Hey Joey, just an idea, how would the panels for the wavemakers fit on the front 2 corners of the tank?, not sure how well you could hide the cords, maybe those square panel things electricians use to hide/cover wires and such , but it would give a clean finish for the back of the tank with a nice wooden trim around the top of the tank, might be an option for the lid too?

Hey Joey, are the powered sections of those power heads waterproofed. I know that they are going to be behind the acrylic and sealed, but I am worried about leaks over time.. Idk if that pump in the tank idea is best idea Joey. Just sounds like something that could fail. I would just drill some new holes where u want the pumps and use pumps outside the tank. Just to be extra safe because if those baffles leak and fill up you might have an electric shock to the water.
The king of DIY
The king of DIY - 6 years ago
+Joshua Perry Climber its the exact same thing as how the viewing panels are installed, yet entirely safer due to the far less surface area of the chambers. I understand a few concerns but they really boggle my mind in terms of reasoning. If you are worried about those baffles, you should be losing your mind over the panels. Again, identical situation yet the baffles are far smaller meaning the tension on them is extremely low compared to the long 8 foot panel.
Joshua Perry Climber
Joshua Perry Climber - 6 years ago
Or maybe you can make some kind of the hang on the back pump that will blow water and you move it in any direction you want. Hope this made sense

Jeffrey Toole
Jeffrey Toole - 6 years ago
You probably already know this but you will need a sump pump of some sort behind the corner WaveMaker panels in the large aquarium. You will probably get it to seal up well but even a small slow leak will expose the electricals to water. It won't take much of a pump but you will need to diy a float switch.
Jeffrey Toole
Jeffrey Toole - 6 years ago
Take it from an engineer: The pressure is a function of water depth. While it is true the total force applied to the wall joints will be less that of the windows, the force at the joint will be much less due to the much smaller area of the panel. Conversely, the area of the joints are also much smaller. A 3/4" thick panel cut on a 45 degree angle produces a joint width of 1.05". (Full calculations would have to be done but it is possible that the pressure at those joints near the floor when full will actually be higher than that of the viewport joints) At the bottom, where the pressure is greatest, there is nothing for the panel to press against, meaning a seal is produced by the silicone alone. Add to these factors the fact that the construction will age - different materials will expand/contract at different rates, materials will degrade over time, mechanical and other vibrations and movements will take their toll. This aquarium will do like every other and eventually leak. Where the main viewports will produce an annoying puddle when a leak starts, these corner wells are going to collect water. Quietly, insidiously, and likely unnoticably collecting water that will put the currently planned electrical equipment in jeopardy (as well as any added later). It is a matter of cheap insurance. No one wants to see another tragedy - or even a close call. Just looking out for you, Joey! :)
The king of DIY
The king of DIY - 6 years ago
+Jeffrey Toole why do you feel this will leak but the front panels will not? They are installed the exact same way yet far less tension is placed on the chambers due to lack of surface area and thickness of materials.

I am SUPER interested in seeing the drip emitter on your water heater in action. I have 6 tanks at 270 gallons in my garage. It doesn't freeze where I'm at and I don't need a heater for my fancy goldfish (only the fry grow out in the winter/spring). But I don't have a drain or a inside water source in the garage. But I could cut into the water line feeding my water heater to do the pressure valve drip emitter automated water changing. I'd also have to learn how to drill my tanks I think. The pvc pipe is touchy with being primed.

Looks awesome! You may want to consider lowering the pressure relief valve on the hot water tank so that it is closer to the floor. Typically this is required by plumbing code to prevent a scalding event should the valve open with someone present - or more likely when a curious hand reaches up while looking directly into the outlet of that scalding water. Better to spend a few bucks than have a kid scalded in the face. Looks awesome though!

im so proud to have watched you go from small diy's to building your dream gallery!

BTW I don't even own fish! (because I'm disabled the physical energy and £ cost is just to high to start) but I follow you dreaming of what I would do...

You give me so much inspiration, not just on fish but on LIFE, your video talking about how much you sacrificed to create the king of diy channel really, really did touch me because I'm trying to set up a yt page doing reviews of what its like getting out and about in a wheelchair. EVERYONE thinks I'm insane because I invested EVERYTHING I have in the start up because I know that we don't encourage disabled people enough!

The thing I hated most about becoming disabled is the extremely low expectations people have of me now and the patronising tone people talk to me with! I want to show that just because I have ms and my arms and legs are weak...doesn't mean my mind has weakened!

I want to show that even abled people can't do everything, so stop bitching and focusing on what we can't do and CELEBRATE WHAT WE CAN DO REGARDLESS OF WHAT THAT IS!

I love what you are doing for the hobby! I have been following you for a year now and have learned so much as far as DIY. Once you get your planted tank going, let me know if you would like any of my plants to help you get started. Take a look now and let me know if you like any, I can start to grow more of them for you. I will send and ship for free. As long as I can ship the plants that you like to Canada.... I don't have a channel per say, it's more of a journal for fellow hobbyist. The forums that I belong to have been declining slowly over the past few years but I am hoping that spreading your channel around will bring the hobby back again. You rock!

Drop a couple aquarium heaters in with the driftwood on their hottest setting. That should allow the release of tannin at higher temps than your aquarium water will be at, so in theory they wouldn't leak out as much in the lower temp aquarium water.

To leach tannins out of v. large driftwood fast you could use a 300 gallon metal stock tank for farming ($250) and wrap the outside in black plastic. If you wanted to go crazy you could hook the stock tank up to a recirculating system via coils of garden hose baking in the sun (e.g. roof of building) and a small/medium size pump. That would get that wood leached out pronto.

You could start a small fire close to the drift wood pond to heat up the water to almost boiling. If the fire is far enough away you should be able to make the water extremely hot without melting the tarp. Ive seen videos of how to boil water in plastic bottles, this would be along the same lines.

Happy fathers day. How feasible would it be to get some square aluminium pipe tubing that are just big enough for the magnetic bases. Coat the tube in the same white epoxy as the tank and it would blend right in. With a flat "J" hook that's painted the same black as the outside of the tank, the mount would blend into the outside and be incognito. This would provide you with the ability to move the power heads around very easily to adjust circulation if you ever need to. You could even make the neck of the J holding the tubing able to rotate in place and then you would be able to infinitely adjust the angle. Hope that made sense

since you have the corner panel which have a dry area in back; have you considered putting in a video cam in the corner panel. You could eventually put the cam(s) on-line to have live-cam.

David Prins since the camera wouldn't need to be inside the tank, almost any mounting option would work. he could use a 90° bracket and glue/epoxy/suction a mount to the dry side of the Plexi panel for example
David Prins

JOey said he can peel the frost coating off so I'm guessing it is like contact paper. No reason a hole could not be cut into the contact paper for the webcam lens to pear through. Just how would such a camera be mounted? I've never seen magnetic mounts.
Helge Brekke
Helge Brekke - 6 years ago
He could cut a small circular hole for a webcam in the frosting.

Helge Brekke
Helge Brekke - 6 years ago
He's calling them wavemakers from time to time, but I'm guessing that's just an optional setting in addition to regular waterflow. Loving the idea of underwater lighting!

I've been watching you for a long time even before I had fish and I used your videos to make my own planted tank with an dwarf aquatic frog 2 guppies and a julii Corey one of my guppies just had babies and I'm super excited so just so you know your awesome and your videos helped me out and I really love this hobby so thanks keep up the good work

I know what it is when your first aquarium is set up, your sure that you have the pretiest aquarium in the world (maybe not that graet as Joey's, but not that much les.) keep up the good work and I hope you will do some expensians.
Phillip LaRocque
Phillip LaRocque - 6 years ago
Arthur Kooy thanks man ya still kinda new and both guppies are female so one came pregnant planning on moving the babies to some friends and I'll take a look at some more corys thanks
Arthur Kooy
Arthur Kooy - 6 years ago
+Phillip LaRocque you need to koop Corydoras at least in schools of 5 and gupies will do beter with 1 male on 2 female or more. Also it's not a good idea to breed gupies in that small guantity because than you can get some inbreed problems.

P.S Sorry for the critical but I only want the best for you and your fish.
