Aquascaping - Aquarium Ideas from nature (karst spring)

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/DefiniteAquascapeTV YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/DefiniteAquascapeTV SITE: http://definiteaquascape.tv The purpose of this video is to serve as an inspiration for all the aquarists and aquascapers who are interested in natural underwater biotopes. This is how karst spring looks like. There are almost no aquatic plants underwater, nor are there any fish, which is surprising, because there is a lot o fish food in the water (small Crustaceans). Aquascape of karst spring can be recreated in aquarium quite easily - you don't need expensive LED lighting, CO2 supply system or aquarium plant fertilizers. All what is needed are some stones and driftwood used as decoration, as well as some dried leaves put on the aquarium substrate. However, quite good filtration system should be used. First, becasue there are no aquarium plants which help to keep the water clean, second, because it would be good to create current, which is also present in the spring. If one would like to keep coldwater fish in such biotope aquarium, I would strongly advise to use aquarium chiller to keep water temperature below 10-15 Celsius degrees.

Place the outlet of the filter underneath the sand, facing up. Check my other channel, DefiniteAquascapeTV, and two of my videos, "Aquascaping - The Art of the Planted Aquarium 2013 XL pt.4" and "Aquascaping - The Art of the Planted Aquarium 2013 Nano pt.6". There are two examples of aquariums with such effect.

Hehe, I think it's much too cold for summer time :) I barely could straighten my fingers when I was filming underwater for more than 2-3 minutes :)

Nope, they are not hot wells :) On the contrary - they are just normal springs, and the water is %@#$@#$%@ cold :)

Hey, nice area! (I mean, the Artvin city) :) Seems to be in the mountains - are there any reeds in rivers in the mountains?

and you can try to take some equip. with you for new ideas. ex. i am collecting my own plants from rivers and lakes but its not easy as seen. some has hairy roots and they are really hard to clean and can carry different water animals that we don't want in aquarium. but i find a thin reed in a river near me ( Turkey,Artvin ) you can look city pictures in google has a large flora and that reed becomes the best guppy home to me. plant root types and tastes if the fish like its also problem

Yes, I was wondering about it, too... There are some Crustaceans in the water, even a lot of them, but there are absolutely no fish - or I couldn't see them. There are trouts in the ponds farter away (the stream is running into these ponds), but there are no fish in the stream. Maybe it's too shallow, too cold, or too sth else...?
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 12 years ago
Nooo, it's oxygen produced by the algae. In shallow water, during sunny days of the summer, you would be surpised how many oxygen bubbles are produced :) It looks really great! :)

@salalalam Thanks! And the music was chosen deliberately - I was inspired by this quickly flowing small stream at the beginning of the movie.

@DefiniteAquascapeTV Good point! I feel a natural biotope is what nature created. We all try in the create a natural look in our aquariums and base it on real biotope. The other created by humans for fish growing is called aquaculture.
DefiniteAquascapeTV
DefiniteAquascapeTV - 13 years ago
@martyhowie75 Well, you're right - to some extent ;) It all depends on what one will call a "natural" biotope. In my opinion this karst spring is more "natural" than, say, a semi-natural pond, created by humans for fish growing. I could call the movie "90% natural biotope", this would probably reflect the presence of this dam... ;)
martyhowie75
martyhowie75 - 13 years ago
Great vid, but how can you call your vid a Natural biotope with a man made dam on it. That pool is man made not a natural biotope.

@akwabiotop The water level looked low, Dry season? summer time? Where I'm from the trout and other fish leave river systems and streams during times of lower water level.

@drjazzisme You're right - it's not tropical. The site is located in Central Europe, namely in Poland :) The absence of fish surprised me, too. There is one trout at the end of the movie, in the biggest pond, but it seems that there are no fish in pools and creeks situated before this pond. Two possiibilities - either there really are no fish there (which would be strange due to the abundance of small Crustaceans), or there are fish, but they were hiding when I was filming...
