Speed I’d say 6-10 compared to most fishing kayaks. Durability and longevity I’d say 9-10. Feelfree’s are built for the long hall. They are the stoutest yaks we sell.

Why nobody talks about quality? Like is it gonna last? Is it gonna leak? Can it handle abuse? What about positive floatation?

Scott Adams longer is always going to paddle nicer. Less effort to move across the water and it will cut through waves and chop better. Moken 12.5 and Seaghost Paddle very comparable.

I picked up my Big Fish 120 a week ago and have been out once.  This is my first kayak, I'm 64, 6'1", 250lbs.    I was concerned, due to its weight and size (and mine), that it might be a bear to paddle.  I took it out on a local reservoir/river in a light wind (10-15mph) and chop.  On the contrary, it was a dream to paddle even with the seat in the high position.  It tracked very well regardless of the direction of the wind, was extremely stable and maneuvered well.  I seriously could have gone all day.  I got a Werner Shuna paddle and I can support everything you've said in your other videos about spending money on a quality paddle.   I know this can be a real expense for many people but I'm a firm believer that you don't want to practice false-economy when making a long-term purchase like this.  Do you research, save for what you want, try not to cut corners, and it will reward you by making the experience even better than you imagined.

Hey guys and gals.
Love fishing and looking at a kayak to get out on the water.
I'm a big man. 6'3" 300lbs.
Never been in a kayak ever but I want to expand my fishing options.
Definitely want one with peddles and an ore. Any advice would be appreciated. Just don't want to be taken advantage of when I do go get one.

I got the Big Fish120 and I love it. It is so stable and has tons of room. But it really needs a rudder to help with the tracking. Other than that its was the best money I've spent.

I've been fishing out of my Yellowfin 100 for a year now and love it. I mostly fish big ponds and calm flatwater lakes. The stability is great even at 6' 1" and 200 lbs but it takes some practice to stand and fish. Like you said, it's a great grab and go yak. I can pull up and have it in the water and launched in minutes and the same for docking and loading. I highly recommend it for anyone as a starter yak and anyone only fishing small water not wanting to break the bank on something they don't really need. I do recommend installing an anchor trolley and anchor. There is plenty of room in the hull to put a battery for a fishfinder and any other electronics too. Another recommendation is to spend a little money and upgrade the paddle. The one that comes with it is great as a back-up but the plastic blades and aluminum shaft gets a little tiresome to paddle after a few hours or if the water gets rough in bigger lakes. I found an Aquabound Sting Ray Carbon Posi-Lok for $150 on a local site and I love it and can tell a big difference. In fact, enough of a difference that if I bought a bigger kayak I'd probably research getting an even better paddle. It really makes it a lot more enjoyable if you're going to be out for several hours. I hope my personal review might help reninforce your great review for anyone starting out. One last note. You need to think about how much you're going to use it and where and maybe think about waiting a little longer and saving up and just spending the money right off the bat to get a bigger, more stable, and possibly a peddle kayak. I will definitely keep my Vibe Yellowfin 100 because it fits a personal need for grab and go but I'm honestly already wanting a Hobie Pro Angler or Native so I can cover bigger water, faster.

Ok I'm new to kayaking looking for one to do both lakes for bass and some bay/ flats fishing for snook, reds and trout. Would the vibe yellowfin work or the sg110 be a better option. I'm only 5'7 and 185lbs so I know I'll be no where near the weight limits on either yak.

Greg Davis both would work. The Seaghost is just a big step up on features. You’ll like the rudder for steering and staying in position.

My own opinion. Molded in front and back handles are nice. However, when you have to portage on a river, they are not user friendly. Your hand needs something a bit smaller in diameter to hold that thing for a longer trek. I wish they'd make them smaller in diameter. It is really hard to hold on to that molded in handle for a hundred yards.

If you are stupid like me, and take your fishing kayak down a rather rapid river, fishing kayaks are not really suited for that. But what I learned is that when trekking down a river, those little bungees do not hold gear down when you flip your kayak. Big bungees don't either. Do not trust them. You need positive, hard fastened straps to hold your gear in place, like the Feel Free provides in back of the seat. You won't lose stuff in the hull, again like Feel Free and others provide. Hull storage is important, I think. The new Big Fish doesn't have hull storage so you better add pad eyes for positive tie-down of your deck stuff. Everything should be tied down solidly.

I have the Feel Free 10 and love it. Only complaints are too large of diameter on the molded in handles, and no hole for at least a skeg. I really don't want a rudder, but skeg would be good. Also, the console needs to be a tighter seal. It is so loose and not water tight. I put a couple of pad eyes in and added a couple of mini bungees to hold that lid down tight. Not water tight, but it won't come open when I flip.

So I'm indecisive between the vibe seaghost 130 and the big fish 120 I'm 260 pounds 6'2. I mainly fish saltwater flats and tidal waters with some wake depending on the spot. I like both kayaks but don't have anywhere I can actually see them in person what would you recommend Headwaters Kayak

Headwaters Kayak mainly following baitfish and looking for stripers boiling or surfacing. My current kayak is too narrow and doesn't track well. I don't stand up too often but would if it's calmer out. I also troll when there isn't much action.

That Big Fish 105 looks pretty effing sweet! what do you think of the Ascend 10T and 12T from bass pro?
Munky332
Munky332 - 6 years ago
I totally agree, though I'm just looking into kayak fishing, the 500-650 "bracket" would be my sweet spot, if I consider spending 100-150 on a paddle, plus another 100-150 on PFD, plus other accessories. If I could get a Big Fish 105 or something equivalent, new, maybe with a few less "features" for that price, I'd probably get one immediately. The closer the boat gets to 1000$, the closer I'd be to getting into a Jon boat or basstender type "bass dinghy" which might suit my needs/wants a bit better.
Headwaters Kayak

While I appreciate your video, one thing I would ALWAYS like to see or to know is the hull configuration of any boat that you review. It seems that tri-hulls are more stable when standing so for me, this would be an important feature to know about

Do you offer a kayak that can be use to scuba dive from???
Monty Craig
Monty Craig - 6 years ago
Considering your top ten are all yaks that can be bought at your store, it is easy to see why you would choose these specific kayaks. Unfortunately, you missed out on other boats that are better bang for the buck. Too bad this is so slanted, otherwise, I am sure we would see a Pelican Catch 120, and the NXT...
Monty Craig
Monty Craig - 6 years ago
Good info Dan! After researching more, I have rethought my choice of a Pelican Catch 120, and I am now looking at a 3 Waters Big Fish 120. I like the rudder system on these boats, and even though Pelican is coming out with the Catch 130, there is no reverse on it. So, I see no real value in it for fishing skinny water, lakes, and ponds. Thanks for the good information.
Monty Craig
Monty Craig - 6 years ago
Chris Blair , significantly better how? Since I'm new to kayaking, I'm really open to listening with an unbiased opinion. .
Chris Blair
Chris Blair - 6 years ago
And then there's the fact that you can get a significantly better kayak in any of the above (or many more). Pelican is a bottom-end kayak company much like sun dolphin. They are 2-piece thin plastics that don't hold up. For $150 - $200 they are great intros to the sport, but nothing more than that. The $600 Pelican's such as those you mentioned are for people who are new to kayaking and don't know any better. People watching videos considering kayaks in the $1000 line don't even consider Pelican.
Monty Craig
Monty Craig - 6 years ago
Headwaters Kayak the NXT is the second generation of the Catch 120. There are some good videos out on it. You could check out Marty Zoffinger's channel. BTW, I'm new to your channel, didn't realize you were in Cal. I thought FL. Hope I didn't come across as rude, not meant in that spirit.
Headwaters Kayak
Headwaters Kayak - 6 years ago
Monty Craig what’s an NXT? Always looking for good options. The Pelicans are to expensive to ship to Cali unless you buy massive bulk, and I just don’t see the value, with that said I’ve never paddled them.

This spring I got the Vibe Sea Ghost 130. That kayak is incredible. This is only my second season kayak fishing and the SG 130 is so very stable, roomy and FAST! Last year I used my Sundolphin Journey 10 SS which is not stable at all.I thought I would tip just turning to reach back and grab my rod. The SG is definitely a boat I will use for a very long time!!!

I currently have the perception pescador pro 100. I really like the boat and have taken it out 5 times on creeks and rivers. Everything is great except that I can’t fit my poles underneath the boat and there is only one 6 inch hatch to the dry storage. I was told by the place that I purchased the kayak from that I could return it for a full refund. They have the big fish 105 that I was also looking at. I noticed that there wasn’t storage under the boat but they also had built in rod holders and standing room while only being 50$ more. I just wanted to know if you thought it would be worth it to get the big fish and your opinion on how the kayaks stack up to one another

FloridaRaider Vibe is defiantly faster and better tracking. The big fish is more stable and nicer to fish from once you’re there. If you like to stand up and fish and don’t have a long way to paddle go big fish. If your having to cover miles to get to your spot go Vibe.

Thanks for taking the time to review these yaks. I have watched it dozens of times to decide what I do and don’t want in my next purchase. You have the Native Manta Ray 12 XT rated at 235lb weight limit capacity. Is this a typo (325...?). Seems low, maybe a yak for smaller people?

How well does the lure feel free 10 track, without a rutter
Headwaters Kayak
Headwaters Kayak - 6 years ago
Nathan Fleming on a scale of 1-10 One being white water boat where you spin in circles, 10 being a sea kayak that just glides strait. I’d say 4-5 it spins easy because of its length and width. It takes a steady even stroke to go strait. Wind also plays into tracking. If you paddle in wind a rudder is a life saver.

WanderingFromKansas
WanderingFromKansas - 6 years ago
I'm about 6'2, and 240 lbs. I want to fish slow-moving rivers, smaller lakes, and creeks. I'm a lightweight backpacker, so I'd like to take about 20-25 pounds of gear at about 50 liters in volume. I've been narrowed in on the Sea Ghost 110. The Big Fish 105 is intriguing, but I'm concerned about the weight of it to sling up on a mid-size SUV, and wondering if it doesn't paddle like a barge. Thank you for your feedback.
J Stein
J Stein - 6 years ago
I’d recommend the sg110. Car topping a 90lb boat is no fun. I used to paddle an Old Town Predator - quite the beast.

Have you considered the 130? I have one and use it on all different types of water, even some river action. It’s surprisingly fast for the size and likely a better experience for the $70 cost difference.

The Big Fish 105 will be more stable, but definitely slower.
Headwaters Kayak
Headwaters Kayak - 6 years ago
WanderingFromKansas both great options. I’m stoked on the Big Fish. It would be high of my list. SeaGhost 110 would work perfect too. The Bigfish 105 will handle the load better no doubt

But for me the bigfish takes with with rudder ready and the thru hull sonar pod.
I like the gravity seat better but the big fish being able to convert to a fold back leaning post is great also.
Maybe at some point this year ill be able to get a couple for me and my son.
For now its sticking with out diy kayaks.

Really great over view of these yaks. Thanks!
Dalton Sim Racing
Dalton Sim Racing - 6 years ago
I was also torn between the Lure 10 and the Big Fish 105, but at 89 lbs, the 105 is awfully heavy for a boat that size. Heck, the 120 is 100 lbs! Just my opinion, but 30 lbs of additional dead weight is pretty significant when compared to the 69 lbs of the Lure 10.

The foot pedal controlled rudder on the seaghost is really nice. I especially appreciate having that controll in the wind. A plus for it coming preinstalled and under 1k still. The center console storage is pretty convenient for measuring fish too, but it does annoy me when i have to unclip the seat to get a nice comfortable standing position to move around. Also comes ready to fish with a paddel. Could go on forever, overall really nice kayak for the buck. The big fish is looking tasty though. Fist time hearing about it in this vid.

Jason S
Jason S - 6 years ago
Ive got one of the yellowfins you mentioned in the video. Its a great little boat for the money and it doesnt weigh much so car toping it is very easy. Plus you really do get some nice features on it as well. Ive also added one of the poor mans power poles as I call them to the back of it. Along with building my own all in one battery box with the fishfinder and transducer arm all mounted to it. It all fits right between the front foot rest. So I just put it on when in use and pack it up when Im done. One thing I will admit about the vibe kayaks though is I dont think the plastic of the hull is as thick as higher end brands. It seems like the deck has a lot of flex in it. I had one of the Jackson cudas before and it just seemed like a much tougher kayak.
Jason S
Jason S - 6 years ago
Headwaters Kayak Yeah im not to worried about it myself as most of my fishing is done on lakes where im launching in sand. And I love the lighter weight since I do car top..
Headwaters Kayak
Headwaters Kayak - 6 years ago
Jason S I agree. Compared to the Feelfree, Native, Nucanoe the plastic on the Vibe is thinner, but they also weigh a lot less. Same material just less of it. Bonafide took the same approach with their new yaks. They have more flex, but they are way lighter when car-topping. I’ve had very few Vibe Warranties, but when I have they have replaced every one no questions asked.
