. We did a charity paddle of 70 miles. 4 paddling and 1 peddling a Hobbie. He could only keep up peddling at our speed for an hour at a time and had to alternate 1-hour peddling, 1-hour paddling. A point to note is that he was younger and fitter than us as he trained like a demon for a year before the event. Our pace was dictated by the speed he could maintain. His paddling sections for such a big yak were painfully slow.

I have seen people showing how to make them on here. With pvc and floats on each side. Getting the angle just right would be the hard part. You would need to make one so you could adjust the floats higher or lower. Because when its rough they would drag in the waves when low.

With all due respect, I feel that most pedal kayak owners spend the majority of their time trying to convince the rest of us that they weren't stupid for spending 10X more for a boat that does essentially the same thing that ours does with a slightly greater level of convenience being the only real benefit. Seriously, I have an 11-foot angler kayak that I bought for $350 brand new and can catch the exact same fish as the guy in the $3,500 Hobie. So, forgive me if I'm not all that interested in paying an extra $3,150 so I don't have to move my arms. It's about like arguing the merits of a Ferrari over a Hyundai. And while I'm on my soapbox, I also catch just as many fish on my $80 rod/reel combo as those guys catch on their $400 St. Croix outfits. Just sayin'... fishing is fishing. To each their own.

For the price of a paddle kayak I'll buy a fucking tinny thanks, if you want to argue about holding position and better for casting from then a tinny shits all over your kayak and I don't break a sweat getting back to shore after a good day fishing. Ridiculously priced pieces of plastic

McScott76 what do you mean? Ive owned a paddle kayak for the last 4 years and regularly fish with a friend with a hobie outback. The ease in which he gets around the water. Holds position when casting lures at structure and comfort he has with the vantage seat i had to buy one. He would cover so much water whilst I would stuff round getting into position making casts and holding spots it is a waste of time in a paddle. Bait fishing would be fine but if you want to cast lures all day and not be fucked from hours of paddling dont be a tight ass and buy a peddle kayak.

I'm a pedal Kayak owner and I've never wasted a minute trying to convince anyone what I payed was worth it or not. I have spent more time explaining to curious individuals what the watercraft I am fishing in is and where they can buy one. I've let a few people try mine out to see what it is like and some have purchased pedal kayaks of their own as a result. My 1st 16' Hobie mirage drive kayak cost $1200.00
My 2nd Hobie mirage drive kayak cost $1200.00
All a person has to do is go fishing on a river with somewhat of a current to experience what a pain it is to have to paddle, sit the rod down, paddle, pick the rod back up over and over. With my Hobie the only time I touch the paddle is when I push off from shore, or come back into shore. It's wonderful in my opinion not having to touch the paddle or drop the rod for hours!

My 1st kayak was a paddle Kayak I used for about 1yr. That was about 7-8yrs ago and I haven't used it since.

So to each their own.

I agree ... I'm new to this kayaking thing here ... I bought a cheapo inflatable just to get the sense of paddling, which IMHO, isn't bad especially once you get the momentum going ... so now I'm figuring a good paddle kayak for $400-$800 range, I can then put what ever toys and gizmos on it and still be well under the cost of a descent pedal kayak with out all the bells and whistles ...

Jim Cornwall

Kerry Pitt I run a Native Propel 13 in Puget Sound, Tacoma Narrows area. I have not had any problems with handling tides. It's easier than paddling my other boat, an Elie Gulf 120XL. Leg muscles are way stronger than arm.

I like the stealth of a paddle yak. I can sneak up on Reds, Tarpon, and even get really close to wrecks/structure without spooking my fish. Most recreational Paddle Yaks are not that great for long distance unless you are in really good shape and have that kind of time to waste paddling versus fishing.
The Pedal Kayaks are faster and great for long distance travel, but perform poorly in extremely shallow environments and create a lot of noise which can spook fish on the flats. None of the Pedal Drives are quiet enough in my experience, but in this situation, I simple go to the Paddle after using the Pedal Drive to get where I need to be.
I recently rigged my Yak with a Trolling motor and this seems to be a great mix because I have stealth, plenty of range and even perform well in shallower water.

This is a great debate, however I think I found solution three.  I bought a Nucanoe Frontier 12, which I usually paddle.  Then I bought a Minn Kota Trolling motor for $95 and a Mighty Max batter for about $60.  I can get about four hours of continuous run at low speed with the Mighty Max/Minn-Kota combination.  By only using the motor from point to point and paddling around the fishing holes I can fish all day and still have battery power.  I still get lots of exercise and don't worry so much about getting caught up in a stiff wind.  Down side is having to register the Yak.  At about $10 a year it ain't bad.    FLCoyote
MrBamery
MrBamery - 7 years ago
In CA/CO where I kayak fish you have to register the boat as soon as it is no longer self propelled (or even sail driven - hobie island adventure, etc).  This eliminates a large amount of fishing locations (at least in CO) when you have a powered boat.  Just food for thought.   Registration is cheap though - $35/year in CO, and then you are also subject to inspections before launching your boat when it is registered.

I go down to the Texas Gulf Coast as often as possible, but most of my fishing happens on rivers in Central TX. A pedal-drive kayak wouldn't make it a mile down the Colorado or Pedernales before the fins hit a shoal. I can take my OC Trident 11 or my Tarpon 110 into any kind of water, but a pedal drive needs some depth. They work great in lakes or BTB, but not so well on the flats or rivers. For the money, I'll keep paddling.

I own both so I am ready for whatever type of fishing event I'm going. I like how padaloha Kayleigh is lighter and I can launch almost anywhere and my pedal needs specific launch points.

If you want to save money they go for a used Hobie. You can find older mirage drive kayaks for just over $1-1.5K pretty often depending on the area that you are in. There is one in Denver right now that is a 09 for 1300. Granted they won't have the newest features, but they will have a very reliable almost bulletproof gen 1 or even turbo fin system. If you are looking at brand new then I would suggest an outback or a native slayer propel. Both in the 2400 range and have much more proven drive systems. Perception has their Pilot 12 for 1900 but it has been out since February and already had 2 recalls.

I did a lot of reading and YT reviews on paddle vs drive and had a chance to score a drive yak. I traded my buddy a nicely built AR15 for his 2009 hobie outback and I love this thing. The weight is a challenge but if you want a yak then you already know it's gonna be work to get it on the water. I've on taken it out on the flats here in ft Walton, fl and it's plenty enough to get around and hit those less touched spots.
