The pulsejet powered kayak (part 2)

Here's footage from the show where we ran the pulsejet-powered kayak down a runway and then raced it against an Olympic rower. Remember -- this *is* television, not real life (if you get my drift). Still, it was great fun and I quite enjoy doing pulsejet stuff like this for TV programs.

To the untrained eye, it may seem that a pulsejet is a very loud, gas guzzling machine that is only slightly better than no engine at all.

Hi, wonder if the outer surface can be cooled with water to create a steam jet to add thrust. Maybe an auxiliary engine to power a boat when the main engine fails at the middle of the sea.

Fuel combusts in the large chamber, expands and runs out of oxygen to continue combustion, the gas then contracts sucking air in through the shorter pipe. AKA the fuel pulses combust/contract

I'm more impressed by the K1 kayaker. Frankly, the fact that he was so close doesn't say that much for the power or efficiency of the pulsejet. And that type of olympic kayak isn't made for turning either. Those races are on the straight. And the kayaker didn't have a motor. The kid reminds me of a kid many years ago who tried to beat me on my bicycle with a moped scooter, but he didn't even win on the straights.

Looked like a fun project. Bet the USCG would never approve that one! Well, unless ya got a big corporation to get the rulebook tweeked, aka, the Jet Ski, in the '70's.

Wonder how it would do against Mokai, Surfango, or our own Lean 'N' Steer powered kayak? In our case, we could run the race on just a few ounces of fuel. Something tells me it would take well over 20 pounds of fuel to go five miles with this pulsejet.

The engine sound reminds me of a German V1 engine, which it is!

Cute experiment.

Pushing against isn't what creates the power. Least not the way you are thinking. Anything more in the water just creates drag. Would be a lot quieter though. :)

i believe this is the wrong way of using a pulse jet. a pulse jet is not as inefficient as many people believe. We just use it the wrong way. In this video, i believe that the kayak was powered by a 55 lb thrust lockwood. at the speed that the engine was used, it is probably equivalent to a 14 horspower engine. this is not good. a 55 lb thrust lockwood can deliver 58.6 horsepower (not 14) if it used at 400 mph and 95.2 horsepower if the engine is used at 650 mph. My point is to operate the kayak at a low speed, but the pulse jet engine itself needs to be operated at very high speed (from 400 to 650 mph). one way to do this is using a rotary pulse jet engine. this is an actual pulse jet that rotates. Examples are available on youtube. see this link PART 2 rotary pulse jet . a pulse jet engine can even be used to power its own compressor. when fitted with a compressor, a turbo jet cannot beat a pulse jet. I understand that it has never been done before. i also undertand that a gear box will create friction, which will cause some power to be wasted when using a rotary pulse jet. But remember at high speed, a pulse jet will become 4 to 7 times more powerful without even using a compressor. If we add a compressor, a pulse jet will probably beat a turbojet.

cept a pulse jet ignites its fuel using the already hot engine from what i understand, so you would cool it off then it would just stop running. I might be wrong though, not an expert

Perhaps he is saying that he can go faster with a traditional gas motor, which would also use significantly less fuel, because the natural alternative to a crappy motor is a good motor, not no motor

BosonCollider
BosonCollider - 10 years ago
Valveless pulsejets have a cycle of explosion -> blast wave exits the tube -> underpressure -> air gets sucked in. The underpressure phase will suck in more than enough air to properly burn the fuel, so there's no benefit in aiming the intake any other way than backwards so that the part of the blast wave that exits through the intake also contributes to thrust.

At high speeds, aiming the intake forward can also be detrimental to performance in the sense that the ram pressure can disrupt the combustion cycle.
SuperNerdDace
SuperNerdDace - 10 years ago
In a pulse jet thrust you get outward airflow from both the intake and the exhaust so by having a rear facing intake they actually get more thrust. There does come a point when the engine is moving too quickly to effectively pull in air through the intake when it is rear facing but here it does not move fast enough for it to make sense to have a forward facing intake.
Patachu
Patachu - 10 years ago
+xjet yeah a valveless pulse jet. doesn't change the fact the design lacks of common sense and efficiency. instead of adding a valve or some turbine somewhere to orient the airflow. ..idk, never played with such a thing so far.

and it would cool the pulsejet engine and increase its trust.... But in reality, all sorts of gas turbine(i.e.jet) engines are not very efficient. For aircrafts there is no better alternative. But for land based vehicles, jet engines are unnecessary. Although they give a better torque in lower speeds, their fuel efficiency is significantly lower than gas piston engines. Diesel engines, especially the new modern designs are pretty much adequate for land vehicles.

I remember seeing this on TV a few weeks ago. The first pulsejet you tried looked very cool, but sadly it failed. Could you make one work that looks like that fist one you tried on the kayak, and put it on a plane? And is it more powerful/does it deliver more power than your normal everyday single tube pulsejet, like the second one you tried on the kayak that worked? Thanx
