Tom Burton's Pond

Tom Burton has been a mentor for me after I built my first pond. I met him at a Mid Atlantic Koi Club Meeting and he taught me everything he knows about koi ponds ince then. When you walk into his garden, you feel like you are visiting another country, Japan. He has created his own "Japanese Garden" right in his own backyard. Beautiful Pond ... seeing this can melt your stress away ... love it ... I have a Beautiful Koi That I purchased from a fish store when he or she was only 3 inches long ... This Beautiful Koi is now about 18 inches long and lives in a 75 Gal. aquarium with large Goldfish ... He is going to out growing this aquarium soon ... I will need something larger for him ...

that is awesome but why didn't you go 3 feet. do some of the fish come close to hitting bottom.second you should have shown what you use for your filtration.

Your fish are barely living, not enjoying as they need at least 4 to 6 feet deep ponds. Our pond is 2 feet, 4 feet and in some areas 6 feet deep, thats what keeps them happy. They need to swim vertically as well as horizontally.

"omaiga ze musik iz chainiz" Well, the japanese were the ones to borrow the whole concept of zen gardens from China during the Asuka period. Or are you wildly offended because you thought they invented it? Not to mention that this one is located in New Jersey, so why aren't they playing songs from Kool & The Gang in the background? I swear you guys...

It is disappointing to hear the Chinese instrumental as the background music in this video. There is no relationship visually or culturally in this video to link this with Chinese music. This fish pond,  garden decoration is unmistakably Japanese Just make me feel uncomfortable to notice the music.

I have little to no pond smarts... 15 years ago I was gifted a rigid pond liner (120g) and I drug that liner around for the next 3 years hoping I could use it. My friends thought I was a nut for keeping it but it seems to have paid off! I put it in the ground over a decade ago and it seems fine. I have comet goldfish in it and zero filtration. the pond has a water change 20% every month or so (just tap water with conditioner) but it isn't the koi mecca I want. the goldfish grow to about 7 inches and then are eaten by our local racoons! I can't make the investment of true koi for fear they will b eaten as well. help if u can man! I live in Southern California ...TY!

this is one of the beautifulest and nicest garden i have ever seen before. i love your video - an i agree with you completly. one of the important things of an real koi hobbyst should be a microskope. it is not very difficult, to use an microskope - but it helps so much to keep koi alive!

With Koys All you do is let them feed quite a bit more than what you usually do right before winter and then during winter do not feed them at all because they need heat to be a will to digest their food and just place A few small heaters and a few floating balls to keep some of the water unfrozen

I am so impressed with this design.  I am so hooked on these interesting fish. I live in Jersey and started collecting in 2012. I would like to learn so much more. I've tried to find people or clubs nearby that are dedicated to these jewels.  I have two ponds, 7,000 gallon and a smaller 300 gallon.  Hopefully this summer I will be adding another 1,000 gallon pond.  Where in Jersey are you located?  Thank you for taking the time to give advice.  I'm sure it has helped save many koi.

Don't even need a heater. As long as you a have a air stone on a good pump to move the water when it breaks the surface. . Water that is moving will not freeze. .

Koi and goldfish's hometown is China, Chinese people develop the koi and goldfish in the song dynasty in 900 years ago, all the Japanese and Korean traditional culture, including traditional architecture, traditional medicine, clothes, food, and tools including the samurai sword, all was the invention of the Chinese people, they learned from tang dynasty and song dynasty of China, katana was a copy of tang dynasty sword!

In my backyard we have a wood, and a tiny trickle of a stream it's a tributary that leads directly into a swamp, and later into a local canal. I was thinking of perhaps changing it up and putting in a waterfall and koi pond between where it streams in and where it streams out, with a self-sustained solar pump. I was reading about naturally drawing nitrogenated water up to garden beds 5 stories above this little area which I would love to do.

Also, one last question How do you get ready for winter ? Do you bring your fish in ? 18 inches don't freeze ? Do you use deicers or do you keep the constant move of the streams ? It's so hard to figure out what to do in case of power outage (you must have a generator). Anyway really this is a wonderful job

@danialglover By that I mean, I'm American, but I don't find any fish nearly as beautiful as Koi, that would look nice in my pond. Bluegill and Minnow are great, but I wouldn't choose them over Koi any day of the week. I don't care what part of the world the fish came from, as long as they look great.
