Why not to buy Walmart kayaks !!!

If you are a bigger boy , this is what it's like trying to use a cheap kayak. He upgraded to a feelfree lure that same day ! It was 49 degrees too .. 😂

It's ok to buy Walmart kayaks just get the right size. It's a cheap way to get people off their asses and outside on the water.

Just like a fat fuck redneck to buy a boat that is rated for 250 lbs. when he weighs 300 lbs. and to post a video blaming the retailer because he didn't do his research.

For someone under 200# it would be fine. Most Kayaks are 30 inches wide. He would need a bigger wider one.
Cody Klug
Cody Klug - 7 years ago
its not all about size. its the type mixed with the size. white water ones aren't more than 8 feet at most and trick ones are even shorter yet. for the basic type though yes this is small.

I haven't ever owned one but personally I don't like the idea of an open top kayak

also, those other 2 kayaks are amazing. at least for fishing and maybe larger waves in the lake since theyre 12.

I would like 3 different kayaks. a 14 for open lake with large waves. my 10 that I have for a mix of open water up until nice rapids. and an 8 foot white water one for the rough stuff.

What is wrong with people?? How can this video possibly get so many crappy comments?! I thought it was a hilarious video and the camera person's laugh made me laugh even more. And the point of the video was obvious even if I had no title. It is amazing how vicious people can be with zero provoking. I watched this video and I laughed and I had not been up very long this morning, and it was nice to get a laugh this early in the morning to start my day. And then I started seeing the comments and it just aggravated me that there are so many ignorant vicious jerks out there that would make the comments they made to such a lighthearted and funny video.

That's easy. Don't buy anything from walmart. You're starving the U.S when you shop at walmart. Walmart the largest employer in the U.S paying an average of 9 dollars compared to the 50s when it's was Ford at a pay equivalent to 50 dollars. Walmart subsides their profits with tax payer dollars. You think there products are cheap but your taxs are going to their employee's medicaid and food stamps even thought the employee works 40+ hours a week.

This kayak has horrible tracking and stability. Went to my brothers to do some fishing. Wanted to take my kayak (I have a lifetime tamarack angler kayak) but my brother said to just use his brother inlaw's kayak which is the same kayak in this clip. Im 5'10" and 160 lbs and had a hard time fishing in that kayak. Most of the time you are either shifting left or right to keep from flipping over or you're paddling one time on the left side and 4 times on the right just to go straight.

Do yourself a favor and dont get this kayak.
Jesse Werle

rikjohnson39

A- you are far too big for that small boat.
B- you need a seat-back and sit straight upright.
3- You need to take some basic kayaking lessons.

The kayak may be cheap but you need to learn what you are doing before you get on the water.

If you want to kayak fish dont buy one of these boats. You need at least 14 ft boat and that is if you are a SMALL person. A boat that is 15 or 16 ft is better. Reason one is simple the gear needed takes up space and you run out of it fast, 2nd is longer boats track better. Sit up straight in the boat and stay centered your HEAD is heavy and if you lean out with your head you will go over it's not rocket science but try it with out all the gear and see what happens. Lean out and see how the boat reacts you will also need some self recovery skills and equip too.

I have the same kayak, took it out my very first time kayaking yesterday, and had no problems whatsoever with it. I am 6'1" and weigh 220 and it carried me and a cooler full of beer around fine - and I was in seawater. Didn't tip once. A couple things:

1.) It says plainly on both the sticker on the kayak and the booklet that comes with it that the max capacity is 250 lbs. So if the guy in the video weighs more than that the fault is his, not the kayak's. He should learn to read.

2.) If you wobble around like a spaz in any canoe or kayak, you are going to tip it over. The guy in the video looks like he is having a seizure trying to fight the motion of the kayak. He needs to relax and go with the flow. Once you get used to the way it moves it's no problem.

To be honest if your not expecting to go 10mph you can use this kayak as a bigger person. I am 6' and 275lb and I do use it. It's not as stable as i would like and i had to plug the scuppers to not sit in like 3" of water but i've used it all winter to fish for crappie and set bush hooks for cats. Not saying it's for everyone but it is possible.

I have been paddling kayaks and canoes for twenty years. Where did you ever get the idea that small of a boat would hold a person your size? The problem with these Walmart kayaks is that they don't track very straight. My boats are all "brand name" yaks, ranging from a recreational 12 foot 4 inch boat to two 16 foot boats, but a buddy has a Walmart kayak that he enjoys poking around streams in. For a middle schooler or small woman, that is a nice kayak--not built for performance or with top features--but a "not bad for what you paid" boat.
Paul TheSkeptic
Paul TheSkeptic - 7 years ago
Yeah, you need to check the weight restrictions if you're a big guy. I'm also a big guy and I kayak. I use something a little larger. That little thing is great for kids or for smaller women. If he really wants to stick with that though, if you really just can't afford something bigger, just set it up with some kind of outrigger system. Just some poles and some styrofoam or something. Maybe you could set something up using two liter bottles or something. Use your imagination.

Someone bought me this kayak and its terrible no matter what your weight is. I'm 5'11" 180 pounds. Nobody wants to use it anymore because it doesn't track, spins when stopped, and is very squirrelly. The paddles flex like crazy too. I have another 10' kayak that has none of these problems.
ExposedRoot

Even for a kid the stability was aweful. That and the fact that thgis paddler is clueless. I paddle a $1000 sit on top yak and can stand up in it. Makes more sense to buy a higher end yak used.

I have never laughed so hard in my life!  Chad is a good sport & sounds like all of you are great friends.  I appreciate the video, we have a 6'7" 190 lbs. teenager boy who we are searching for a Kayak for him this Christmas.  He is familiar with Kayaks somewhat, but has grown quite a bit since last used one.  We considered the one in your video but the 12' model.  Not looking to spend over $700, but not sure if that is possible to get a fishing/angler kayak to accommodate his size.  He is well proportioned & in great physical shape.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have the exact kayak in a 12 footer. I've taken it across the lake loaded down on both
ends with camping gear for over a mile on more than one occasion. Have also taken it
down rivers a couple of times. I'm 5'6 and about 200 lbs, which is way fatter than I need to be.
I know these are not top of the line boats but they will work. My 12 footer is rated for 395 pounds
and hasn't let me down yet.

there's a reason I avoided those kayaks the shape of their hull does not look very stable you would want a multi dihedral Hall or a multi-channel hull. round hulls are garbage especially for his weight. he will make that yam more unstable and top heavy and will require more effort to balance.

I died laughing at this video. I just bought the exact same kayak and I almost took it back after seeing this. I'm not near that big... I'm nearly 70 years old and I didn't want to get some big heavy boat. It slides right in the back of my compact hatch back car and only weighs 44lbs! I haven't taken it out yet and I intend only to go out when it is super calm early in the morning and set a few crab traps and stick very close to shore. The lagoon near me is only 3-4 ft. deep average. I think it will be just FINE!! BOO on the negative comments...and NO you guys are not dumb.... I think it's cool you took a chance at least instead of being some nerd who reads all the directions and reviews. I say GO FOR IT. I'm attaching two big water noodles on either side of the boat before I take it out, to help with the stability. I grew up paddling a canoe...I think I'll be alright. If you don't hear from me for a long time....well....... Thanks for your video!!!! Looked like a fun time.

I have had my Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS for about 6 mos and used it many times on both lakes and rivers. I am not quite as Chubbly as the fella in the video, 5'8" and 180 lbs. For me this kayak works fine, not tippy once you get use to a sit on top Kayak. Water tight, have not had any water issues, inside the hull or the small water tight compartment. Did seal all holes into the Kayak and used well nuts for anything I attached. Only issue is the tracking, but it is only 10' long and 45 lbs. Handles better in a current than in a calm lake. Caught a few fish from it and it feels stable and solid. If I was Chubbly like the guy in the video, I would stick to either a pontoon boat or a Boston Whaler!

being an idiot can't be blamed on the yak... The way I see it, this video documents the reason one should do research and maybe learn a bit about small boats before rushing out to buy one and throw it in the water. Before you as what I know about boats.. I've sailed well over 50,000 miles on a 27 foot sailboat that I outfitted for the trip myself. I've crossed the pacific ocean twice on that sailboat. I've kayaked in the surf at santa cruz and half moon bay (home of the maverick surf contest) in California. I know a lot about boats and boat safety. All I can suggest is get a kayak suited to your size and learn in a body of water that is calm and well known. I do wish you the best...
EasiPat
EasiPat - 8 years ago
Journey 10 SS, the kayak in this video weighs 44 lbs, and has max capacity of 250 lbs. Therefore, if a person (and cargo) weighs more than about 200 lbs, the kayak will become unstable (because the effective center of gravity will be higher than designed). The gentleman in this video obviously weighs a lot more than that :)

The problem is that the guy is to big for this particular kayak. What is happening here is that the boat loose part of it's stability due to the weight inpose on it. He need to buy a biger and longer kayak and must check before buying it, the total gross weight the kayak can handle. That kayak is using wil work fine with the correct person (a smoller one). Also if fallowing the weight limitations of the boat. This cheap kayak is desingned for lakes and rivers with calm waters. On that they are in the right place, But the only error here is that they are overloading the kayak over it's limitation and this is the reason why the boat loose part of its stability. It will become completely unstable.

The plain and simple fact is the american public has become obsessed with the lowest price mentality. Combine that with the fact nobody can tell them a damn thing, this is what you get. Don't blame walmart. Bass pro, Academy sports, cabella's and everyone else sells a cheap kayak. That doesn't mean that you won't pay way too much at an outrigging place. Before anyone spends their money tbey should find people they trust to get information. Remember this. Cheap is never good and good is never cheap. To paraphrase the great al bundy, i have enough problems of my own. If someone is stupider than me, screw them.
Oozywolf
Oozywolf - 8 years ago
But you do have to realize that people also don't want to spend $500+ on a kayak they might only use twice and find that they don't like it. Of course there are tours and rentals, but some may not be able to do that or something. Long story short, I have seen videos of people enjoying cheap kayaks all over. Of course they have issues compared to a 12' Perception. But they're also half as much. Long story short, these cheap kayaks (when bought for the right sized person) float and get the job done. Of course there are better kayaks, but for someone that just wants to float on the water then there's not much wrong with them.

This guy is way too big for that boat and he hasn't a clue about how to paddle a kayak. I'm not saying Sun Dolphin kayaks are wonderful, they aren't, but does he really think that a 10 foot sit-on-top kayak from a different brand would work significantly better for him just because it cost more money? A good rule of thumb when watching YouTube videos, and for life in general, don't take advice from people who know nothing about the subject.

That Sundolphin model is one of the worst designed boats on the water. It really isn't even a kayak, just a boat shaped hunk of plastic. Has little to do with the paddler's size (though the guy in the video is clearly not only too heavy and tall for it but has no idea how to sit in a kayak -- it's not a Lazy-Boy, dude, sit up straight!) A friend of mine bought this same little plastic bathtub for his 11 year old 85 lb grandson and it is unstable for him as well, capsizes all the time. The best choice for a starter kayak is to buy a decent used on on Craigslist. For the $250 or so this guy wasted on this piece of junk at Wally World he could have bought a used Old Town Loon or Otter or one of the older Pelican, Jackson or Dagger models, probably with a PFD and paddle thrown in. And honestly, a canoe would be a better fishing choice for a guy that size. Mad River Adventure 14 plastic canoes are very similar to sit on top kayaks (low gunwales), can be paddled solo or tandem with kayak paddles. have a huge weight capacity and are common on Craigslist for $300 to $400. I got one of the 16' models a few years ago, used but in perfect shape, including an electric trolling motor and paddles, for $400. Super fun boat on flatwater or mild rapids.

It has got nothing to do with being cheap, it all has to do with stability and the person in the above video is too big and his Centre of Gravity is way too high. He should have known of this stability criteria and bought two of them and tied them side by side to increase the resistance to rolling. Any one buying a sit on Kayak should have this information. For stability the body should sit into the hull and if possible below the water surface to lower the height of the CG.

Funny video. This guy would flip a 14 foot jon boat. It's not the kayak, it's a big dude trying to show how bad a boat is. Problem is it is the wrong size boat for him. The fishing kayak from WalMart would be more suited to his size. IMHO, he should probably just stay on the bank. Hell, he'd fall off a pontoon boat.
I'm 5'5"/170# and both the 8 foot sit on top and the 10 foot sit inside kayaks I got from WalMart work fine. Had them both for over 2 years and haven't tipped either over. Nice to fish small lakes out of.

First of all, it's not a Walmart kayak. It's a Sun Dolphin kayak. Walmart doesn't actually manufacture anything. Just because you buy something at Walmart doesn't mean it was made by Walmart. Where the product is bought has no bearing on its quality.
Second, don't blame the product for idiot error.
