Hello! you used that kind of filament ? ABS or PLA .
That thickness is 1.7 or 3 millimeters

There was a FedEx commercial a few years ago which showed someone printing out a kayak and it said something to the effect of "Until you can do this.... you need us". I hope that went through your mind while you printed a kayak.

Hmm $710 AUD , certainly a nice price. I'm sure there's more to just the printing etc, like glueing each piece together. Would be nice to print one up at home, with several kayak types available.

+DOCWHOK9 He said he used 26KG. In the UK it's 20 euro per 1 KG filament. Price varies depending on seller and colour. So more like 500 Euro.
DOCWHOK9
DOCWHOK9 - 9 years ago
Hmm would have to halve that, or atleast offer the printing of a decent commercial kayak for a substantial saving. I can foresee the day where we order an item, yes even as large as a Kayak or car and simply print it out.

+Stephen Hart Maybe not. I just looked up REI's sea kayak, which is the one that looks most like this one, shape and size-wise. REI's least expensive one is $1189 as of 8/25/2014. I don't know what he spent on bolts, probably a good bit. But this isn't 4 or 5 times the cost of REI, maybe just a little more expensive.
Nilz
Nilz - 10 years ago
In total 26.3 kg of ABS was used. ABS costs ~20 € per kg so in total 526 € for plastic alone. (Or 730$).
Stephen Hart

probably 4 or 5 times as much as one you could buy at rei. 3d printing platics is expensive

Pretty cool, but really expensive, 26kg of ABS at around 30$ per kg = about 700$...plus energy, work put in. For 700$ you can buy an amazing kayak...Plastic price kills big object printing, the only thing is that you have the worlds first.

This is amazing... It could be sold as a kit or used as a mold... You could modify it with pontoons or electric motor brackets... You could design it to change its length or have addon attachments like rim to use curtain or extra strength for other gear... The  sections move slightly to reduce stress...

HOLY PEOPLE   Deuteronomy 7:6
‘We are to be a holy people onto the Lord our God, because He has chosen us to be a special people for Himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth’ … through Jesus Christ in this period of grace. We will never achieve perfection this side of heaven but seeking Him first confessing and repenting of our sins daily and the seeking Him out in all we do and say, will make us holy to Him.

Max SMoke
Max SMoke - 10 years ago
What's there to understand? It's like putting icing on a cake. Only after you put down one layer of icing, you then put down another layer of icing on top of the first layer. Repeat several hundred, or several thousand, times and you get an object.

not useless at all. for robotics, you can 3d print chasis and then cast and mold etc into metal, composites, etc. You get to design in software and then convert 3d models into physical objects this way

Its important to note he did it to see if he could. No other reason. If he was doing it because he wanted a kayak he could have bought one that was much more stable for much less money.

Peter Eikenberry

Very impressive. But looking at it from strictly an engineering a production standpoint, hardly practical. 28 parts and 42 days? Roto molded kayaks are produced in one piece and in a few hours at far less cost. Even wood kayaks take a few days and are far more beautiful. But if you want a custom kayak you've proved it can be done.  Now you need to work on reducing the weight (58 pounds!) by about half and reducing the cost. Maybe you could recover some of the cost by selling the plans.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, as a retired Coast Guard, put on your lifejacket!.  Sure, that kayak won't sink, but the cold water will get you quick without a lifejacket.
