Thanks for putting out all these videos on the Catch 130HD! I've been waiting for more details on the kayak since they were first announced. Ive fished out of a friend's outback numerous times and love it. For as often as I get out and kayak fish though, I'm finding it hard to justify spending that much money on one. The pelican is definitely at a price point I'm interested in and would be willing to sacrifice a few extras to keep cost down. I've been using a non-fishing sit inside kayak to fish for the last 5 years, anything would be an improvement. The pedal drive kayaks appeal to me mostly for the ability to easily troll and cover longer distances in less favorable conditions.Keep the videos coming, thanks!

No reason to buy a budget kayak when guy can get the grade A for the same price slightly used. Of course it very by region but around CA a 2017 outback can be had for about $1600.

Sorry, don't want to be negative - the Pelican is nice for the price, and has lots of space but beyond that the finish is like an old 1970's naugahyde sofa and it's slow. I'd put in extra money for the Compass or maybe a better comparison would be with the Riot Mako 12. Doesn't have the room of the Pelican, but a good hull design, relatively light and I think it would be quite a bit faster. Also better for a surf launch.

I think if Pelican redesigns the stern to be 4 inches narrower to cut back on the drag/noise I think they would dominate the budget kayak market...still not a bad boat for the price
Aliex Folgueira

Yessss please!! It creates drag. Make it narrower

I'm very impressed w/ the Pelican for the $. I wonder about the life span of the HD, it's hull insert... & how much abuse can it take...like hitting a stump in the water... ( I have done that a few times w/ my Hobie... so far not a big deal to fix) But I'm still keeping the Pelican Catch HD130 on my list ... for now... I want to see how it compares the Compass & the Lightning Strike
Aliex Folgueira
Aliex Folgueira - 5 years ago
I'll compare it to the compass soon, I think this drive will not be as rugged as the Hobie one but pelican has great customer service, let's see how it handles it over time

Pelican should be compared to a Hobie Compass Not to the outback.
Aliex Folgueira

Tim Percy Kayak Fishing

I assume the Pelican molding process isn't strong enough to handle the drive system, so they needed to make the insert to handle the force of the drive.
Pelican International
Pelican International - 5 years ago
Actually, the reason we decided to build independent housing is to ensure that the boat is never damaged by the pedal drive. It makes any housing issues easy and fast to repair. Plus, it leaves us plenty of flexibility for the development of future fun things! ;-)
Triberius
Triberius - 5 years ago
The molding process isn’t the issue, Pelican uses twin sheet thermoforming and not rotomolding. Basically a Pelican kayak is made in two halves then welded together. The sheets can’t stretch enough without making them too thin to create a port for the drive. The insert seals off the internal gap between the sheets inside the hull, stiffens the deck and hull, and provides a more rugged point for the peddling motion to apply stress.

Great review Aliex. The Hobie looks sleeker and faster. There is a lot of comments regarding reverse on the drive system. I think the Hobie reverse system is a bit of a gimmick to match the competition. If reverse was really important to you then better to buy a kayak with the bicycle type drive. Hobie should offer the Outback with the GT drive as an option and lower the price.
Aliex Folgueira
Aliex Folgueira - 5 years ago
The mirage drive reverse feels weird at first but after you use it for a while it gets easier I do use it a lot but nothing like instant reverse for sure

The main drawback with the pelican is that I can see is it doesn't have a port for a sounder or did I miss it? It's called a catch but no sounder port very strange or am I blind Alex? Also new video from us on Monday hopefully snorkeling at our local spot with bikini girl Melly.
Aliex Folgueira

+Aliex Folgueira yeah but that's super messy those arms and just another thing to get in the way of your fishing line. For a Yak of 2499 dollerydoos in Australia I think it is should come with a sounder port, even my old Malibu jobby has one.
Aliex Folgueira
Aliex Folgueira - 5 years ago
It only has two scupper holes but no transducer hole, but you can easily add a transducer arm using a railblaza kit
Triberius
Triberius - 5 years ago
it doesn't have a transducer mounting recess in the hull, but a Scotty #141 transducer mounting arm is only like $35. I bought the Pelican, and that is what I ended up doing. The nice part was the transducer arm has a gearhead on the top allowing you to use their universal fish finder mount ($15) for the head unit eliminating the need to run a lot of cable with the limited hull access on the Pelican. There is a downside to the Hobie, it is designed only for most Lowrance products, if you want a Garmin, Hummingbird, or Raymarine etc. it may not mount in right out of the box leaving you to modify the mounting point or bracket, and depending on the transducer style, it may not fit in the recess without paying for an aftermarket cover plate. I also don't believe using the in-hull recess you can't use a side scanning fish finder.

I like the separate hull insert Pelican used for the Mirage Drive. The Hobie hulls crack in that spot sometimes. With the Pelican, you can probably just replace the insert, if it cracks.

I love the Outback but, this new one is def thinner in the hull that previous years, you can feel the plastic is just not as thick and flimsy... hopefully not an issue in the future.

Some other things that might not have been mentioned.

1. Hobie is most likely faster that the pelican, due to the difference in drives and hull design.

2. Seat quality, if I am not mistaken the hobie seat looks like it is made of ABS plastic, the pelican seat looks like it is made of metal.

3. The pelican rudder system has metal wires for control, the hobie looks to have some sort of poly rope?

Personally I am going to buy a Catch 130 hd, as I really like the stronger, lighter plastic that they use, and all the features that are offered for 1500.
Aliex Folgueira
Aliex Folgueira - 5 years ago
The pelican is slower due to the wide stern, I tested it.
I like the seat on the pelican better more confortable
Hobie rope is better for saltwater applications because the metal will rust soon, it last about a year or so

Great comparison. The review definitely makes the pelican look like a good contender, especially for the price point. I do have some concerns of the construction of the pelican though. I don’t have any issues with the seam, just like with woodworking, the glued areas are typically stronger than the non glued areas. However, my wife does have a pelican trailblazer, cheapo 200 dollar sit in kayak made from their RamX plastic. Very light and convenient, but very thin Hull. I’ve never looked into their sit on tops, how’s the Hull thickness on the pelican compared to the hobie ? If it’s as thin as the trail blazer I’d be worried around eventually wearing or denting/puncturing the hull.
Aliex Folgueira
Aliex Folgueira - 5 years ago
I have the trailblazer as well, I turned into a go kart kayak. I may do some drilling into it and see how thick it is
Chris Pilot
Chris Pilot - 5 years ago
The likely reason for the drive mount insert in the Pelican versus the molded in mount on the Hobie is because the Pelican hull isn't rotomolded and is two pieces. It would be difficult to mold the mount into a two-piece hull.

I think Hobie is the most inflated brand in the world. There's simply no reason for it to be at least 2x the price of their competition -- Native, Wilderness, Feelfree, etc.
Pelican International
Pelican International - 5 years ago
+Chris Pilot Thanks!
Chris Pilot
Chris Pilot - 5 years ago
+Pelican International that's a much better design! I know numerous people with Hobie's that have had cracks develop (from stress, impacts, etc.) in the mount area of the Mirage Drive, and it resulted in the entire hull being replaced. Pelican has taken a much smarter approach.
Pelican International
Pelican International - 5 years ago
So one of the reasons we chose to produce a separate housing is to allow for future flexibility as well as to make it possible to replace and repair the housing easily if ever it is overly stressed or is damaged.
Chris Hollenhors
Chris Hollenhors - 5 years ago
Something I've heard about the hobie brackets as well is they come loose due to the looks being the only point of contact so as you pedal the locks are essentially the flex point and with pelican having the lock style they have if it becomes damaged you can easily replace the damaged locks instead of having to figure out how to ship the hobie and be without your yak
All The Hobbies
All The Hobbies - 5 years ago
Totally agree on the price of those Hobies. I could see Pelican using that drive insert as an advantage in the future. I mean they really could develop a drop in electric drive that would just bolt right into that existing well. Or an insert that allowed you to mount any trolling motor in that hole. They would dominate with that versatility.

With the increase in cost yearly that Hobie does, they should have done a better job of getting their kayaks waterproofed. Especially since the yak is advertised to be an offshore sailing vessel. I am still not sold on Pelican with its rivets vs bolt ins qnd the shell is made. Weld seams still weaken versus a roto mold. The Lightning Strike has everything the Hobie says less reverse and is 1000.00 less expensive.

You can crush a Hobie with the pressure needed to break that seam. Rotomold kayaks use a softer plastic and have inconsistencies in the hull thickness.

waiting to check out the Lightning Strike also.

If I'm in the market I'd pay 500 more for the Hobie compass

one advantage with the Compass is you can upgrade to Turbo Fins or 180 drive.

+Aliex Folgueira I'm looking at used and since I have a big truck either will work. I am leaning toward the 12 if I find the one for me. I'm going from a sit in 10ft. So it's gonna be a huge upgrade. I appreciate all of your reviews over my last year of looking.

As the blue collar guy I cannot get over the 1300 dollar price difference in these boats. I realized the Hobie has some advantages and is built a little better but I can't see more than a grand worth of extras in the two. Maybe do a comparison to the compass ? More apples to apples. For me in this one the price difference alone wins this round for Pelican to me..

+Aliex Folgueira I'm not sure if they can with the current drive system would depend on the extensiveness of the patent.

the Pelican 180 clone I think is way off. I don't believe that paten expires for awhile.

+David Groves if they are going to use the Hobie mirage drive design for that than that will be a few more years. I honestly haven't found the quick reverse in Hobie that quick in the ones I've been on a test day on. For fishing thou I don't own one yet seems the pedal drive is best for getting there and just use a paddle to turn around or move around silently better. I agree with you on with increased competition benefits consumers making more affordable option s in the market.

+Blue Collar Fishing Once they offer a reverse feature in the Pelican catch drive its going to force a drastic price reduction in the competitors pedal drives..This Kayak and others are just the opening salvo..
The 2020 offerings will be quite interesting..

You could almost but two of the pelicans for 1 of the Hobie that also wins to me as you get someone else on the water I'd you're looking to spend that much

Hey Alex, I might be wrong but I think the rivets you are referring to on the Pelican are actually Alan or Torx bolts. They look removable to me but obviously I don't have a physical kayak here to look haha. xD

I have been thinking of doing something like that too so I can have bixpy there... The handles being using rivets is not a great idea nor the rudder
Triberius
Triberius - 5 years ago
+Aliex Folgueira I noticed the mounting plate for the rudder is riveted in as well, I'm thinking about ordering some 3/8" thick HDPE and making backing plates for it and the bow and stern carry handles and replacing all the rivets with panhead bolts and locking nuts. I'd rather spread the pressure out along a larger section of the hull wall than rely on expansion pressure from the rivets on a small surface area. It should reduce the risk of cracks.
Aliex Folgueira

They are rivets and I though about replacing them with bolts and washer and nuts
Triberius
Triberius - 5 years ago
+Aliex Folgueira If you add a front hatch you could always drill out the rivets and replace them with bolts and add a backplate for extra strength.
Aliex Folgueira

I'll take a look at it again, they look like rivet
