"...somehow manages to keep the marlin at a stones throw..."

Well, duh. You can easily tow a man in a kayak around with 20 lb line. He probably could have tied his line off to the kayak & gone to sleep for a few hours. I'll be impressed when I see someone land a marlin with 20 lb test from a fixed position.

Having caught a 150 pound striped marlin last year I can tell you that fish is nowhere near 300 pounds.  The first one might be 200 and the 2nd is approximately 100-120 lbs, maybe a bit more.  Still cool.

+Jeff from Jersey They shouldn't be fishing that light for marlin to begin with.  That just puts unnecessary stress on those fish. It only takes a pound or 2 of tension to pull a kayak. I've learned this through experience after being towed by  big tarpon.  More resistance = fish tiring faster.  I'm surprised the fish didn't die from exhaustion.
Jeff from Jersey
Jeff from Jersey - 10 years ago
great idea, but with only 20LB test line. They may be counting on any sudden runs  being absorbed by the Kayak.. If the Kayak dont SLIP, im guessing the drag has to be set PERFECTLY then, and much lighter, and so may even prolong the fight.. just a guess though.

Wow... I'm sorry that their are people who believe this to be wrong. The same people who buy their fish and chips every so often, buy their meat from the supermarket and complain about hunting and fishing. Get out and kill an animal that you are going to eat. Wake up. This is the way of the world. I have never killed an animal I wasn't going to eat or put to good use. Catch and release ensures the survival of the species.

Nothing is being "tortured." We do this in order to see what is out there, and challenge ourselves by fighting (and releasing) an animal greater than ourselves. People like you may be content with with being placid, avoiding any interactions with wild life because you think of it as "cruel." Some of us can live without wild things, while some of us cannot. You're an ignoramus, get off your ass and go fishing.

If you guys honestly think he was just fishing for smaller fish with 20 lb test then you will believe anything. The heavy duty steel braided leader that was removed from the fish is not traditionally attached to 20 lb test. I commend the guy for pulling in such a mammoth, but it was planned, and brought in with much heavier line.

ive caught 3 30+ lb carp on 15 lb line, dont belittle others accomplishments by thinking everyone is on your low level of skill.
MrMagic8ball
MrMagic8ball - 10 years ago
if you watch these guys and know what they're about and their revered status in kayak fishing then it's no lie. Small and light framed women have caught 1,000 + lb. marlin on 8-12 lb. test fishing line so guys with skill like they do with heavier line and top notch equipment can get a 250 lb'er on line that size so no need to undermine peoples accomplishments.

Reading is a great skill as long as you know how to apply what you read to real life. I live in Wisconsin and have never been marlin fishing. However I am able to take things I have read and apply them to differnt situations. You on the other hand just enjoy showing your ignorance by belittling others with your vulgar mouth because it gives you a demented sense of power and purpose while hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.
SktrJksn
SktrJksn - 10 years ago
Actually it's a very simple process. Of course you do need to have more than a basic math skill. It's very easy to compare the fish in the video to either known or easily deduced paramaters of other objects in the video such as the kayak, paddle, fishing rod. Working off of those measurements it's quite easy to come up with general numbers. Before you try to prove again how dumb you are you should pay attention in school a bit more. You might actually learn something.

Aurion2008 - 10 years ago
Yes I suppose i'm suppose to allready know this stuff without reading... a fundamental skill that you probably believe is useless. Not all of us live near the ocean or have the money an time to go out fishing for marlin.
SktrJksn
SktrJksn - 10 years ago
Obviously you don't know jack either. A large female marlin can get up to 1800 lbs however that would be about a 16 foot fish. I estimate that fish to be no more than 6 feet. Girth is about 32 to 36 inches. therefore using the accepted ratio for blue marlin (girth squared, multiplied by lower-jaw fork length, divided by 800) we come up with a weight of 116 pounds. Even if we push the measurements out to 80 inches by 42 inches it's only 176 pounds. Nowhere near 300.

Just because fish feel less pain than other mammals doesn't justify inflicting pain on them for the fun of it. Two wrongs don't make a right! In fact, the main issue is not the physical discomfort but the physiological stress that fish have to endure throughout the process (5 long hours in this case!). And when it's done, the fish are totally exhausted, which makes them less effective predators and more vulnerable prey for subsequent hours.

ok, what you say about the mouth of the fish is 100% untrue. fish, have very sensitive mouths, for two reasons, they are to stupid to not eat certain things, so the mouth does the touching and sensing and spits out unwanted eaten bits, 2nd fish have either electro magnetic field impulse sensors or antenna's used to sense and feel food. Now do they feel pain in the same way as a person, no but their mouths are sensitive. please don't make shit up to justify your point.

Fishing is a fun activity and a great thing to pass on to others and future generations. It really makes you appreciate nature and want to conserve our natural resources. It's too bad many haven't experienced it and see it as a negative thing. Not everyone is as fortunate as me to be brought up on the water.

@chrisflvs442 and @durianriders: Sport fishing IS a violent and truly unnecessary activity, but i see the 'fun' you can have putting innocent animals who are just trying to make their living peacefully, following nature's order, into the 'fight of their lives'. I don't see much difference to a rodeo for example. The land needed for growing cattle is FAR larger and ecologically more damaging than crops not to mention predatory fishn. If both of u were serious, u would try to get better informed.

@smt2833 It's called a challenge. Some people enjoy making things harder on themselves. Second, the film was most likely caught on some type of boat that has a live well. Check out this video from KayakFishingTales watch?v=iotXSGn6mp0&feature=relmfu . At the end they're on a boat. They'd be stupid not to bring a boat with this being this far out in the ocean. Not everyone wants to fish from a charter boat with no challenge.
