I wonder if anyone has ever welded up a very thin gauge steel kayak ? Anybody heard of such a thing ? Only I have made a few motorcycle fuel tanks and they would definitely float and they were very light !

By watching this video it seems so easy to build a wooden kayak by yourself but it is actually extremely difficult.

A lovely thing. No you don't need a rudder but dnomyarnostaw's comment betrays a lack of experience. First, the rudder is raised when landing in surf to prevent damage and there is never a problem using your feet and hands at the same time operating a rudder and the paddle. As for the pump - carry one! I retrofitted my kayak with a foot-operated pump because it was impossible to hand-pump faster than the waves filled my kayak. I've paddled thousands of miles. Good job Sea Wolf!

The stringer on the gunwhale is uneccessary weight, and very few kayaks bother with it. I didnt see a pump to clear water after a capsize - a safety problem. A full rudder setup is also a waste on a Kayak. You are constantly adjusting the crafts direction with the paddle, so trying to manipulate a rudder at the same time is crazy. You will find this out when you try to come ashore riding a wave, and you overcorrect. The most you might need is a skeg that you can raise or lower as required.
