There was not Co2 in this tank. But It would have been easy to. You just use a nano diffuser with a drop checker. I would bet it would be around 1 bubble ever 2-3 seconds.

Jesse Raine Well, its personal preference and depended largely on budget. Like right now, I do have three tanks, the smallest of which is three gallons for my betas. Before you flip out, I'm getting something bigger soon and will be converting that into a temporary holding tank for guppies that I'll be feeding to my future pet garter snake.

Is it possible to achieve a similar acquascaping without all this soil and fertilizers boosters?
Roger Nevez
Roger Nevez - 7 years ago
+jjsinner My guess is that the filter transforms ammonia and nitrites so fast in nitrates that plants doesn't have enough time to consume them. Therefore, plants would only have enough time to consume nitrates.
jjsinner
jjsinner - 7 years ago
Roger Nevez I believe so. I'm not sure if plants take any benefit from ammonia but an established tank shouldn't have ammonia present in the first place. Nitrates are a byproduct from the nurifying bacteria that consume ammonia before it builds up.
Roger Nevez
Roger Nevez - 7 years ago
+jjsinner Plants can only absorb nitrites and nitrates? They can not absorb ammonia directly?
jjsinner
jjsinner - 7 years ago
Plants also benefit from the nitrogen cycle. Once the aquarium is established live plants absorb nitrites/nitrates and convert them into fertilizers :)
Roger Nevez
Roger Nevez - 7 years ago
+Christopher > "[...] see if there is anything similar to sand."
Cotton????
Sand is an inert substrate (almost no nutrients). So, the roots would be basically absorbing the nutrients from the water.
Therefore, cotton might be enough substrate?
Christopher
Christopher - 7 years ago
Roger Nevez I'd give it a try with something more fine than gravel. try out some sand or see if there is anything similar to sand. give the roots something to dig in to.
Roger Nevez
Roger Nevez - 7 years ago
+Christopher > "I'm no expert when it comes to aquascaping."
But you have already aquascaping with only good lighting and enough substrate? Correct?

> "[...] enough substrate for the plants to root in [...]"
Do you think only gravel might be enough?
Christopher
Christopher - 7 years ago
Roger Nevez Yes, they get nutrients through the roots. As far as ammonia goes I'm not sure how to answer that part 100% correctly. I'm no expert when it comes to aquascaping.
Roger Nevez
Roger Nevez - 7 years ago
+Christopher > "[...] enough substrate for the plants to root in [...]"
This means that most of the nutrients in aquatic plants come from the roots instead of the leaves? Correct?

> "The fishes are almost like a source of fertilizer [...]"
Considering that most of the fish waste is ammonia, this means that aquatic plants needs basically ammonia to survive?
Christopher
Christopher - 7 years ago
Roger Nevez I think just as long as you have good lighting and enough substrate for the plants to root in, it will be just fine. The fishes are almost like a source of fertilizer so with their waste it provides nutrients for the plants as well. Just make sure the plants pretty much get the light they need.
Roger Nevez

I think 3 gallons is a bare minimum, heated and filtered while being well kept. And thats for people who know what they're doing, as in experienced fish keepers who know how to keep water chemistry pretty well in balance. I'd shoot for 5-10 gallons if you're new.

Jhendka P. I would't put my betta in a 3 gallon. I know a lot of people do and sure they can survive in such a small space, but as with any living creature bigger is better.
My betta is in an 8gal (40litre) and most betta keepers recommend a minimum of 5gal. I guess it depends on personal preference and budget really.

butts
butts - 7 years ago
you want to use a water conditioner which will take out the chlorine in the water. then you want to kick start the bacteria by giving it ammonia some how. you can use fish food and just put it in there to rot, or some people use a "hardy" fish but thats kinda messed up
Pieter Odendaal
Pieter Odendaal - 7 years ago
butts I don't have a established fish tank. how do you treat water that is going to go into the new tank ( without fish or any living stuff except plants) is tap water fine?
and can you then filter it as it is for like 2weeks before introducing your fish/shrimps and snails?
Luculencia
Luculencia - 7 years ago
You do if you're moving fish from the tank - moving their water with them helps to keep all the parameters (GH, kH, pH, NO3 etc) the same and reduces shock, also means you don't have to spend as long acclimating them.

If you take all the water for the new tank from the old one you don't even have to acclimate the fish from the old tank, you can just dump them straight in to the new one (provided temperatures match).

I always do that when moving fish as I hate having buckets of stressed fish (especially with my cats around) waiting for drip acclimation and would rather just move them instantly to their new tank.
Joe Steadman

Adeline Dering
Adeline Dering - 6 years ago
Okay first off I have kept Betta's in tanks up to 15 gallons. They all did great. In a 3 gallon tank it is fine for a betta. Saying that you wouldn't put a dog or whale in those conditions is unfair. Completely different species. And if you want to compare animals, than you saying a betta live in rice fields is like saying you should buy a mountain range for a dog. They are domesticated animals. Second of, the commenter meant paradise by it is heavily planted. Not everyone who buys a small tank is doing because it's the bare minimum. They give it care and attention, sometimes more than a big tank. Will a betta be happy in a big tank. YES. Will it be "sad" in a small tank? NO! You treat a betta fish like it has the intelligence of a dolphin. Like it's feeling will get hurt if it's put in a small tank. Bottom line, a betta would do FINE in this tank.

Brianna Harter (You must admit though that bigger IS always better though.) Y'all have been blowing up my phone and im curious where you're getting your info? Not that I really doubt you but I've never been able to come across much abt betta's natural habitat/life beyond the basics + they were bred to be more aggressive in captivity.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
I never said bettas live in 2.5 gallons in the wild.I said 2.5 gallons is enough to give them the space they need to preform their natural behaviors and not poison them selves with their own waste in other words it's the minimum tank size.

everything I've said has come from professional breeders, biologist who study bettas and people who live where bettas live.everything you've written hasn't been from opinions not facts.it's pretty easy to tell your information is false cause you've never stated anything that disproves what I have said instead just stating information without anything to back it up like information about their habitat.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 6 years ago
I've already told you why it's untrue. All you're doing is repeating the nonsense retailers tell you that has no basis in reality. You seem to think a betta spends its whole life in 2.5 gallons of water, which is total nonsense. You're the kind of person who thinks that a betta in 2.5 gallons is just as content as a betta in the wild. It's sad because what you're saying is even worse than what other people like you say; most retailers actually say 5 gallons is what a betta needs to be happy (which is also nonsense, but twice as better as what you say). You're the kind of person who thinks a whale can live perfectly happy in a pool or a bear at a zoo. Sure they can LIVE in that kind of space, but my point is the more space the better, and that is what all professional betta keepers and biologists say. Keep living by the Walmart manual for good fish health.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
how is it unturn?

everything you've said so far are lies based on romanticized version of the wild.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 6 years ago
That's just verifiably untrue.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
I wasn't changing the subject I was talking to someone else.

bettas do spend their entire lives in their territory.there's no reason to search all over the place for food cause they eat insect larvae which there is a abundances of every where they live.the whole reason they have territory is to mate.wild bettas can't afford to go exploring cause death is around every corner in the wild and they don't want to loss their territory.

they also don't live 5 to 10 years in the wild.the average life span of a wild betta is one year cause during the dry season most die leaving only the fry the carry on.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 6 years ago
You are delusional. My tanks are properly cycled and run just fine. Nice job trying to change the subject. A 2.5 gallon tank is not fine for any sized fish, much less a betta. Wild bettas do not spend their whole lives in just 2.5 gallons of water. They do have territory, but they also leave to feed, explore, and mate. They don't just sit there for 5-10 years in the same spot.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
bettas really don't produce that much waste and if they are producing enough waste to make it to where there is a extremely high level of ammonia in a 2.5 gallon you've got bigger issues like over feeding or your tank isn't properly cycled.

bigger is better but that doesn't mean it is cruel to keep a animal in the minimum.
drainedrain864
drainedrain864 - 6 years ago
Brianna Harter even if they do not swim so much the ammonia in the tank will build up quickly bigger is better for aquariums
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
they don't swim several kilometres a day.

they spend their entire lives in a small territory if they dare to even travel a few feet outside their territory in the wild they risk losing their territory, running into another betta and getting into a fight or worse running into a predator.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 6 years ago
I'm not treating it according to my personal feelings. If you think wild bettas spend most of their lives0 in an area amounting to 2.5 gallons of water, you're sorely mistaken. Bettas swim sometimes the equivalent of several kilometres a day in the wild. A whale doesn't need the whole ocean to swim in, either, but that doesn't mean it's okay to keep it in a tank. Use your brain.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
they don't need that much space cause they are a animal that claims a territory and sticks to a small area.

trying to compare a betta to a dog, cat, bird or human doesn't work cause their needs and behavior is nothing like those animals.when dealing with a animal you should owes treat it according to it's needs not your own personal feelings.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 6 years ago
Are you kidding me? You think a betta can live its life in 2.5 gallons? Yeah, you can put a bird in a cage and a cat in a cage and a person in 50 square ft apartment and they'll "live." You can have a dog in an apartment with no yard and walk it every night, but that's no life. The more room the better, and the same goes for a betta.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 6 years ago
minimum for a betta is 2.5 gallons.

this size allows the water to be clean and allows the betta to feel like it has a small territory(just cause there's miles of rice patty or stream doesn't mean they use it all).
lycoris
lycoris - 6 years ago
Alexander Borges okay no, that fish is going to be absolutely miserable in just 2 quarts, and the tank is so god damn small the risk of bacteria buildup is so fucking high. dyou really think someone who thinks that is an acceptable size is going to clean it properly?
Alexander Borges
Alexander Borges - 6 years ago
I'm sure they would like a swimming pool. their content and 2 quarts of water half a gallon and they'll be fine as a matter of fact they'll be fit as a fiddle and I have had some that live very long lives.
CptSchmidt
CptSchmidt - 7 years ago
It's a myth that bettas "like" tiny spaces. This myth is peddled by disohnest salespeople who want to sell a pretty fish to anyone. Bettas like shallow water, but not three gallons. The absolute minimum for a betta to be content is 5 gallons, and even that's too little. Far from a "paradise," anyway. The betta's natural habitat is in rice fields, which often cover several acres and are about half a meter deep. No fish is in "paradise" in 3 gallons. The more room the better.

What if u don't have water from established tank
jashelps
jashelps - 7 years ago
+Spencer Douglas You just wait 2 weeks before putting fish in a tank. That is the general rule. Also water from an already established tank has almost no benefits. If you really want to startup a tank quick you take some filtermedia from an already running tank and put it in the new tank. This allows it to cycle much quicker and you might be able to put fish in it after a week.

Brandon Matsumoto
Brandon Matsumoto - 8 years ago
+Sean Williams Okay ty will check it out, however I found an amazing lfs in my area and bought a macro glo refugium light instead
Sean Williams
Sean Williams - 8 years ago
+Brandon Matsumoto Thats too much light, unless youre going high tech. Ive found hightech small tanks to be a pain. This little Finnex clip on light was perfect, it grew a medium light plant like glosso perfectly. I never had any issues with algae at all with this tank. I neglected the heck out of this tank, I only ever topped it off, rarely did water changes, like once ever couple months. Its better to have lower light and run it longer than have a super bright light and give yourself all kinds of headaches. hop onto plantedtank.net and they will help a ton.
Brandon Matsumoto
Brandon Matsumoto - 8 years ago
First off that was a fast response, second I'm thinking about getting the finnex fugeray for my fluval spec 3 2.5 gal, do you think that would be okay as it would go over the filter box a bit?
Sean Williams

Love the tank.  I do have one question, though.  Why do you complete the fill with water from an established tank?
PatitoFeo4361
PatitoFeo4361 - 9 years ago
I can understand using established filter media, but what does the water from an established tank add to the cycling time table. The way I understand it is that an established water column doesn't contain anything of greater value than conditioned new tap water and could even contain harmful elements such as an overabundance of nitrates. phosphates, or pathogens that could negatively affect the tank.  Am I mistaken?  Oh, and thanks for the quick reply. I am really trying to figure out this planted tank thing.  My fish aren't plant friendly, so I have no experience in the planted arena.  Thanks again.
Sean Williams
Sean Williams - 9 years ago
I was running the filter I put on this tank on my 20 gallon tank for a few weeks, So the filter was cycled and I put water from a cycled, established aquarium, so I instantly cycled this tank. You still want to give it about a week for things to balance out in the tank before you put fish in it. In theory however, I could have put fish and shrimp in this tank on day one. Thanks for watching!
