It looks great. Just wondering why you went with a plywood bottom if you were going to cover the bottom anyway. Would it not have been easier and cheaper to just use a glass bottom? As a side note, is there any danger of the rocks scratching the sealer and causing a leak it you had not put sand down?

Fantastic idea, great job, beautiful tank. But as a few people before i doubt in durability of epoxy at the bottom. You can not control whats happening with the plywood when it's covered by sand. But being curious I've watched your "Feeding the Beggars" film so as I could see, the tank is OK for now, so good luck with it.

You have a lot of guts. Great building skills, also, btw. I just couldn't trust a sealed piece of wood for the bottom of my tank. I would have probably went with a 1/8" piece of plexi over it, at least. One pinhold in that wood that didn't seal properly and it will soak through, destroy the wood, and leak onto the floor.

Looks great though!

I used to have Florida gars in a 100 gallon with African wood stumps, all covered with moss and underwater ferns, and other mid light plants, as well as lots of alternate swimming pathways through the stumps (which included roots. I always dreamed of making my own tankusing plywood like this. I thought about putting a mangrove tree in the middle growing out into my room above the tank as centerpiece. I would have a high intensity grow light above the mangrove to help it and the many other plants grow. Cool video!

It really depends on the size of the tank and whats available in your area. Generally anything under 150 gallons is cheaper to buy than to build. Also in my case aquariums in my area retail much higher than other parts of the U.S. even used tanks run high at times.

You didn't cover the bottom with glass? What did you use to seal the wood and how sure are you that it won't leech into the water over time? In general I think it's best to have inert surfaces only at the interface to a biological system since anything else can be pretty unpredictable.
VanillaSnake21
VanillaSnake21 - 7 years ago
The sand is a micro-abrasive it's constantly wearing away anything that it lies on, any time you siphon or move the the sand around it's going at it. You can tell by just looking at a glass aquarium bottom, there are always tiny scratches visible throughout. Of course this is matter of many years until it fully erodes the layer of resin but nevertheless there is constant leeching of abrated resin particles that go into the water. All that would be needed to fix this is a very thin plate of acrylic.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Not to say it cant be damaged, but the resin is very hard and resistant. Care should still be taken as to not damage it. The sand actually helps with this as it acts as a protective layer between the bottom and anything sharp/ hard like the rocks. If the tank ever does fail an update will be uploaded to youtube fully explaining how and why. I am confident that day will not come.
VanillaSnake21
VanillaSnake21 - 7 years ago
But what will happen if for example over time the sand or the rocks will scratch some off or rub through, not only will the particles go into the water but the wood could get exposed too, and that will just destroy the whole setup if not noticed in time.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
I used a fiberglass resin to seal the wood, if properly applied and fully cured It will not leech anything.

Amazing job, I used to have a 100 gal fresh water tank w/ a variety of "sharks" and assorted medium to large fish. Then I noticed I was loosing fish daily, and one of my "sharks" was getting HUGE. Finally place him in his own tank, using goldfish as food.

I'm surprised the bottom is not glass, just the glazed wood. Did you get a lot or tannins in the water? How long did it take to get clear?
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
The resin completely seals the wood so no water ever comes in contact with the actual wood. I did have tannins from my drift wood however those took about a month to get cleared out if I remember correctly. It was also about a month for the tank to cycle fully.

I would have made it BIGGER! lol really it has been functioning very well. only thing I wish I had done different were to have used all new glass. Two panels were recycled from a used aquarium and have some scratches in them. Other than that I would build it the same way.

They totally thrive on this freeze dried food called "Tubi-flex worms". They come in a different sized bags, but each piece is a cube, almost exactly like a sugar cube. I got them coming up out of the water to eat them right outta my hand. I wish I never stopped breeding them. Super easy to care for and breed too, for that matter! If you ever get started on them, let me know. Of course, it would help if I subscribed eh?! LOL

that hold build kinda worries me. it's not the integrity. it's the chemicals you used.
GE1 Silicon seems to be safe, but it's questionable. I've heard of people fixing their sumps with it, and i've heard of some people building with it. did you use GE1 Silicon or some other household shit?? Silicon is notorious for leaching out harmful chemicals into the tank water causing health problems for the plants and fish.

the part that worries me the most is the plywood bottom. what did you glaze that with?? i can just see it leaching all kinds of chemicals out into the water.

i see this video is about a year old. have you noticed any short life spans in fish, or difficulty keeping plants alive for more than a few months??

amazing build for the most part, but i think you just made half the tank builders in the world cringe with the chemicals you used. if it's GE1 silicon that might be alright, but that bottom....i wonder how many years it will last, on top of what kind of chemicals leached out, and how it affected the life span of the animals.

that's just "textbook" it doesn't hurt them. most of them will emerge and find something to crawl along if they feel like it, some will continue to grow along the bottom. i've got lots of anubis and have done a lot of different stuff with them. i like one in particular that continued to grow under the sand and came up on the other side of glass, over a rock, and back into the sand / soil mix substrate. these anubis are about 4YEARS old, and no problems yet.

Not so much a comment but a question. Would it be a silly idea or dangerous to use fiberglass with the resin before the 2nd coat of resin or whatever combination of resin with fiberglass? I just made a beardy enclosure for my guy and a tank to replace my 70gal is next. The Oscars are 10" and growing like crazy.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Jon Deacon I think I would maybe up the thickness of glass to 12mm just to add a higher safety rating, and maybe do one extra coat of resin. Neither of which is needed by any indication but would just be even more peace of mind. I would recommend finding a glass thickness calculator online for your build because a few different factors go into figuring out what you need.
Jon Deacon
Jon Deacon - 7 years ago
Wojo 77 ok, no worries just a thought if there was any issue or question on how long this might last. I'm starting my tank this week. any suggestions on the thickness of glass and or improvements you'd of made in retrospect?

Jon Deacon Adding glass fiber will increase the strength. No negatives about it that I'm aware of. Just wasn't necessary for my build.

Awesome build man, I just have 2 questions before attempting my own. What thickness glass did you end up going with and why did you use euro bracing only on 2 sides? Correct me if I'm wrong (probably the case) but if its a square tank isn't the bowing going to be similar on all 4 sides?
Gerhard Woest
Gerhard Woest - 7 years ago
Wojo 77 awesome, thanks for the feedback I am definitely going to attempt my own build soon.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Gerhard Woest I used 9mm thick glass. That is actually the thinnest I could have safely used. The size and depth of the tank will affect the thickness of glass required. I didn't technically use a true euro brace. A true euro brace would butt up on the inside plane of the panels to prevent them from bowing. I was not worried about bowing glass, but I wanted a sleek way of reinforcing the corners. That is why mine is laid on top and not on the inside. This also gave me more of a tolerance for the size of the brace to be off +/-

Where did you get the rocks? And, how did you make sure that they were ready for the aquarium?
MTRX 2010
MTRX 2010 - 7 years ago
im gonna go ahead and try it. i got a gallon of vinegar, and some driftwood i wanna use. including some fresher wood samples. i been wanting to add some tannins to this tank and mellow out the color a little bit. i got some in there already, but wasn't enough color. kinda came out yellowish, and i wanted a more light tea color.

normally i just soak em in chlorine for a while, then rinse, transfer to a different container with clean water, and lots of dechlorinator added, and let it soak in there for a few days to give the dechlorinator a chance to work it's way around. then rinse.

sometimes i just resort to boiling the wood, but boiling always leaches out all the tannins, so i'm not gonna bother boiling this time around. ill try the vinegar and see how that works out.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
MTRX 2010 yes it can, and is much safer. I used vinegar to treat the drift wood in my 200 gal. I first hosed/ brushed off the drift wood. then sprayed it directly with vinegar. After that I placed all the driftwood in a large bin and poured in 3 gallons of vinegar and filled the rest with water (10 gallon bin). The exact mix doesn't matter.
I let that soak for a few days to be safe ( I used a large very dense piece). The one quick rinse with clean water and it's good to go. No risk of chlorine in the aquarium.
MTRX 2010
MTRX 2010 - 7 years ago

Adam Greene I collected them from a relatives property. The way I prepare anything I collecte from nature is to; first hose it off very well, then give it a very good brush, blast it with the hose, spray/ soak with white vinegar, then rinse completely clean.

I kept waiting for him to get out the large bottom piece of glass and put it down, but that moment never came.  I'm SHOCKED.  I have two concerns, first, obviously the failure of the tank, which will inevitably happen, and two, the poor fish are swimming in a soup of chemical residue of whatever he put on that plywood.  When I was big into fish keeping I wouldn't even keep chemicals in the same ROOM with my tanks, afraid that the fumes would be sucked in via the bubble rocks and infuse those fumes into my fish's water.  Those poor babies.
MTRX 2010
MTRX 2010 - 7 years ago
also now that you mention about the bubblers sucking in fumes and diluting in the water you're totally right about that. same technique is used to purify co2 from waste plants. they bubble the dirty through huge tanks of algea to clean up the co2 from the air just bubbling it through the water. same principle behind a water pipe.

a guy gave me a 30GALLON to rescue one time. -and he used to smoke cigars in his apartment constantly. the sent had worked it's way all the way to below the substrate into the very waste matter of the fish. no shit(no pun).

i had to wash the gravel several times to get the smell of cigars out of it. even the water smelled of cigar smoke, and it was in the filters and everything. only a few of those fish are still around, and it was around 2012ish that this happened. a couple of plecos and a rosey barb survived.

i know first hand that the bubblers have the very effect that you feared. i don't spray aerosols in my room. i have over 200GALLONS encircling my walls, and many of the tanks have bubblers. anything in the air will be in the tanks if present long enough.
MTRX 2010
MTRX 2010 - 7 years ago
this is exactly my concern. i was wondering why nobody else noticed the issue about chemicals leaching into the water. there is always residue when deal with resins, paints, enamels, lacquers, etc. i always hit it with windex and a good absorbent cloth after any job to get the stuff off. I've been fish keeping for quite some time now. nowadays i do self contained ecosystems, and have never put any kind of glue or resin in my tank that was certified tank quality. i seen ppl use silicon for windows and general purpose stuff, and just watch their fish drop like flies over time. always starts with health problems, frequent illness, and short life spans. i dread the thought of the roots working down below the sand against the resins too. roots can really plow into stuff. i think if i was a fish in there i would be able to smell the chemicals for quite some time. after a few years i would imagine it might settle down, but i've seen water disintegrate all kinds of plastics and materials. so who knows. im gonna hold off on this idea until i find out more about the resin effects on animals. There's tons of people suddenly starting to do this on the fish DIY forums. If by next year or so you start hearing about plecos, and bottom feeders passing on after only a couple of years, you'll know something serious is going on, and perhaps this isn't a good idea after all. i've seen things as simple as a PENNY crash a fish tank. can't imagine what this could do if the resin's aren't up to aquarium quality standards. 8(

THANK YOU SO MUCH for replying and setting me straight.  I may be incorrect, and I DEARLY hope so, because IF I am, you have a truly LOVELY  piece of art that ANY fish would be DELIGHTED to call home!!!  I hope you take a lot of videos of their behavior in that tank, I found it interesting that even tho they had all that room to swim in, they still seemed bunched up in the corner...  LOL  =)  And either way, following your dreams = good!
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
ambulance girl If properly applied and fully cured the coating cannot / will not leach anything. I have a lot of $$$ and time invested into my fish and I can assure you that I would not throw that away by having them swim in "chemical soup". As for the tank failure I am confident through my research that it will last the life of any normal aquarium. But if I am wrong I will not shy away I will document it and share it here. That has been my plan from the start to offer another technique / design for others to consider and build off of. I do welcome criticism as it helps develop stronger ideas, so please don't take this with a negative tone.

Great job, I like Aquariums, but... I don't trust that "no glass at the bottom" of all that water.... I've seen pieces of wood that break open with just some constant moisture, but if it is taken care properly and timed inspection on the surface that is holding all the structure that should be ok, still I live at the 5th floor of my building... I probably wouldn't go for this, but still that's a pretty amazing Aquarium!

What I hate is when I read comments that disagree with the content creator and then instead of some respectful constructive criticism the person commenting cuts down the creator. If you don't like the design why the negativity? People have been making plywood tanks for a long long time with little problem. You can do anything wrong. Does that mean if you make a mistake the whole process is wrong and no one else is allowed to try? Crazy world we live in when everyone is so afraid to fail they don't try.

Beach sand? That's pretty stupid. It is too fine for proper water circulation - it will form too dense ground and the roots of your plants will die. The size of sand grain should be 2-3 mm. I have used two different meshes to get proper fraction. And water is foggy, which is an indication that biosyjtem have not yet balanced. You have to put plans in ground and wait 2 weeks, and when it's clear, settle fishes.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Evgeny Petrov No offense taken, I just get told alot that plants can't/ will not grow in sand. And it just cracks me up because this is not 100% law. I just want people to know it is possible and with great success.
Evgeny Petrov
Evgeny Petrov - 7 years ago
Wojo 77, thanks, no offence from me. I was a witness of one relatively big aquarium installations when guy have used the sand as the ground. Everything went wrong after that. And the literature says that fine sand is bad idea. I am too on the way to start a fresh water 170 l aquarium and will probably film the steps about how it goes

+Wojo 77 Holy smokes !!! That is waaay over-priced and I'm glad you did it on your own. I would pay someone $1800-$2000 to build one. Anyone higher than that is a total rip-job. That must be in US dollars right ? I'm talking $1800-$2000 Canadian. I like your stand too, with the rivets and that leather, looks really nice with your chair and that aqua blue/turquoise paint on your wall. It looks so relaxing. I could fall asleep looking at the tank and the overall ambiance of the room -- really awesome -- jut what I need. I'm looking forward to an update of that tank. F1nddatruth
F1nddatruth - 7 years ago
The bottom on a 4' x 4' tank that is 18-24" deep would probably need to be 3/8" thick , not cheap anywhere in the US. Quick Google search put's 1/2" 48x48 at $280 which is actually a pretty good price but still $200 more than what Wojo reports spending.
OldM8Alfie
OldM8Alfie - 7 years ago
oh damn, i see. glass here is not that expensive so thats why i was confused. thanks
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
The bottom piece of glass has to be very thick, making it very costly. In my case it would have been over $500 just for that one piece of glass. The plywood was $50 + $30 for the fiberglass resin.

Interesting build, thanks for sharing! I have been involved in aquariums both fresh and salt for about 35 years now. (built a few of my own from acrylic including a 375 gallon) This is the first time I have seen a glass tank with a wood bottom. Cool idea. Although, I was wondering why you just applied the epoxy resin without fiberglass cloth. I am concerned the resin you used will leach toxins into the water over time. I would recommend Pond Armor to your viewers since it's non-toxic. I hope it last many years without issue...

Cheers,
Greg
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
I have heard a lot of good things about Pond Armor. I defiantly will try it in future projects. One of the reasons I used the resin the way I had is because no one else had. I wanted to provide people with a resource on it whether it fails or succeeds. Now when the question arises of whether epoxy resin is safe or if it will last people will have a reference as I intend to update until failure or retirement.

why not just stick a thinner sheet of glass on top of the plywood and then seal it to the other glass no need to coat your plywood
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Do you like disaster movies? because that is how you get an epic flood lol. The bottom not only acts as a seal but also holds the sides together. It is the most Important structural member of the tank. Too thin and it will crack from the pressure and then catastrophic failure.

I do not understand the point of having a plywood bottom. Are there any benefits to that? Even the most expensive plywood will not be perfectly flat. I could see this turning into a disaster with time.
Ron Johnson
Ron Johnson - 7 years ago
Thank you for sharing that. In that case, I may build a plywood bottom planted aquarium some day. No fish, at least not until it sat with water in it for a few months in order to make sure it wouldn't leak. I wouldn't quite trust myself with making a functioning tank the first time around.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
It is a cost saving measure. Plywood Is 1/5th the cost of the very thick piece of glass needed for the bottom. That one panel of glass was over $500, the entire tank with stand was only $1,200.

Awesome build. My only suggestion to ANYONE using this as their guide to build any tank is to use a good RTV adhesive/sealant and not just GE type 1 sealant. Slightly more expensive on the front end but provides a MUCH greater bond than sealant alone. I personally use Momentive (GE) RTV 108(clear) or 103(black) for any tank that I build or re-seal.  Great video, looks amazing! Hope to see a beautiful saltwater setup follow up video.

can we do with glass bottom of same dimension? if yes, what should be the thickness or glass?
HUNTCs
HUNTCs - 7 years ago
1" glass? Are you kidding? Theres only 0.05 bar pressure on the bottom, with 50cm water level. Any glass can survive that with proper support under, like plywood+sytrofoam or closed cell polyfoam. The bottom of my tank is 10mm thick and the water level is 70cm. Nice video btw, but the 1" is way overkill quess. The thickness of the bottom glass can be the same thickness with the sides.
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 7 years ago
Yes, glass of the same dimension can be used. I would recommend using 3/4 inch at a minimum, 1'" would be the safest. Glass of that size and thickness is going to have a significant cost, that is why I used the plywood/ resin bottom.

Toriless
Toriless - 7 years ago
You must be thinking off thin 1/4" glass not 3/4" glass.  Clearly window glass is too thin. Still I would try a few local glass stores.  As long as you to not do any fancy beveling, edge smoothing, etc. you can cut the price in half.  Each extra really jack the price up.  A thick  tempered 4 foot glass top with rounded edges would cost and much as everything else.  I was doing research for coffee table tank.   A large thick (table top safe) tempered glass with rounded edges is expensive.  Sheet glass is fraction of the cost.  Not sure how thick you would need it but certainly less then acrylic which has bowing issues when under 1/2" and 4 foot plus.  You will notice that even ATM with their 1 1/2 or 2 inch acrylic puts wood under it.  Professional aquariums seem to use about 4 inches.
Robert M
Robert M - 7 years ago
+Toriless I would not use a mirror for this application. What you are talking about is not the same. Mirrors are not able to withstand any where near the force that much water exerts. I like saving money too, but it is not always the best way to go. Sometimes spending more up front saves you a lot more over the lifetime of an item.
Toriless
Toriless - 7 years ago
He might have save money just buying a 1/4" non-beveled 4'x4' mirror at Home Depot or something similar. I have 20 gallon long (clear back) that I used some mineral oil to and then a printed background on the back side. I then got a $6 1/8 mirror and trimmed it (CAREFULLY using a glass cutter) and a tube of silicone to secure it behind the background to secure it permanently and block any possible light penetration through the background. If I were 60" x 12" x 1/8" mirror at glass store it would probably cost $30-50, not $6. I remember pricing a tempered glass top for a coffee table tank and it cost more the the entire shipment of IPE wood and 3/4 -1 1 1/4" acrylic pieces requited to build a top end tank and that was just for a simple round edged non-beveled piece.
Robert M
Robert M - 7 years ago
+Toriless I understand that and commented about that already if you read the prior two comments. The guy has a small fortune already invested into the project, so to me it makes no sense to not get some more glass for the bottom. You could even buy smaller pieces and put them together to make the bottom since it is cheaper to buy several small pieces instead of one large one. Using glass or even plastic minimizes any potential catastrophic failures in the future and some possibly very costly repairs if that much water somehow found it's way out into the house. I would be concerned that a homemade fish tank of that size with a wooden bottom, if it were to fail then home owner's insurance might refuse to cover any damage.
Toriless
Toriless - 7 years ago
The bigger you go the cheaper it is to use wood and coat it with a pond paint.
Robert M
Robert M - 7 years ago
+iammyantinerd I understand that, but he is putting so much time and money into it already that it doesn't make sense to me to not use glass or some other material. That is just my thinking and not a criticism.

Those Rosy Barbs weren't harmed in any way that I could see. With so few fish in such a large quantity of water, ammonia and nitrites would never build up enough to be harmful. He also added water, décor and plants from another tank, which is what actually jump starts the nitrification cycle. The fish are just there to provide a source of ammonia for the bacteria to eat.

Ive been keeping tropical fish for well over 35 years and always "seeded" new tanks the same way with no fish loss.  This method has always worked well for me.
BrunoTheHamster

Fantastic. How long does the epoxy typically last? Meaning does it degrade over time like 5-10 years and have any chance of leaks or is it effectively like having a solid thin sheet of plastic that's nearly indefinite?

Use pool paint (5-20 years) or pond paint instead. It will last longer. Sani-tred also make some polyurethane and liquid rubber (that hardens) options.

Fiberglass resin is Polyester and not as strong as epoxy, but I would have thrown in a layer of glass matt because if water ever penetrates to that furniture grade plywood it won't be pretty. He could have gotten away with polyester resin which is much cheaper with a layer of matt. Good job anyway.

if your using polyester resin and not epoxy then DO NOT LET IT CURE. EPOXY will stick to anything so you can let it cure and build it in layers. Polyester will only stick to other polyester and only if it has not cured...

Nice tank Wojo77 :) a little note if you want to build a second project, another new tank. Look at there http://www.aqua-terra-fanatics.de/details-aquarien/
Picture no. 4 and 5 below, how he works with the silicone. It is more safety for a square tank, less tension. sorry, link in german language. dont want to improve like a teacher, just a better solution for more safety. I know you have a wood ground, but maybe in future if you want to build with glass. However its possible to work like this above the glass I mean on top. (sry. for my bad english) greetings

if the glass of the bottom tank cracked. Can I use silicon to seal the crack first & then use waterproof plywood put it there? Will it hold the weight? The tank size is 48"x15"x18" . thx
Wojo 77
Wojo 77 - 8 years ago
I would recommend absolutely not doing that. A repair in that manner would not be structurally sound. For a tank that size it may actually be cheaper to just replace the glass with a new piece of glass of the same size and thickness. call your local glass shop and get a quote before you decide to use plywood or glass. But with either one you need to remove the old glass.

Amazing job dude. I am hoping to build one like this next summer. How much should I budget just for the build part (if you don't mind my asking)?

my project was $1,200 total for the tank, stand, some power tools, and even a few screw ups along the way lol. minus the last two it would have been less than $1000.
