You could but the reaction is so quick and short it's not worth the hassle. Same thing with dry ice. Although dry ice would last longer than baking soda + vinegar, the yeast + sugar can last weeks.

OK. This video was made in 2012. It is now 2016. You can buy a DIY CO2 kit on amazon for around $15. Buy a drop counter, co2 diffuser, baking soda, citric adic, and get two 2-liter bottles. Now you have a easy co2 setup. 1:3 citric acid / water ratio. 1:1 baking soda / water ratio. I'm currently doing 1.5 bubbles per second for a 10g heavily planted non-stocked tank.

I estimate this mixture to last about 2 weeks.

Bill Deacon
Bill Deacon - 8 years ago
As a craft beer brewer I can shed a little light on making yeast last longer and co2 more voluminous. Most of the DIY planted tank systems I see use way too much sugar. If using baking yeast, 1 cup of sugar to 8 cups of water is too much. Baking yeast dies at about 4% alcohol. If using brewers yeast ( available from local or on line home brew sources), then you can use 3 times more sugar to water. Also, dosing a new batch of sugar water with reclaimed yeast will work well for 5 or 8 generations of use. Also using a prepared yeast nutrient which contains diamonium sulfide ( also available from home brew supply) will make yeast last much longer in a nutrient poor solution of table sugar. An addition of a small amount of fruit juice will substitute in a reasonable manner as a substitute for commercial yeast nutrient. Grape juice is especialy fermentable.

+Lucas J Benfell I would pull up a calculator or table that can be found on almost any home-brew or wine-making site; the plan on 4% max with cheap yeast.

Alternatively buy some EC #1118 off amazon and brew for 16%; tripling your CO2 production in any given batch.

ie

So if using bakers yeast would 1/2 a cup of sugar to 2ltrs of water and 3grms yeast be a more suitable mix?

funny you say that; I do 3-3.5 gallon brews of wine throughout summer. My CO2 goes into fish tank, just make sure i have plenty of head room in container. :)

I see a lot of mis-information; like Bill mentioned you regulate yeast with sugar and alcohol content. Typically you measure SG or specific gravity which is basically a measure of how much sugar is in the water to get the max alcohol level. Which means the max CO2.

Some people try to regulate CO2 production with amount of yeast pitched; this is pure rubbish. That yeast you pitch grows and reproduces so quickly; it really doesn't matter on starting amount.

Using a champagne yeast (EC #1118 is my goto) or other very tolerant yeast; you could starve yeast for sugar to regulate production and then just slowly add sugar as needed. And buy some yeast nutrient. Aerate and shake with new sugar; until it hits 18% alchol those yeast'ys will come back to life.

Best part; when its done; you can drink it... :) Although using just sugar+water; the flavour would be quite bad.
Bill Deacon
Bill Deacon - 8 years ago
pinheadcurly, yes, as long as you have enough head room to insure that the brew does not overflow and enter the tube during the first couple of days of fermentation. Mead usually does not foam a lot, so probably not a problem. A one gallon batch is about right for a 20 gallon tank, but a 5 gallon batch on a 10 gallon tank would probably be way too much.
pinheadcurly
pinheadcurly - 8 years ago
+Bill Deacon Does this mean I could attach a hose to the carburetor of a small batch of mead, and sink the other end in the fish tank for CO2?

One thing, Do the Same Procedure :
BUT some tips and changes >>

* For Yeast Just use your hand and blend the sugar for some mins(Like playing with the water, That's it ) Our Hands are enough to make the Superb Yeast.. so don't need to purchase yeast.

* After Mixing it, If you keep it with closed lid or something Then the temperature will be increased and keep it in Some Hot Places(Not on Sunshine or Stove, etc) But the kitchen is best place..

* If you have done the above procedure, Next wait for 8hrs to 12hrs or Even More(More hrs, More Yeasts, More Bubbles Lasts) To Get More Yeasts.. You will see more bubbles upon the Mixed Sugar and Yeast after the Hrs...

* Use light Aquarium Stones to push the air ease..

160 gallon tank, its well work,? how long will it work until you change the water,.in the big bottle?
Iknow789
Iknow789 - 9 years ago
+Macario Rosento 160 gallons is probably too large to see any significant results with a yeast CO2 method. A chemical reaction CO2 system might work, but even then getting it set up would be difficult and it would probably be costly to maintain. Realistically DIY CO2 bottles are only practical for 55 gallons or less(and even a 55 gallon would be pretty difficult to get right).

Iknow789
Iknow789 - 9 years ago
+keerthy kumar It's possible the CO2 is dissolving into the water in the tube, if I understand what you are saying correctly in that bubbles are traveling from the bottles but not making it into the tank itself. Though if you're not getting enough pressure to clear the line, the yeast may have been bad or killed by water that was too warm.

The citric acid, water and sodium bicarbonate is more effective. No?
Iknow789
Iknow789 - 9 years ago
+Nagy László I would say so, simply because it's more controllable and easier to maintain a consistent level. Though I'd probably use HCl and CaCO3 simply because the math is cleaner and the finished solution can be used as a calcium supplement if the HCl is high quality.

depends- how big is your aquarium, how many plants you have, how strong is your air pump, what kind of filter you have, and how fast is the flow (the higher, the better the gas exchange). It also depends on the type of air stone you have and where is it placed. Generally air pump and good filter should work fine together. The best would be to check the DO (Dissolved Oxygen), I have access to them at the University, but I'm not sure how much would it cost to buy one- it might be expensive.

GH- a bit too high imo, I would try to lower it to 12 or lower (keep it in 4-12 range), but first check what your fish species require (find a care sheet for your fish species). NO2 and NO3 0? No good. It might mean that there is not enough microbial activity to convert ammonia to nitrites and nitrates. Try adding some bacteria- filter-boosting liquid or bacteria gel balls (nitryfying bacteria). If you have a chance to do so, try to measure the dissolved oxygen, it's also important- remember that the higher the temperature, the less oxygen is dissolved in water. Too high temperature and oxygen gets depleated, causing fish and other animals to die.

No problems, I understand what you are trying to say, and that's the main point. It's hard to say what is wrong man... If you didn't cycle it long enough, the water tests would be bad. Maybe a disease they had before you got them? You didn't use any copper pipes anywhere in your system? Was it just 1 type of fish that died, or the 7 fish which died were of different species? I am sure you can determine the reason for such a rapid death, it just takes some time and good analysis of the facts...

Well, there are a few possible reasons. Maybe your yeast started a little bit slower, and you need to give them some more time. Maybe it's too cold in your room. Maybe the CO2 system is not sealed- in this case CO2 will escape through the gaps. Are there bubbles going through the second (smaller) bottle, but not any further? Did you wait for the water to cool down before adding yeast?

Yes I admit, I was wrong about the check valve, but that's because I've arranged my tank in a way that everything, including the diy external filter, is above the tank, so I never had to bother about it from the very start...
HayateV3
HayateV3 - 9 years ago
  +Piterszczyk
you were telling him that a check valve is in regards to CO2 levels, but that has nothing to do with it.

It is true that you do need a check valve only if the CO2 system is below the water level of the tank, but rarely does anybody put the CO2 system on top. And even if your tank is beneath the system, i recommend the valve anyways, in case you decide to re-arrange the system later or you happen to disconnect the tubing during maintenance and it falls and hangs below water-level.

Piterszczyk
Piterszczyk - 9 years ago
+luc snippe
go back to the link I posted earlier. See what levels of CO2 are good for the plants, and what levels are dangerous to fish. Try adding CO2 slowly and monitor the increase in levels. How much CO2 will dissolve in your tank depends on many factors- size of your plants, temperature, amount of organisms present, type of an air stone, how fast the gas bubbles travel to the surface, size of the bubbles etc. So best to try supplying CO2 and monitoring the results to find what is optimum CO2 you need to supply.

That's the case if you have your CO2 supply system below the aquarium. If you have it above the aquarium such problem wont exist.

The check valve simply keeps the water from flooding the system in case of a leak... it has nothing to do with the c02 levels, it simply keeps the water from getting everywhere and making a mess in case of catastrophe.

guys i tried this method when i first started growing plants.. now am a supplier of aquatic plants here in asia i would rather recommend you to get a bottle of venigar or acetic acid and dilute it to venigar by adding 5ml of acetic acid to 96-100ml of water to get your self made venigar then just add a spoon of baking soda wrapped in a piece of paper and throw it in the bottle with a tube and a air controller this method produces instant co2 and has good preasure then just run the end of the tube to the inlet of your power head which acts as the dispenser best co2 effect you will ever want trust!!

+Iknow789 Citric acid is also used as a herbicide. It works very well for getting rid of bramble bushes on your land. In fact any acid can act like one, as soon as the solution used is strong enough.

+Manu M acid+carbonate reaction is good, but acetate vapor can end up in the tank and is an herbicide so using vinegar can kill your plants. Better to use a different acid, such as HCl or citric acid.

How frequently do you need to change the reactant vessel (vinegar and baking soda)?

Can I replace silicon with hot glue ?!
iamjahboo
iamjahboo - 9 years ago
generally no. hot glue isn't as elastic as silicone after it cures and is very susceptible to leaks. I have used superglue for small pieces though which has no elasticity but I guess superglue is just that much stronger than hot glue.

You might just want to use silicone it's jsut a couple dollars at home depot.  but im sure that will work just as well

You're welcome indeed! Great that it works now ;) Be careful to switch it off over night, otherwise it might lower your ph-rate too much...

I had that problem too at the beginning, one of the tops was leaking, so I put some more silicon and then it worked wonderfully.
@aquanaut2012 Thanks for posting, it workes great for my two tanks! ;)

Once made, how long will it give off C02?
iamjahboo
iamjahboo - 9 years ago
since you're essentially making alcohol in this device, you can use wine yeast and they'll be able to live longer and thus keep making CO2 longer than yeast you get in a food store.

no baking soda, just sugar and yeast, but NOT past date yeast,  i didnt touch it with my hands (skin grease), in hot water, mild hot.
and i think it was very good yeast.

Mine gave CO2, enough for 15gal, for 7 weeks, it was starting to be too low at 8 weeks, and is still giving CO2 today, almost nothing tho, like 10 weeks after, not kidding.

Hi, for a 20gal tank I would take 250gr sugar and a half teaspoon of yeast. That shout be enough for 3 to 4 weeks. I hope, I could help you and thanks you for watching my channel :-)

Won't your co2 bottle explode under the pressure if you block it's flow during the night?

+RazorModz need help on how to make a simplified co2 filter in a room
RazorModz
RazorModz - 10 years ago
I think he's actually releasing the co2 into the room as the valve he is using has an open end so he's not actually blocking the flow to the tank but rather opening the open ended valve so the co2 escapes into the room. I thought the same thing as you at first.

You could keep the co2 until the lights are off (10 hours of light) because as soon as the lights are off the co2 would do anything because it needs light in order to work
AVALOTA

Because residue from sugar might poison your fish. The second bottle is the filter- keeping in all the bad stuff, and then only clean gas will come out from the second bottle, going in to your Aquarium. But I have a question myself: how many hours a day the CO2 should be allowed to go in to Aquarium?

Using this method (wich includes yeast), does it semll bad, does it appear any change in the smell of the water aquarium? I want to know, because I have the aquarium in my bedroom and this is important to me.
