hello

i've been watching a lot of these planted aquariums and got really interested in making my own.
however, when i went to our best fish shop in town (and probably the only one) they told me that to keep the plants healthy and to give it the longest life-span it would require some kind of a liquid fertiliser. i haven't seen it in any planted aquarium videos where they put that, is it actually a thing and needed?

if anyone can help i would really appreciate it :)

Two days ago I decided that is will be easier to redo whole tank, pull out all plants and hard scape than to sut my plants to the hight I would like it to be :) I also use the same substrat, no CO2 at the moment as plants are growing like crazy. From my 30l tank I got full 4l bowl of hydrocotyla... Never had that great growth befor using the good substrate.... And I also had to replant my lotos as it grew on the opposite side to where I planted it and had 10cm long roots...

Great video and great DIY build. I love the detail and the crisp images used to make it feel like we are actually there.

That brings me to my problem...

The lights on my aquarium have given up the ghost and so I am looking for a DIY solution, either that or get a new tank as the off-the-shelf solutions are either not right or too expensive. I have been looking to use those LED floodlights but have concerns about the amount of heat they generate. I know LED do not generate that much heat (depending on LED types) but they do produce some. My tank is probably three times the depth of the tank in this video. Hence I would look to get bigger lights which of course generate even more heat. Are you able to give advice on how much heat these do generate compared to a standard florescent tube light. i don't want the hud of my tank to start melting.

Also, I would love to see a DIY project which utilised the heat generated from a light source to heat up passing water and reducing the use of the dedicated heater.

I found out by accident this past week that the paint Home Depot sales, Behr, is all acrylic and you can get a small 'test sample' for less than $3.00. This allows you to get whatever color/shade you want if you want to paint the back of your aquarium instead of using film. It adheres really well to glass, I don't have any acrylic tanks to try it on. Just a helpful hint if anyone is interested.

This nano project you've completed is amazing. I don't do CO2 and I really think it makes a difference in the speed of plant growth in this build and set up. My plants grow much more slowly.

Teagan Combest
Teagan Combest - 7 years ago
mkolman16 no, there are methods to grow plants without added CO2 but remember that plants will only grow as fast as their most limiting factor will allow, so if were not adding any CO2, it will likely stay around normal water saturation levels of 2ppm. Given suffecient light and nutrients (either rich substrate like in this video or adding fertilizers or root tabs ditectly to the substrate/ water column) planta will grow with 2ppm CO2, they will just grow slower. which can be good if you dont want to be trimming things constantly and just like the natural look.

So I just planted my nano (2 nights ago). I have a co2 kit, I was wondering, do I keep the co2 running always? Do I put it on when the lights are out? What, when, and how exactly should co2 be used in a [freshly] planted aquarium?
Also, when I add animals (shrimp and some algae thriving species along with potential neon tetras) do I need to have the co2 running still? Or do I shift to air stones?
I really hope you see/reply to this, and I look forward to reading your response.
As always, beautiful work. Keep it up bud

Panthera CO2 should only be running when the lights are on (and depending on your photoperiod, maybe an hour less on each end) because in the dark plants do not photosynthesize and actually respirate (take in O2, release CO2 like us) so it will just be wasted, and if there are any animals. they might be harmed by the increase in CO2 concentration at night. With livestock, CO2 should be kept steady and well under the "danger zone" of 30ppm. definitely learn how to test your CO2 comcentraion if you plan to use it

If you agitate water on the surface, you will lose all co2 injected. Am I right?
EighthNotch
EighthNotch - 7 years ago
Ando Lucy it was but as you can see it still didn't affect plant growth that much. I had the same level of agitation on my planted tank and it was mostly to keep the nasty protein slime from forming on the surface

You should add some Red Cherry shrimp, one Bolivian ram and a trio of Ember Tetras. That combination really goes nice together

I have a question. is it hard to build your own fish tank I have a regular 45 gallon tank and I need 70 to 100 gallon tank for my fish. or will I just had to buy one straight up. just want to know could you help me out. My fishes need room to move around they keep fighting each other cuz it too close. so what I need is help and I need your opinion. And this is fresh water fish.

Hey Joe, question.... I have a 110Gal breeder tank that I'll be using for an Aquatic Turtle, currently he's in a 30gal. The new tank won't be filled all the way do to having to make him a dock to sunbathe on, the question I have is.... Can I use the 30gal to make a Sump tank like you build, will it function the same for a Turtle as it does for fish??  Thanks, man and keep these videos coming

Do you have to have animals/fish in a planted aquarium? Also how is the maintenance on a planted aquarium? Do you need to do water changes or clean the substrate or anything like that?

try one of the recent videos about lighting I believe it was linked in the description if not he said they were LED floodlights and kelvin around 4500 I believe any brand names or whatnot is pointless as they are quite cheap they would all be of similar quality for what you are paying

The nano tank is great ! Congrats. I have a question... Is there a particular reason why you went with a plain layer substrate ? Giving that you have a lot of amazonia it would added a lot more interest to the aquascape to have some "mountains". (sorry for the english) Keep it up !
Teagan Combest

Tottinguero sloped substrates have a tendency to revert to flat over time without any hardscape to keep its shape.

i dipped my newly purchased egeria plants in a salt-water solution to get rid of any pest snails. While i did get rid of the few snails,i harmed the plant as in a couple days it lost all its leaves.I can t think of anything else since i have already other plants. What safe way of getting rid of snails do you know?
Teagan Combest
Teagan Combest - 7 years ago
Well as long as you don't seriously overfeed and neglect your cleaning husbandry on the tank, snails can't take it over. (they can't outgrow their food source) I've honestly never had a problem with snails and in fact I think my tank with over ~500 malaysian trumpet snails is probably the cleanest and healthiest tank I have PLUS I think they're cute :3. I actually encourage my mini ramshorns to breed by slightly overfeeding cause I just like them and they're so useful at eating algae and discarded food that nobody else wants. I guess if you really hate the way they look you can try to fight them but you're basically trying to fight against nature haha.
