Depends on the type of gold fish you're talking about. Those big fat fancy tailed bloated ones, I would say no. They create a lot of waste and ammonia. That's too much for just one gallon of water. The smaller slimmer ones, maybe, but they still poop a lot. Try small Mollies or guppies. If you don't have much room in a tank, getting the smallest fish is best.
I think 5-6 neons, or 3-4 mollies or 4-5 guppies is more interesting than 1-2 big fat gold fish.
There are other smaller types of fish, but I don't know what they're called. Small fresh water shrimp are cool too. They help keep the tank clean. Read up on how to take care of them though.
