If you have a small tank, you can use this one. This one has an air hose outside the rising tube, allowing more room for water flow in the rising tube.

is that soil or small Pebble gravel you're using?

I remember, as a kid, I set up my aquarium in the most careless way possible. Although the filters I've used weren't exactly clean as I've reused them from my other aquariums back then, I didn't do any water cycling or even temperature checks. Living in a fairly hot and humid tropical country, my RCS managed to still make babies like rats. I had a carpet of java moss, though!

how do you tweak the TDS? My tap is 230ppm. The only way i can go lower is to use RO water.

Alright I will keep this one short. I would love to try shrimp keeping along side my main tank. It would be simply a small 2.5-gallon tank to keep on my desk. I would use artificial plants and simple aquarium gravel. I would first cycle it with Neon Tetras and then introduce shrimp when I have a fully nitrogen cycled tank as I am aware they are delicate. I would not use live plants. Would this setup work?? and how often would it need cleaning??

Oh dont forget a heater! Neocardinia prefer warmer temperatures than Cardinia, but I have seen some cheap ones at petsmart that are reliable for like $10-15. Also you mentioned simple aquarium gravel, but that's generally too difficult for shrimp to turn over with their claws looking for food. Using sand is much better since the grains are so small. Your local hardware store probably has silica sand for like 5 dollars for 50lbs like it was near me. Thats super cheap compared to petsmart/petco charging $20 for a 10 pound bag of "aquarium sand" or whatever....

Yen Xion Using live plants would be 10 times better in a small aquarium, and using plants like anubias or moss are low maintenance. This way it cuts down on your cleaning of their waste as well as helps filter your water. I would run a small submersible filter, or maybe just an air stone and letting the plants filter. It's preferred to have one or the other in order to create some circulation. I would do maybe one water change a week. In my small tank i use a piece of airline hose like a siphon to clean up excess waste. Whatever water i take out from cleaning I replace and this is my water change. Other than that it would work. I would not keep crystals or any other strain of Taiwan bees in this setup because they're super finicky. Using cherries or any other Neocardinia like rilis is much safer for you and your wallet =]

With under gavels how do you stop them building up nitrates?
Alvin Chan
Alvin Chan - 8 years ago
Nitrate are the by products of ammonia, best way of removing them will be water change and floating plants for shrimp tanks.. So we do frequent weekly water changes is to reduce it, and by adding beneficial bacteria after each water changes replenishes the loss in bacteria, after which we tweak the TDS (minerals) back to the level which we loss due to water change

Beautiful tank, would you mind sharing where you picked up your UGF and lighting fixture? Can't wait to see more videos of the tanks you have set up in the background.

Alvin,
Great video.  Is this the commonly available 7.5 gallon (12x12x12) aquarium?
I want to purchase one of these tanks soon and have looked everywhere on line for UGF's.  Where did you find yours??

under ground filters use to be the filter of chose back in the 70 and 80s even for keeping saltwater tanks , but they are still better then sponge filters and for raising babies fish flys
jessumano al
jessumano al - 8 years ago
+junito1957 yup, really miss this type of set up, but with the advent of the planted aquarium, these filters have fallen out of favor because it seems the stems plants don't do well in UG system. i have asked a pet shop in my city and they told me they no longer carry undergravel filter systems.
