I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska at the moment for my next adventure. I'll be off the grid tomorrow to float Noatak river. Bush pilot will take me to the Gates of the Arctic and drop me off in the mountains. I'll see you all in a month when I'm back .

Amazing video, I really enjoyed it! I often go camping and hiking but I'd like to start paddling as well. I've been reading many articles on the internet but couldn't figure out which kayak should one use for long travels as you do. Are you using a so called touring kayak? Or a crossover kayak? The mountains and the sea are both 1 hour from my place (I'm from north Italy) so I'd like to buy a versatile type of kayak which can be used in both.

I have inflatable SeaEagle kayak and folding canoe as well. Check out the SeaEagle. I don't know if this is available in Italy though.

Mr Solo Kayak Adventures great man
Don't be afraid of Bear Friend

But yes : Carry bear pepper spray on your side
And a rifle or 9mm handgun :
With 124gr 9mm GDHP +P

BUT I THINK BEAR PEPPER SPRAY IS GREAT

And i know that metal post that make a loud noise or any loud noise that bothers a bears eardrums , generally chases a Bear off

So for me :
1 . Bear Pepper Spray
2 . Noise
3 . HANDGUN / rifle ...

Bears can be imposing if partially habituated ,
Or smell food !

But a can of bear spray on your hip during your hikes is also most relevant .

THANK GOD AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL INTERACTION .

I THANK YOU MOST KINDLY SIR ...

My choice of bear spray is .44 magnum rifle or a revolver which I carry with me on all my trips.

you need to hold the axe differently, use one hand to hold it near the head at the beginning of the swing and move that hand down towards the bottom(where your other hand should/will be) as you swing for more speed, at least that's how I was taught.

33:10 What would you do if the bear came out and started approaching you? Did you bring a gun with you?
Solo Kayak Adventures
Solo Kayak Adventures - 6 years ago
Yes, I had a gun. If you continue watching the video you'll see it. If a bear approaching you have to make noise to scare him off.
If he keeps on first shot in front of him. That loud bang should take care of the problem. Most definitely you'd see him run. If it's a wrong kinda bear and he keeps on coming next shot on target.

Did you get tired of squeezing your water? That's the only downside of that filter. Great video:)

Backflushing it daily kept my filter relatively easy to operate even with silty water of Yukon.
Dave Morrow
Dave Morrow - 6 years ago
I agree. I like that filter a lot, more than any others for consistency. These have been my go to for silty rivers where that filter always gets slow: Aquamira Water Treatment Drops. They give you back an hour of your life each day spent "squeezing" :)

nice video! no annoying music, no pretentious bullshit, just man and nature. very good.
what i am curious about tho is if you need any permissions to do travels like this in the nature of alaska?
is that route you took just some route u made up by yourself or is it specifically in a public free "reservoir" where you are allowed to fish, camp, make fire at will?

anyways, greetings from germany
take care

Solo Kayak Adventures - 6 years ago
Thank you... I like this particular stretch of wilderness because it's one of the most beautiful parts of Yukon river.
There is no permit required but you do have to buy fishing license if you intend to fish there. In my opinion its nice and easy float so everyone should be able to do this.

Beautiful video, with very good timing between scenes, nothing is boring. Your personality matches perfectly with the environnement. And your rod is not "upside down" for a European viewer. I think only US fishers have the reel above the rod (If that's what people are commenting about). Anyways, you got enough pikes for everybody to agree that you know how to fish !!

'Very' cool video man! You are doing two of the things I like best , Kayak fishing and camping ! As was said by someone else .'Enjoyable to watch .Very relaxing and interesting ! We don't have many bears in the UK though, so I think I would have been bricking it at night trying to sleep in the tent : ) Oh, just out of interest ,do you ever set up one of those wire trips around your tent, with the blank cartridge, to scare an animal that gets too close to your tent at night . Only I saw one used in a program on the television one time ! Does the depth of that river vary much ,only I notice that you can camp right on the edge and it is raining quite a lot ! I liked your boat ...what make was that please ! Many thanks for posting this ,I hope you have many more such ventures .

Great; & I found your gear video & some others. How did you arrange the cabins? Pre- booked through an agency? Or just on map? What specific model (I see they have several 2 person models) of sea eagle kayak did you use? & What caliber was the, Yukon trip, rifle you brought in for bear protection?
Solo Kayak Adventures
Solo Kayak Adventures - 6 years ago
I had beef jerky, flour, rice, dehydrated fruits and protein powder with me plus I supplemented my diet with fish. Without the fish I'd be starving half way through the trip.
On my next trip I am taking pemmican with me. I made a a few batches already. It doesn't have to be refrigerated and lasts a very long time.
The kayak is inflatable very tough and easy to transport when deflated. Thanks

Great video. Heres a tip, most spinning reels have a reversqble handle. Meaning you can unscrew it & change it to the other side of the reel. It looked like you were using it upside down. Not saying thats wrong at all. A suggestion from a fellow angler.

Personally, I would consider replacing the rifle with a large caliber pistol. Reaction time, aiming point, and body mechanics always improves your advantages, especially from a pistol. Here's a quote...
"When you head into bear country, you must accept that you are no longer at the top of the food chain. Luckily, most bears usually do not want any trouble and will leave the area as soon as they detect you. However, this is not always the case and you should be prepared to defend yourself if you get in a tight situation. A good bear gun should be a part of your defense plan.

That being said, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. By using your brain and taking a few basic precautions out in the woods, you can dramatically reduce your odds of being attacked by a bear.

Give any bear that you encounter, especially a sow with cubs, plenty of space. Make lots of noise so that any bears in the area know that you are there, and carry bear spray.

Firearms should only be used as a last resort to defend yourself from a bear.

A charging bear can move extremely fast and only a hit on the bear’s central nervous system (brain or spine) is guaranteed to stop a bear in its tracks. Even on the biggest bears, the central nervous system is not a large target, so stopping a determined charging bear with a gun makes for some very challenging shooting.

Because of this, you must practice drawing and shooting your chosen gun extensively. Remember: even the biggest and most powerful bear defense guns are not guaranteed to stop a charging bear if you don’t make a good shot." http://www.wideopenspaces.com/10-best-bear-defense-guns-pics/

I'm gonna do a short video about my gear and kayak in a few days since I go camping tomorrow.
Details of my Yukon river trip will be available on a website where I am a contributor in a few weeks including GPS coordinates for cabins.
It takes a lot of time planing a trip like that studying maps and finding logistics to get there and return most efficient way possible.
My upcoming summer Alaska trip is four months away and 70% of it worked out and partially booked. It's going to be a longer trip above Arctic circle of total wilderness so it takes more time to plan.
If you gonna do the Yukon trip you won't be disappointed. Thanks and good luck.

On another note, food wise. you should consider making and taking a store of Pemmican. its loaded with protein, fat and tons of calories. you can tweak the recipe for your tastes, too.
doughnutguy82
doughnutguy82 - 6 years ago
Most often, you can move the handle to either side of the reel. that way you can run the reel hanging down, and itll be more comfortable for you.

the bear tracks were from before the rain. you can tell by the drop craters. from the look of it, it was a black bear track. be wary of them, as they have been known to track and attack humans.

love the video and look forward to the next

Amazing vid! Takes some courage doing this back country trip solo. I see you used the inflatable Sea Eagle kayak. How did it hold up against the shallows and rocks?

I'm also planning a trip with 3 other experienced canoist on the Yukon River Canadian side. Starting at Dawson City. Trip of a lifetime if you ask me!

We do a great deal of back country canoing in Temagami ( northern Ontario, Canada) but looking for something more adventurous in the far north.

Great to see like minded people and those who love the outdoors and what nature has to provide. Brings us all back to the basics and a great deal of self reflections.

If you ever need a canoe partner or if your ever in Ontario I would be interested in showing you our neck of the woods.

Keep the paddle in the water friend and the lungs full of fresh air!
Solo Kayak Adventures
Solo Kayak Adventures - 6 years ago
SeaEagle is a good quality kayak. I did a lot of trips on it in the Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands in Florida with very sharp shells around so it was well tested before I attempted going on a long trip.
One disadvantage it can't do rapids above class 2. Other than that its good all around expedition kayak.
Canada is a great place for wilderness trips and some day I'll go on a trip there for sure.
Thanks for the offer to show me around your neck of woods I might do it one day.

love the video man thanks for the time. very beautful indeed, its sad to see very little to no wild life around there. i am very surprised you found a native to the area to help u. im sucked how little bear proof the last cabin was. insteas it had more a mordon look and large open windows. need them nails in wood over the windows for the ears. surprised you came so close to a bear in said cabin.

love the video really wish you make alot more

I see you have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 or 450. I've been to Alaska a few times, both Spring and Winter, I love it. Why not carry a 12 ga and Slugs, 00 Buck and some #6 for all around usage?
duncang01
duncang01 - 6 years ago
Hogs are tough, you are correct. I had a Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun and it would kill the shooter and the shootee.
Solo Kayak Adventures
Solo Kayak Adventures - 6 years ago
This is 1892 by Chiappa in .44 mag but basically same design as Marlin you mentioned. It's a take down so it takes a lot less space for easy transportation.
Throw it in a small backpack and you are ready to go.
I hunt wild hogs with it and it's extremely effective as hogs are very tough animals. Not quite as tough as grizzlies but I think close second.
12ga is very effective too it's just not my personal choice.

Next time, if any, you go through the cabins, instead of just using the cabins and consuming the cut wood, try to contribute to the wood pile or make a repair to the cabin and leave something useful behind.
People before you did this and made your stay pleasant.

You need to use a chainsaw and cut trees to restock wood. It's national preserve and you're not allowed to do that. Park rangers take care of that as it's public use cabins.

A tip when chopping wood with big pieces and the ax is stuck. Swing it back up in the air but when it gets above your head twist it around so that the back of the ax is facing the ground and bring it down hard. This will split the wood easier and unfree your ax at the same time. Give it a go and let us know if it helps. You share with me, I like to share with you. Cheers.

you are one of the few with brains. Yes, you made some mistakes but i did see a rifle big enough to stop a bear or mad moose. Most of the people on these trips seem to miss the reality of being alone in the bush with out some sort of protection. I know that a loud noise will not chase away a predator. I'm not complaining but your drag was set way too light and you had your real upside down I'm sure you know that I've seen people on and off for the last 50 years try to fish that way it's much easier if you have it on the bottom and if the handles on the wrong side switch it around it's much more comfortable

Soup the organs, skin, eyes etc....Not as good as eating raw, but helps. I heard the early 18th century trappers on the Hudson ate themselves to death on rabbit as they had no other source of vitamins because they wouldn't eat greens, even grass would have kept them alive. I don't think SKA will have a problem, he seems a switched on guy.

My mother always made a salve from pinon pine gum and petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Melt the pitch in a disposable pan and strain it through a couple layers of gauze. Then add that much petroleum jelly and stir. Store in small, airtight containers. Use on literally everything.

In 2000, I met old boy coming down Yukon in kayak. He was giving it up at Yukon bridge. Said water filter clogged up from silt couldn't use it, so drank straight from river. He'd been at it two weeks. He planned to go to sea, but had enough at bridge. You ain't split much wood, have you? Wrong tool. Needed a wedge axe. Whew, wear me out watching that. Watch a video on using a spinning reel, rod. You had it upside down. At least you caught fish, pike, bones but good eating. Anyway, hey, I love the video! Great job with this video! I've been all over from Fairbanks, but only by car. Up to Prospect Creek on Dawson Highway. Most interesting thing I saw was a wolf. Barely glimpsed him. Saw a heap of meese.

You gotta back flush your filter daily or it will clog up.
That is not my axe. It's something I found in the cabin. It's been used and abused for a number of years.

The axe you are using to split wood is way to light, you need an eight or ten pound splitting mall. Enjoyed watching your solo adventure, you must have a lot of confidence in your abilities, there are so many circumstances where one can get hurt.

Is it just me, or does this guy seem to have no idea what he's doing? He certainly has no clue how to land a pike. And why eat pike when you can get trout and salmon? He gets points for wearing a wife beatter with all those mosquitos.
Solo Kayak Adventures
Solo Kayak Adventures - 7 years ago
How the hell did I even survive the trip right? Pure luck...
You can't catch salmon on Yukon unless you own a fishing wheel. When salmon goes to spawn in the summer it travels upstream without eating anything fueled by stored fat.
Only fish you can catch is pike and grayling in the side streams. No trout there either.
