Appartenente alla famiglia Cyprinidae è diffuso in Medio Oriente, nelle acque dolci di Turchia, Iran, Siria, Giordania, Tigri ed Eufrate, dove abita fiumi, lagune, canali, stagni. Corpo tozzo e allungato, a sezione arrotondata, pinne semitrasparenti robuste. La bocca è rivolta verso il basso ed è provvista di barbigli. La pinna caudale è tozza, corta e bilobata. La livrea varia dal marrone giallo al bruno verdastro, con chiazze scure. Le scaglie sono grandi e profilate, spesso non tutte della stessa tonalità.Sono dotati di dentatura faringea, vivono in media di 4-5 anni. La luce forte e diretta non è amata da Garra rufa, meglio quindi adottare materiali di fondo non troppo chiari. Non è molto compatibile con altre specie di fondo ed è oviparo, il dimorfismo non è accentuato, si potrà notare solo in fase di accoppiamento. E' onnivoro e si nutre prevalentemente di fitoplancton (alghe) e di detriti animali, risulta essere uno dei migliori mangia-alghe. IGarra rufa sono utilizzati come terapia per la cura della psoriasi ed altri disturbi dermatologici. Sono tradizionalmente utilizzati per effettuare cure di podologia.Inizieranno a “mordicchiare” asportano la pelle morta o danneggiata liberandone i pori e favorendo la circolazione del sangue. Nel rimuovere la pelle secca e i calli, i Garra Rufa rilasciano uno speciale enzima, il "Dithranol", che agisce rapidamente sulla rigenerazione cutanea, rendendo così il trattamento molto valido ad esempio nei casi di psoriasi.
