40% Is a bit excessive and will not help the bio system fully establish, particurlarly in a tank of yours size.15-25% is more than sufficient. This will have Even more of an effect with people have hard water issues, like my self! Unless there is an exsisting issue like readings that are off the chart, then a 40-50% water change is Needed. Dingy water can be caused for multiple reasons, te Green, cloudy and alge filled water. Typically mean high nitrate, that sparks Alge blooms, or wrong type of lighting that's fuleing alge to grow. I have 3 tanks 150 gallon with African chiclids, 90 gallon that has an Oscar with black convicts, and Jack Dempsey. Along with my 45 gallon community tank I breed fancy tail guppies and veil angles with. Have over 15 years experience with aquariums. Avoid the CO2 systems if your plants are thriving.

Hey Mike I've asked a few question now. I have another here. I see in this video that you have two of those circulation pumps or water fan like things, pointed right toward the top of your tank. Is that to create water movement so your fish get enough oxygen in the water. I have a Fluval 305 for my 75 gallon and an extra Power filter that I have to leave on because when I have turned it off my fish start going to the top of the water and acting weird. The power filter or hang on the back is disrupting my plants underneath it though and I need to get rid of it. Would getting some of those circulation pumps and pointing them to the top of the water like you did be a good replacement for getting oxygen into the water or could I even get a strong air bubbler. By the way I have about 20 fish in my 75, all about 2 to 4 inches long and my tank is heavily planted. If you could recommend anything it would be great if you also told me a brand or a specific model. I saw an awesome air bubbler in one of your videos and do not know where to get something like that. Thank you

I've had 50 gallon tanks my whole life and I clean my tanks once a year. I use under gravel filters running two 50gph powerheads with air pumps to them. I have large amounts of cichlids and each tank has a raphial catfish and a pleco running close to a foot long. Tank looks amazing and all I have to do is add water once a month haha. And they don't smell like dank lake water either. Best way to keep a tank and certain fish like eals like the under gravel flow used to have peacock eals and they thrived in the conditions.

Carbon strips the chemicals and impurities from the water like liquid ferts

I also dose liquid ferts. So I guess I'm wrong, I guess I need to remove my Carbon and replace it with more bio balls,  my tank is crystal clear, but very slow plant growth, I do everything exact as your doing on this tank except for the carbon. darn, wasting ferts right.

I also supplement my Osmosis water with Easy Life Easy Carbo along with Small Fluval Co2 Nano Cylinder passed through Dennerle Nano Reactor. The soil is ADA Amazon Aqua Soil.I began this on 1st of April 2016.Since then I have only one time cleaned the filter and I only top up the water after evaporation .I have not added Fish as yet.. But before adding. I will certainly monitor pH/kh and Co2 contents..

My tank is not rely cloudy but its not crystal clear either and i don't know why, my tank is 60 Liters and my filter is for up to 150 Liters i like to over filter rather than under. I have plants in my tank which are in aquarium pot as i like the fact it can control growth to a point and if i get bored of how my tank looks i can just move them around. And i have my fish and shrimp. Should i just keep going with good water changes and cleaning which i am doing every 4-7 day and cleaning my filter 1 a month or is there something else i should be doing ? I am no pro at keeping fish but I am learning more and more. Ask me about dogs and horses and i could tell you anything lol :)

Wait, if you have live plants you don't want carbon in your filter? Can you explain more, and why? I have the basic Fluval, and usually my water is fairly clear, but food (frozen shrimp and shrimp pellets) makes it cloudy, which can take a while to clear. I added an extra power filter today, but it stirs up all the crap on the bottom making it more cloudy. However, my bigger question is why all my plants turn brown, fade away to skeletons, and don't grow. I don't think I have enough light, but I do have Eco-Complete substrate and even with that I can't get the darn plants to stick in it and root, let alone grow well. I've just started using liquid CO2, which seems to be helping a few plants, but most are still dwindling! I hate how long it's taking to figure this all out... my bottom gets full of junk even within a couple of days of a total clean-out, and I'm only feeding a tiny bit morning and night. :\

Now that I know Eco-Complete substrate has all the nutrients for the plants, I haven't been using liquid fertilizer.  The Fluval filter has a carbon component.. should I take that out?  I am also now adding a bit of liquid CO2 daily.  But, I still don't see it all coming together as a full eco-system yet.  It's driving me mad really... I work at it every few days.  I have a 20G Long, so maybe the space is too small to really decorate it well, but the fact that most of the plants brown and thin down to a skeleton, and they refuse to take root in the substrate is really ticking me off.  Never would have guessed how much maintenance and money goes into keeping an aquarium!  But, it is addicting!  I already have a down payment on a 55G, and am going to look at a 30G someone is selling tonight.  ;)

+greatnationnow it can take a year to dial things in. If you dose ferts you don't want carbon in the tank. It will strip the liquids.

+Joshua Henry How did it not work? Did you test your water before and treat it to get it where it needs to be? I use tap water and have never had a problem, but I always add Tetra AquaSafe to take care of the chlorine, per the instructions on the bottle. I also add PH Down because my tap water PH is a little high. Once you get you water chemistry to where it needs to be occasional testing will help...after awhile you'll know what you need to do.

Is that a yellow Malawi cichlids? I'm glad some people mix different species of different parts of the world in the same fish tank I used to have angelfish, oscars, blue and yellow Malawi cichlids, discus, one arowana, tanganyika frontosa fish, one jack Dempsey, and one Pleco in the same aquarium, they were all in one aquarium and not as aggressive to one another as one would expect, they were really happy and energetic then one day pg&e cut my neighborhood's power off for 12 hours, and when I got home from work all my fish except oscars, Pleco, crayfish, and one yellow cichlid died. The next day they were going to cut it again for some project and I asked for a generator because my remaining fish would die, but they kept transferring from one office back to the other. I ended up with only my Pleco that week. I haven't been able to go back to being obsessed with the fish hobby. Some people don't think a fish matters, but when you watch your fish grow several times their original size, you get attached to them.

MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 9 years ago
Yeah I've always had great water quality in my 75 even more so now with the CO2 the plants take care of everything. However I did just put a internal UV sterilizer in my 40 gal reef tank. Way to much money involved in that tank. It's more for parasite prevention then water clarity. Flow and filtration along with your water changes is enough but having it in my reef puts me a little more at ease
BALCER-EuroR
BALCER-EuroR - 9 years ago
+MASS Aquariums You're absolutely right. If you don't need it, you don't need it. UV is just insurance policy. It can help you keep your fish healthy for a long time, killing all the unwanted, tiny inhabitants of our aquariums (parasites etc). It can kill diatoms in few days almost entirely. I do regular water changes and I do take care of my filter but I decided to go UV anyway and I think it was a right move. Never to much protection :-) And water is even clearer thank it was (it's only visible when I take a look form the side of the tank (4 feet long) Then I can see what's on the other side much clearer)
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 9 years ago
No, but it has been thinned out since this video and as far as UV goes I just don't think you need them if you do regular water changes and take care of your filter.

I set up a fresh water tank with 10 african cichlics.    How does one complete the cycle?
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 9 years ago
What kind of tank have you set up. Planted, African, saltwater? Your nitrites will read 0 when your cycle is complete. That's the only reason why you would have nitrites. After your ammonia spikes, then your nitrite will spike and then you will end up with nitrates. As long as they are 20ppm or below you are all good. Once they go above you do your water change and that's what reduces your nitrates back to normal levels. Buy yourself a test kit and it will save you a drive. I use the API master kit for fresh and Selferite kits for my saltwater. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. Just be patient and your tank will take care of itself. Don't over feed your fish and don't keep your lights on for more than 6-7 hours.

Yeah its still cycling atmoment would it help if i get a friends filter and run on mine for abit?

Lol. Yeah this was awhile ago I was holding them for a buddy. They have since moved to my African all MBUNA tank. Yes it will go away. It's your tank cycling. Ammonia spikes, then nitrite spikes then your nitrates will take over and your water should clear up after the whole nitrogen cycle is complete.

Yes plants help remove nitrates as well as compete the algae out for nutrients which also helps the water clarity. Plants also take in waste from the substate.

Did hear you right in your video.....?? Never use carbon in a planted tank???

Always remove carbon/charcaol when dosing until the course of treatment is finished
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 9 years ago
I never do. Especially if you dose anything. The carbon is for chemical filtration and it strips away anything you dose for the plants. Works for me. Hope it works for you. Keep me posted

Great video and information but also you should tell us that we can get UV sterilizers on Amazon or Ebay way cheaper than the regular standard stores near you, that is how I got mines. I hope one day you become the best marine biologist on earth. God bless brother!

I have a forty gallon tank with large goldfish and I was wondering what could cause them to lay on the bottom of the tank?
Cory LoSapio
Cory LoSapio - 9 years ago
+MASS Aquariums lol i know this was a typo but twat your water had me rolling. would you suggest plants for a 10 gallon? i have a 20 ac filter and currently a bolivian ram, red chromide, panda cory and small upside down cat. was originally using a box filter for crushed coral for the chromide but i don't think its necessary. i just have heard that high pH and plants are hard to balance, any insight?
Jaime Craig
Jaime Craig - 9 years ago
Listing or laying on its side is an indication of nitrite toxicity.
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 9 years ago
Not quite sure. I have no experience with goldfish. Could be internal parasite or a balance problem. Doesn't sound good if they are not active. Try testing your water. May be high ammonia which could cause them to be struggling. Do a water change and clean your gravel really good and twat your water before and after. Let me know how everything comes out

Good nice simple way to keep the aquarium clear. I do not even use a filter in may aquarium only water changes and the right balance of plants and fish.

Shanta Manohar - 9 years ago
Sorry for the delay in reply. I keep the fish to around 30 small size and one or two big fish. Lot of plants and water changes once in fifteen days. It is had but we have to wait till the nitrogen starts. I will attach the picture my aquarium by email

Thanks. Yeah take out any carbon you have in your filter. It takes the chemicals out. Your plants will need those ferts if you are running high lights or CO2

My water is a dirty green color. I do my weekly water changes and i clean my filter. I think it is the gravel I use so I am planning on doing a mass gravel removal. But it that doesn't work then i don't know what to do.

Well, my tank is a ten gallon. It is not planted. The fish I have are Mosquito Fish and one Otocinclus. Oh and my fish recently had seven babies.
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 10 years ago
I would keep doing your water changes and stop cleaning your filter for awhile. You need to let the beneficial bacteria build up to take care of the tank. Couple questions so I can help you: What size is your tank, is it planted, what kind of fish do you keep and what if at all are you dosing in your tank. Give me a quick overview of your tank and we will get this fixed. I have a few tips that should take care if this once you give me some info
