You could have used the silicone to glue he wooden mount to the plastic container and not had to drill holes and use metal screws. once you put silicone on the back of that wood and stick it to the plastic that aint coming loose ever.

I am an Engineer and I can tell you that the design of the filter has an error.
Error is- the intake is already has a filter mesh (whatever) thus it will not clean the waste materials as the filter mesh on the intake will stop it from getting in.

Remedy- Use filter mesh of bigger gaps on the intake, and use narrow gap filter inside the filtration tank before it goes into the pump(or else the pump will get clogged).
And also dont hang the filter on the aquarium, as it may crack the glass due to its weight and constant vibration. you can clamp the filter on haters :p
By the way I respect your efforts.

thanks for reading.

Austin Shameju
Austin Shameju - 8 years ago
Does it really works???
mef1975
mef1975 - 8 years ago
+Austin Shameju Absolutely, most certainly! I made a sort of air pump "sponge filter" with a garlic powder bottle that I stuffed with lava rocks. Poked many little holes in the bottom and top of the bottle for the water to flow thru. Poked a hole near the bottom for the air hose's input to direct the flow up the bottle. The bottle is placed right on top of some gravel, which also acts as the home for beneficial bacterial colonies. Yeah, it's hard to believe that it worked, but I kept a 6 year old angelfish, with a body the size of the palm of my hand, in a 10 gallon tank (with no plants and very little gravel, just mainly under the bottle), and the ammonia was processed very efficiently. Spent a month doing 50% water changes twice a week because of all the nitrates. The fish did very well. The purpose of this experiment was to figure out how much nitrates such a fish produced. I think I even managed to figure how much 10% ammonia per day equates to such a fish, so as to never have to put the fish thru such an experiment again, I can simulate it being there, just by using 10% ammonia, without surfactant and additives. I think it was 1.5cc per day, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering that part correctly. I play with little fish now, and mostly plants.

This is going to be costly in parts and materials, i would think the point of DIY is to save money. that's not going to happen with something like this. Not only that but what about replacing the filtration in a few months, what then, dump them in the trash and get more balls? That begs the question, if all we are using is bio balls then couldn't you just fill up any old Whisper machine with bioballs instead, if you didn't want to spend money on filters. i would be curious to see what you come up with pricing out the parts list.

I'm with the guy that posted "or you can spend 20 bucks and wait until it arrives :D" yup, sounds about right Aaron.

+Peter McLeod I sort of think the same. Unless you have a very specific reason such as limited/odd space to put the filter?

I get the DIY aspect of a canister filter, since you can actually save 50% or more of the cost of a canister filter by doing it yourself. But HOBs aren't all that expensive, and to make it yourself isn't saving a great deal of money for the time, effort, and potential problems. My 2c.

I made a prototype of this filter.
My problem is when I switch off the power head, filter was starting to siphon the water out from the filter to tank.
yes its not a problem because filter is carrying small amount of water. But when after it happened I had to prime the filter again. what is reason behind this?

What would you estimate this filters max aquarium size to be? I have a young turtle in a 40-50 gallon tank, and I really need to do an upgrade to his filtration system. I'd like to have a filter that would be able to handle up to a 70 or 80gallon, since the bioload of turtles is much higher than fish. Plus I'll be adding feeder fish and/or snails at certain times.

what about the poop of the fish and turtles ? it won't be able to get inside the filter because of that pink filter padding ! it will only work for water not the poop , it will stay there forever !

+Sylvia Go I'd just say, make sure you have as big of a tank as you can afford and house, (better to go big and not have to upgrade later on, then have to do an upgrade every couple of years) My old associates had a general rule of thumb that says for every inch of shell, there should be 10 gallons, with a minimum of 30-50 gallons for even a young one. Also, as much filtration as you can get. Something like this is a great start, but I've been thinking about getting a new 5 gallon bucket that is rated food safe, and turning it into a filter, kinda like this only bigger. The more bio-media you have, the better! Also make sure you have a basking platform with a UVB light. I recommend the reptisun 5.0 CFL type. The tube florescent version is good too, but I think its range is lower than the cfls, so maybe the 10.0 if you have to use the tube instead.

TurtleDudeProd
TurtleDudeProd - 9 years ago
+shubham sharma That isn't so much of an issue. With a good filter setup (Meaning a strong biological filtration setup) the debris and such is not so much an issue. You can just let it break down naturally in the water. The biological filtration will take care of the chemical breakdown (Ammonia, Nitrites) eventually becoming nitrates, which you keep in check with 20-25% partial water changes once a week or so. Aquarium plants will also help as well. Especially if you have turtles, you should keep the tank stocked with plants such as anacharis and duckweed, ect. Its great food for them, and will help with water quality. Of course, the quality of water is dependent on having the proper amount of water for the inhabitant (for a turtle, its recommended to have a minimum of 10gal per inch of shell) combined with a good biological filtration rig.

i actually make a filter that clean the poop and extra food as well, because if not removed within some time it will degrade the water as well so....i dont have to remove the poop "specially" i just have to change the water... and the water looks crystal clear... trust me !!

Why would you want the poop inside the filter? You're supposed to remove the poop during a water change by siphoning it up.
Rukshantha Janaka
Rukshantha Janaka - 9 years ago
Good idea but  IF you make
Smaller HOLES for the pipe IN the tank would I still have to cover it ? the purpose of cleaning is to suck the dirt and bring them to the the sump clean it and releasing it to the the tank is it???  just asking??  Thank you.
TurtleDudeProd
TurtleDudeProd - 9 years ago
+Rukshantha Janaka No, its not. The purpose of the filter is to remove the chemical breakdown of waste. (IE ammonia) the dirt and debris can be left to break down naturally, or siphoned out during partial water changes. Google "nitrification cycle" to learn more about the purpose of biological filtration.

Interesting, to be helpful to all those who are interstellar in this build I am seeing two long term problems.
1. Using wood as a holder is a bad idea. He notes not to touch the water but stained/treated wood could potentially leak harmful to toxins into the aquarium just be coming in contact with moisture.
2. Those screws have a lot of pressure on the and over time might Crack the plastic. Would suggest additional screws with washers. Also you would want to silicone the inside and outside for additional protection.

thanks for your post.

Completely awesome but I am smelling problems to find certain parts. My question is what exactly can use and recycle animal waste in aquarium? I am thinking plants but I think it's some other organisms.

man, it might be very cheap to build. You really need a pump (which is fairly cheap), bio media (can be cheap as well), and the PVC pipes. I can say that instead of PVC pipes you could use a garden hose, and instead of a drill you could use a sharp knife. Pump- well, they sell some very cheap ones in China and other Asian countries. Ok I really shouldn't say that but I will (didn't want to advertise)- check ebay, there are tonnes of cheap stuff there. Be crative, good luck and take care :)

Thanks for that I was at the nursery today and saw some elements that looked similar. It makes me think about it and I think its about the same or more costly to manually build. Its awesome to understand though.

Most of the parts seen in the video can be bought online, look them up on google.

Various kinds of bacteria (nitryfying bacteria for example, and other types) which live on the bio media inside of the filter and on the filter padding. Also on every possible surface inside of the aquarium, including plants.

Why do you use a sponge to block the holes on the intake pvc?  Doesn't the sponge block the fish droppings and other dirty things from being cleaned from the water?  I am a new aquarium user, so I don't understand this.
Robert Witke
Robert Witke - 9 years ago
+Robert Witke any debris that gets caught up in the sponge also keeps the inside of the filter clean so it can perform better.
Robert Witke
Robert Witke - 9 years ago
It keeps the fish from getting pulled up against the pipe from the suction and killed. Instead of using a sponge you could also route the pvc down one of those plastic tubes used for air bubblers.

I liked this a lot, but I don't usually have time for making my own things as much fun as it'd be. However, I am thinking that with all that space in the plastic container, I figure for the purpose of the video, you kept the media simple as where it looks like you could have gone to town and put a sponge at the bottom, then some charcoal, then some ammonia remover, then some of this n that, THEN the bio balls/rings.  I'm running an Aqueon 10 in my 6 gallon tank but am considering either an Api superclean or a Fluval C3, both featuring bio-rings.. but I figure I don't really NEED a new filter but I just love how the Fluval C3 looks and it's a five stage. Call it overkill, but I want a crystal clear tank.. The Aqueon seems to be doing fine, but I like experimenting  =-)

this is cool i think i'm going to try this but change it when the water going in gets pumped to the bottom of the plastic box and put a layer of sponge for it to filter through again. I'ld like to make a large enough on to somehow put my heater in there as well. this way i don't have to see it in the main tank. it would be an interesting project. thank you for the great ideas!

Hopefully you reply. What's the benefit of having the pump inside the canister rather than outside, like in the tank?
Gary Heard
Gary Heard - 9 years ago
+Valentin Rodriguez A friend of mine told me her water pump inside the tank overheated and when she came home from work, all her fish were dead and the water turned black. I'm sure it is probably rare, but still it can happen. She gave up on having a fish tank. And on a second thought, a water pump can still jam and overheat, even in an outside filter system.

+dablocishot77 Exactly  sometimes diy isnt about saving money, just having fun and being creative is the whole point.

+DIY AQUAPROS I was wondering the point to this with all the parts used and the time spent. But I guess if you look at it in this way, it would be nice to have a working tank with parts that you built on your own.
AQUAPROS
AQUAPROS - 10 years ago
You're totally right, this wasn't a money saving project at all. The point of it was really just to be a creative project and it may be nice for someone who wants a giant HOB but doesn't want to spend 40 bucks.

Instead of buying a power head and all that other stuff, just buy a hob filter. Way cheaper. Creative though

It would be tough to achieve the same flow rate using air, but using your imagination and going though trial and error is what DIY is all about!

Yeah. Really. A power filter is probably only a few dollars more, at least for what this thing could filter.

Why waste your time on building this when you can just throw a HOB power filter on ur tank?

Because it's strong as hell, causes major current, and can kill any fish that swims to close
