Just a suggestion Joey, although I live all the way in Malaysia, would love to see if you could pass some of you extra fishes once you selected what you want to your viewers who are close by. I'm sure it would make the whole community a bit tighter. All about giving back. Since a lot of them probably chipped in on that Aquarium Gallery project. Just a thought would mean the world to them.

The king of DIY hey Joey just a quick question. How do you feel about guppy tanks and betta sororities. Not trying to ruin any tank plans but I have never really heard you mention either. That's the tank I am currently setting up, bettas, guppies, cardinal tetras, and otocinclits(spell check lol) and an emperor pelco in a planted tank. Would be awesome to hear your thoughts!

I hate it when people troll mostly because this is a gray hobby, not black and white. However I am very passionate about angelfish as I have had a tank or more of them for the past 15 years. First I will say thank you for this whole journey, a year ago I moved and took down my last tanks and have almost forgotten the hobby, when preparing to move into this house I was excited about finally having a concrete floor to go with larger tanks, but the lack of maintenance was very welcome. The past few month's I have been debating a 600g+ plywood tank in my soon to be finished basement with the main requirement of being able to turn a valve to drain, another to fill. Now to the angelfish, I think that 12-18 is rather high. I will say that all of my stock was young each time but I found it difficult to cull them, the sexiest one will pair with the ugliest one and in the end you have 2 alpha pairs with a 3rd sub pair and a few tag along's. The entire dynamic of an angelfish tank is like a soap opera to the point that my favorite viewing experiences were #1 a beanbag chair infront of a 75g watching the drama every night and #2 a 130g with a group of the most amazing double black veils you have ever seen. The black veils killed eachother, the few that remained died from their injuries but my god watching a pair go at it and dance around eachother was jaw dropping. I have kept many of them in many tank configurations and while each strain and each specimen therein is completely unique, this is not a generalized fish. Sections of the tank to claim for each pair, areas of water flow for separation and even confrontation, dither's everything you can think of in the hobby goes into it. Simply put you will not end up with 12 angel's in one 4ft tank. Side note to end with: in the same tank with the black veils I had a large school of guppies and the males all fought to the death, but one night I witnessed the last two males going at it with literally a ring of females around them watching like a water based fight club. I guess my point is that I have watched mainly my two favorite fish, angelfish and guppies for extended periods of time and while I don't expect you to put this much attention into one specific tank I ask that you understand that I have had enough angel tanks to know that it is far from simple to pull out the less than desirable specimens and expect a specified number to remain. With that said one of the best schooling fish to go with angels is rummy nose if they don't fit in the mouth (rummy's prefer to have a second schooling fish in the tank, that way they can school close together or dither throughout time).

I reccomend black mollies, they are beautiful fish that will grow in time, and are all black just as all your angels are white. But if it's tetras you'd prefer, I'd like to suggest phantom tetras or black skirt tetras. Keep up the good work, your majesty!

Just wanted to say that your videos have helped me grow the courage to finally get a larger tank. I used some of your tips and tricks and the tank stabilized faster than my first. Thank you so much for your vlogs! My own personal goal? to someday be able to get Parrot Cichlids (I know I know, contested and mutated...but they also deserve love!) to spawn and produce viable offspring. Again, thank you so much for your inspiration and your amazing guides!

Hey Joey,

You make fantastic and informative videos for all levels of keepers and I'd like to thank you for that. However, it does make me sad some times that you do not pick up more of a variety or rarer fish. A biotope aquarium can be very rewarding and can be informative to people of what can be kept together (regarding aggression, water qualities and temperatures). At the same time, while the fish you spotlight are all fantastic in their own regard, keeping some "rarer" fish could inspire keepers to step their game up to the next level or even help with conservation efforts. In an age where so many natural habitats are being lost, beautiful fish are disappearing from our earth. I'd love to see at least one tank that is a biotope or of an endangered species (I'm particularly in love with the cichlids of Madagascar)! You reach so many people with your amazing videos and I think it'd be great for them to hear about some of these points.

Again, thank you for your amazing videos that teach people so much!

Black skirt or black phantom tetras. Black neons would probably become angelfish food. I would go with the black phantoms, the females have some red in their fins and the dominant males get huuuuuge pitch black fins.

It's a shame you feel that way about the shell dwellers, I am so happy you brought these amazing fish to my attention! In Australia this is one of the fish I don't have trouble getting a hold of :) I have even turned the work tank into a shell dweller tank I love them! Personally the platinum angels aren't to my taste but I can't wait to see them in there tank with the tetras who knows my mind might change about those too! Another great vid Joey and thanks for sharing despite being sick tired and grumpy, hope your feeling better soon!

Paul V. Rotondi ohh i see...thanks for the suggest dude
Paul V. Rotondi
Paul V. Rotondi - 6 years ago
Hi Rizki...To follow up on something Joey just mentioned, you can transfer Multis and (Neolamprologus) similis from one tank to another by putting your hand in the tank and then removing the fish and the shell and then placing them in the other tank. But what if you don't want to transfer the shell along with the fish? One of the techniques I've been taught by my friend Jules in the Nassau County Aquarium Society here in Long Island, NY, is to take a large bucket or container and prop up a piece of plastic lighting diffuser (affectionately known as "Egg crate" at any big box hardware store). When you take the shells and the fish out of the tank, place the shells, entrance side down, on top of the egg crate. The fish will instinctively leave the shell and seek the safety of the bottom of the container. Then take the Egg crate out of the container and transfer the fish to their new home, and you can return the shells to the original tank.

Hope this helps! Happy Fishkeeping!

I am in the process of resealing a 75 gallon aquarium. I used GE silicon *1 and just saw on the label of the tube "not for use in aquariums". I took advice from your aquarium YouTube video and went for the same sealant you said was usable. After seeing on the tube that it shouldn't be used on aquariums, is this an issue that I should fix by resealing again with a different product?

I like the 120g tanks and all but I feel like u are rushing them a bit Joey, you first said you were going to take 2 months for each tank and then when they were all set up cycle trough them. now it seems like you are just buying fish because they are available. I knpw u can't schedule these type of things 100% but I just expected a much more indepth progress on each tanks and I know you think multiple species tanks are messy, but for educational purposes I think a well balanced tank with more variety will fit better.

again this is just my opinion and I love the work you do but this is just feedback.

maybe change the format a bit where u more explain the background of the species and their biotope, or are you planning to do a complete vid after for each tank after they are fully set up?

Yo Joey!... I'm glad u replied...im a big fan of ur channel...i haven't seen the video u mentioned but maybe if ph is higher...the nh4 in the bags converts back to nh3 gas....but I always thought acclamatising was a standard advice when u bring home fish from shops etc?

joachim * You should acclimate the fish in bags to the temprature of the tank youre putting them in. But, with the drip method I've heard on another fish YouTuber's channel that you shouldn't drip acclimate them with the water in the bags because it'll cause an ammonia spike. I'll link you the vid!

By the way, is there no risk the arowana and the bicher will have a go at the angles if you put them in there? As long as they get left alone it sounds like a great idea, they'd look great in there, but it would be an unnecessarily expensive live food if they ended up getting eaten by the big fish..

Tjita1
Tjita1 - 6 years ago
You absolutely can, but a lot less of them since they are a bit territorial. In my opinion the most beatiful SA tank you can have is a black water tank with altums and wild colored discus. It needs to be a large tank though, and I neither have the space nor the funds to set one up like that at the moment.. :(

What size tank would you need for 40?
Eval
Eval - 6 years ago
Any tank over 160 gallons will work but I'd prefer a 225-240 gallon tank reason is angel fish can get as big as the palm of your had so that's about 4-5 inches although rare Angel Fish can reach 12 inches in height and 6 inches wide the average height of an Angel Fish is 4 inches. They can get quite large, but only if you treat them with great care and provide them with flawless living conditions. Angelfish can grow as big as the size of your open hand with the fingers spread apart.

I don't understand why in a new tank and a closed loop system the requirement for QT. Its not like the QT tank is being medicated and that can be done in their new home anyway (thus the closed loop). But the fish look awesome kudos!!
The J-Vlog
The J-Vlog - 6 years ago
indeed and with a closed loop system like the one he has set up, the new tanks are effectively a QT tank in their own right. Thus I don't understand the transfer of the fish from 1 system to their new home in a 2nd system. As opposed to putting them in their permanent home right away and isolating it.

If there were existing fish in that tank I can see the QT, but the tank is empty and closed off.. = a QT
Eval
Eval - 6 years ago
Joey explained in his African Cichlid unboxing video that he set up each rack on one system yes, but he can divide that system with two separate sumps so they don't share the same water to accommodate quarantining fish if he needs to which is what he did with his Malawi Cichlids on the top tank.
Des - Gaming
Des - Gaming - 6 years ago
Each rack = 1 system. So if he puts a fish in one tank that has any kind of infection it will infect the other tank as well
The J-Vlog
The J-Vlog - 6 years ago
correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought each rack was on its own system. 2 tanks up top with the sump at the bottom.
Joanne McNeill
Joanne McNeill - 6 years ago
The J-Vlog I think the tanks are running on one system with one sump. So if one fish is infected with something it's not only going to affect it's tankmates, but the fish in all the other tanks too.

John SM
John SM - 6 years ago
Joey, you seem more hollow and shallow every video that goes by. I can't believe you are still banging on about the educational and inspirational aspects of your gallery. You are educating people to acclimate in a terrible rushed way, buy way more than you need, impulse buy, and swap and change your mind constantly. All terrible things to be teaching new or young aquarists.

You say you don't need a trophy or award, but you are totally an egomaniac. Feel very sorry for your fish.

I highly doubt those fish will still be in those tanks in a years time. They will be traded off, swapped out, abandoned or flushed.

Fishkeepers should be looking long term, committed to providing a stable environment for their fish to live a long and rewarding life.

Everything you teach is undoing what the true experts have taught for the past 30 or 50 years. Sad day for fishkeeping.
John SM
John SM - 6 years ago
So every other aquarist is wrong? His fish don't die because his water is from a fresh water well or spring on his property. You try it and see what happens.
fumanchu168
fumanchu168 - 6 years ago
I don't know, the fish are in bags full of ammonia, putting them in clean water probably much better than let air fill the bad and turn the pH high so the ammonia become very toxic. Also for long term success you need good male to female ratio for a lot of fish, but you can't sex juvenile easily so the best way to do is to over buy then trade. It would be a problem if you only buy a few and they start fighting and you have to trade them anyway. BTW none of his fish die from this "mishandling" so he obviously know what he is doing.

Just learn how to cycle your tank. Look up new tank syndrome. If you don't, your fish will probably all be dead in 2-3 weeks. Fancy goldfish are good starter fish. Don't use the feeder fish...and get them from a good pet store...not a big box store.

I get why you're quarantining some fish, but what specific pests are you trying to avoid?
Iloha Najmuddin
Iloha Najmuddin - 6 years ago
it's not just pests. Some of them can be sick and show no signs of sickness yet. When they do, well they are quarantined and will not transmit that sickness (largely due to bacteria or fungus) to all the healthy fishes that share the same filtration system. One of the common things that get transmmited from one fish to another is ick.

I've had an ammonia spike that killed off the majority of my tank before (newb medication mistake wiped out my bioload)and it was never yellow like that.

I highly reccomend black mollies. They are peaceful, social fish that are completely black. Normally they look smaller at stores, but they will grow big, which is why they'd do perfect in your tank. Although I'm not sure if they would make good tank mates, I don't know much about angel fish, but if they are you should replace the angel fish you return with those black mollies. If it's a tetra you'd prefer, I suggest black skirts, however, they wont be completely black, unless there are ones you can get with just black.

Joey, i had a platinum angel fish, and i had 2 calico (lost one, had a breeding pair too :( ) but i tell you what, the plat was a mean bastard, keep in mind this is in a 55, i'd say ample room for 3 3in angel fish, but hey it's cool you got these, and for everyone else, these are VERY pretty fish, the fins also get a blue tint and they're AMAZING!

Love the choice. I think you may run into behavioral issues before bioload is a problem. 20x angels in a 4ft tank. It will be interesting to see how aggression pans out. Maybe every time a pair forms, move one off into the 2k tank. Like, always move the female to avoid crowded pairs & fighting.

Very Nice Angel's fish, good choice in the Platinum ! Koi would have been the worse... maybe I would have stop watching your video, just joking ! As for the tetra, there is a nice selection in black colored ones. Not sure black shirt would look nice, not what I would go with...  emperor are very nice, but from my experience, not very schooling and can be fin nippers sometime... black phantom are VERY nice, I have some, they are awesome when showing off to the female. By the way, a nice group of corydoras would also look great in this tank ! Continue the good work, I'm enjoying every video you make !

Justin Bridgemohan Joey has answered this question many times. When fish are shipped distance, in this case from Thailand, they need to get into fresh water as soon as possible. Once the bag is open, the waste in the water starts reacting wih the fresh air. Joey is doing he right thing for fish shipped a distance.

The angels are pretty, but I think I prefer discus. Passing by the angel tank in a fish store, they seemed too skittish to me. I'd rather have something that would come to the glass to greet me. Or at least not swim away and hide.

My two dream tanks would have to be:
1. A 500 gallon tank with a golden moray eel
2. A 30,000+ gallon aquarium with big/monster fish. It'd probably have a platinum and blood red arowana, a variety of different colored discus and oscars, some koi, a pleco, and assortment of catfish and maybe peacock bass.... Possibly a pearl stingray or two...
I thought about maybe a gar or aropima, but then I saw just how massive they got, so I thought better not cause I'd be scared they'd eat the other fish.
Rockstar Bulldog
Rockstar Bulldog - 6 years ago
Lime Shredder
I know, some of them get 2+ feet long. The MINIMUM size I thought about was 30,000 gallons, though I would prefer 60,000. I know it'd have to be custom built like Joey's 2k gallon. Thats why what I'd LOVE to do is have my own house designed, and have it designed around the massive aquarium.
Lime Shredder
Lime Shredder - 6 years ago
Rockstar Bulldog Most of the "monster" fish you want to keep will eventually get so big you couldn't keep them in any tank, however I do like the idea of a huge aquarium with a large variety of fish.
