The best ride Hobie Mirage adventure island sailing kayak on a windy day in Long Beach NY

I show how to start out from dock with a single seat always peddling into the wind which is southerly. Heading out to the channel on a windy day on Reynolds channel in Long Beach, NY. You better be fit to run this buggy. When going against a strong wind is just like going on a steep incline on a bicycle. But once you catch the wind its like a water ride. Video recorded with GoPro Hero2. If you just want to kayak, remove the outriggers and sail. Coordinate the pedals with the oar and you can fly. I can't see putting anything attached to deflect the waves from splashing, that's the fun part.

Can you list your full setup. I really like your peddle Kayak with the pontoon's. Which kayak are you using and are the pontoon's an accessory? Did you use a hobie sailing kit? Thanks in advance!

What you see is the Hobie mirage adventure island kayak. I bought nothing extra. Mine is about 7 years old. They have improved of the seat which was the only problem.

Robert Khoury

2 different animals. With the Hobie you get wet, peddle when needed, alone unless you get the tandem, or join a group, It's fun and a workout, no gas, you can fish with it. You can relax with a boat and fish and bring a friend, pay for gas and hose it down, paint it, a lot more work.

If your outrigger floats are that wide, it is giving a hard pressed rig false clues. You really shouldn't need that wide. The problem with this rig is that it is not giving sufficient feedback about being over-pressed. A conventional boat will heal progressively and that gives you clues about reefing. This rig is fundamentally flawed in that it doesn't give feedback until you catastrophically capsize. The rig is also far too complicated and expensive. There are too many parts that could fail. I am surprised that Hobie cannot think of a more elegant, simpler solution that is also safer.

It's very fun! The Tandem Island is the best. Good for fishing also. It's not a Weta, not supposed to compete.

Interesting comment i suppose, although it's mainly gibberish to me, a novice who thinks this rig looks like great fun!
Robert Khoury
Robert Khoury - 6 years ago
Interesting comment. It is easy to be critical. I'm aware that this unit is at the low end of its group. I would never tip over. Release the sail and roll it in. It only has one sail but I have fun for the price I paid. I use other kayaks on a calm day. I also enjoy getting wet. Your comment will help many in decision making.

Did you have a gps? if so, what was your top speed. I am debating whether to buy a Hobie or a Windridder 16.
Robert Khoury
Robert Khoury - 7 years ago
No gps, lower in the water than the 16. I wouldn't use the nose attachment to avoid the splash. That's what I love, getting wet

+attiume yami how do you fit akas and amas in your sonata. Don't the amas have to go on top?
attiume yami
attiume yami - 7 years ago
I put my adventure island on top of my car. I own a hyundai sonata and it does just fine. Make sure u do get some good roof racks though the yak will bend low quality ones. Its a pain in the a$$ to load and unload but if u have a hobie cart with inflated weels it should b no problem. U dont need a trailer unless u have the tandem AI. Take the akas and amas apart and put them inside the veichle to lessen the weight

+Robert Khoury how fast can you go with a full loaded model, and who makes this setup?
Robert Khoury
Robert Khoury - 8 years ago
Exactly, unless the wind is just right I come about without peddles
Larry Troxler
Larry Troxler - 8 years ago
Well regardless, I wish I could find one to try or buy. New is over my budget though, especially the tandem plus add ons. So I guess the idea with tacking is that you use the pedals just for a bit just to help it through the tack?
Robert Khoury
Robert Khoury - 8 years ago
I have tacked numerous times, sometimes with no peddling . I will look into adding a spinnaker for more speed.
Larry Troxler
Larry Troxler - 8 years ago
+Robert Khoury I would think it would be the opposite in that if you manage to tack without cheating with the pedals, then it's certainly less work. can you actually tack it. I know that cats are fussy that way. lots of people backwind the jib to come about.
Robert Khoury
Robert Khoury - 8 years ago
If the wind is not in your favor in one direction you get a work out tacking. If I would have done a quick turn no tacking is needed
Larry Troxler
Larry Troxler - 8 years ago
How easy is to tack? I noticed that you pumped the pedals just once or twice while turning through the wind. Is that just to give it a slight nudge past the in irons point?
Larry Troxler

could run you up to almost 1k once you add spinnaker, tramps, and dolly. if buying new. and if spending the 2k extra for the tandem, which is actually only 2 feet longer

Never, and never will.  I site on the hull to keep level and I would release the sail to slow then pull it in.

I have watched this a couple of times.  It seems that you are having a lot of fun. I want to try out my friend's smaller Hobie kayak.  It is a Mirage and has the sail, but she does not know how to use it.  I am wondering if I should get the pontoons first.  The lake is warm though.  I used to sail out of Alamitos Bay, California, too.  Now I live in the desert.  I miss sailing a whole lot.
Rocque Bowen

We just got the pontoons today and the furler part for her Hobie kayak, today.  I get to be the one to test pilot it.  Maybe on Monday when the lake is more empty.

Rocque Bowen
Rocque Bowen - 10 years ago
+Robert Khoury Where I sail won't have the length to sail before having to turn around, but I am going to check it out.  I will check the rigging to see if I can test it without the pontoons.  The wind switches here a lot.

this is a fantastic video.  a strong wind with no waves.  I too have to pedal around when I come about into the wind.  Sometimes I can get up speed and come about without using the mirage drive.  In Sarasota Bay it is so shallow that I often leave the mirage drive at home and just use the paddle to go into the wind.

Thanks for commenting. I have gone out on low tide and had to get out and push. No matter, all is fun even the time I went off shore from inlet to inlet with no turning back. Got bounced around a bit. Will do it again this summer.

I travel the bays on Long Island NY, never gone too far. I travel east to west or west to east. I need either a strong northern or southern wind. At times I will head out from my canal and if the wind is wrong I'll have to zig zag and that is no fun even with peddling. then I head home and jump into a regular kayak.
