No lie, I haven't done a water change on my 90 gallon in 11 months. I took the skimmer out 5 months ago for cleaning and never put it back in, I only have a filter sock for filtration and some cheato that just floats around in the 20 long home made sump. I feed once a day and everything is alive and well. Didn't do all this on purpose, life just got in the way and I didn't want to take it down so I just add the water that evaporates and don't mess with it.

David Sitompul
David Sitompul - 7 years ago
I'm skeptical abt the no water change thingy, but thats just because his sump is very small.

It's actually possible to maintain a reef tank without water change. In fact, most of marine aquarium shops here in indonesia (where most of your beautiful fishes came from) very rarely, if not never, do water change for their tanks.

To maintain their aquarium, they use a huge sump (>>10m) filled with live rocks and dead corals (but not finely crushed like what you often see in branded aquarium media). To keep the salinity stable, they only add ground water every few weeks

Granted their tanks are not as pristine as this one. Their tanks tend to have algae problem (most likely because of the high phos from the ground water), and the corals dont bloom as beautiful as this man's tank (they only use cheap lighting). But hey.. no water change is no water change

he had that tank for 23 years , but at the ˇˇ beginning ˇˇ he did water changes , and there was a normal sump with a skimmer , his system has matured over the years , there are only 4 little fish in there so i dont see the reason why not to run that tank without water changes .... corals soak up the nutrients especially the softies , so i dont see an issue there ...

Tyler's Reef - 7 years ago
I'm not sure about that :)
I hear after a few years most tanks will have completely settled as long as you stop changing the bioload and it can support itself. Soft corals will absorb some nitrates and phosphates so I wouldn't be surprised if it actually was running just fine if he feeds lightly
Julia Rizzi
Julia Rizzi - 7 years ago
Garnett Miller there are many people who don't do water changes on their tanks - or even run protein skinmers. Some people have just mastered the way of a tank that maintains itself. In the end you have created a mini ecosystem. Hopefully one day I can get to that! For now I'll stick with water changes

While this is a beautiful tank setup I dont believe his claims. His I just dont do any maintenance claims are complete bull. Also he talks about having different setups and corals and fish and that he uses this tank as a quarantine tank. Yeah right and that he just doesnt try to keep things that arent going to live there. I think he's had lots of fish and coral die there. And the visible areas look brand new with no stains or anything while his sump looks like a dirty toilet. Just dont buy what hes saying as fact.

I THINK i started understanding how these people are able to have maintenance free tanks. the idea is leave the tank to take its time and stabilize, dont rush on throwing things. put one thing at a time (patience) and wait for your system to stabilize again. within time your system will have a life of things u can and cant see and will develop its own eco system. sorry for using system alot, I work with computers ;)

Stable stand
Sta´ble stand` (stănd`)
1. (O.Eng. Law) The position of a man who is found at his standing in the forest, with a crossbow or a longbow bent, ready to shoot at a deer, or close by a tree with greyhounds in a leash ready to slip; - one of the four presumptions that a man intends stealing the king's deer.

See, I'm well versed.
John Burgess
John Burgess - 7 years ago
What I mean is if you lose a half a gallon or a gallon of 20 gallons due to evaporation, it's huge to the change in salinity, the salinity increases much faster, when compared to lets say a 100 gallon reef tank. Yes, you top off with freshwater and the salinity goes down, but this fluctuation in salinity is detrimental in small marine environments, where it would be less affecting in larger aquariums where the evaporation is a smaller percentage of the total water volume.
I'm not saying he's going nuts to maintain it, but he's lying if he says he doesn't maintain it and check parameters on a regular basis, and top off, hell he doesn't even have the salty crust on the glass at the water line.
Wesley42079
Wesley42079 - 7 years ago
John Burgess, Maybe if you had the tank on a stable stand, then you'd be able to keep it "balanced." LOL.

Did you see what I did there? A play on one of your words.
Julia Rizzi
Julia Rizzi - 7 years ago
Oopsydaisy07 ᅳᄃ the man never said he doesn't dose. It is a low maintenance tank. It has few fish which means small bioload, probably doesn't do excessive feeding, and contains easy to take of corals that can take one hell of a beating when it comes to fluctuations in water parameters. Not to mention these types of corals enjoy dirtier water. And no, salinity does not evaporate - hence why you have to top off with fresh water to keep your salinity in check
Oopsydaisy07 ᅳᄃ
Oopsydaisy07 ᅳᄃ - 7 years ago
John Burgess what do you mean the salinity is affected by evaporation, the water evaporates you put fresh water in it not more salt water, the water evaporates not the salt. The only time you should put salt water back into your tank is when you're doing a water change. But I do think you're right about him lying not having to do any maintenance on the tank.
John Burgess
John Burgess - 7 years ago
Oopsydaisy07 ᅳᄃ I can explain it. he's lying. no way those corals aren't sucking up all the minerals and nutrients in the water or that a 29 gallons salinity isn't effected by evaporation.
I've tried a 20 gallon salt and it was a nightmare to try to keep balanced.

#35 Rossy's Reef it's a standard UV bulb that you buy from a petstore and then put into a standard fluroscent light fixture that you put tube lights in from the hardware store. Different sizes of bulb, different sizes of fixtures.

Be sure to check what length of bulb is best suited for your tank, find a compatible light fixture from the pet store or hardware store.

This guy used flexible metal wire to hold it up. Just bend some wire and you have this guy's light setup.

Cheers ;)

Nice tank and great to see a system running for so long!
Some research that helps explain how corals are proactively creating a favorable environments was done a couple years ago by Dr Andreas Hass, here's a link for those interested and a couple additional links of similar research:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3719129/
http://www.nature.com/ismej/journal/v7/n5/full/ismej2012161a.html?message=remove&foxtrotcallback=true
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3719127/
Couple this with the research Sanjey participated in showing skimmers skew microbial populations it seems easy to surmise his approach optimizes the microbial processes beneficial for corals.

While my understanding of DOC is very, very limited it seems to me the issue of refractory DOCs building up in his system are going to cause issues at some point if no water changes done. It would be interesting to see yearly follow up videos.

Couple questions:
Considering how much faster sponges are at pulling stuff out of the water than bacteria, one question is what kind of cryptic sponge coverage is in the sump and behind the rocks?
Sanjey comments about pulling out a large mat of P. Grandes, how much and how often does he remove corals?

Beautiful tank and quite an accomplishment keeping it so long!

He makes this stuff looks so easy but you know 99% of us out there will never be able to run tanks like he does because he was somehow born with "the juice." Sanjay will be like "I just threw some water in this bucket and added some coral along with this dolphin and a light from Home Depot and now I got this museum-like aquarium." Do you even feed any of the animals in the bucket Sanjay? Sanjay: "Nope. I just pour some of this red wine in the bucket every other month and that's it."

Dinesh Raj Methuku If you're referring to me as one who needs "pity" , save your breath. I've heard of Joshi, his good friend Mike Pilleta and Julian Sprung many times over, watched many videos on them and read more than a few articles published by them. Like I said , I've been reefing for over 10 years and I kept freshwater aquariums 20 years before that. So I am hardly some "neophyte " in the hobby.

With that said, although I dont claim to be an expert and certainly don't have the breadth of experience as these individuals, I don't agree with some current "trends" in te hobby such as "no water changes" or " you need some "nitrates and phosphates in your system"-no you do not! These are pollutants, not coral foods. They also fuel problem algae growth. I also don't believe you need every additive under the sun either.

ericr530 I'm talking to the guy trying to tell people to spend money on unnecessary, expensive equipment just because everyone else is? Everyone has a different way of doing things and a different opinion of what nice is. Like me I prefer soft corals and LPS over sps and also run a tank with no sump or skimmer and agree with you keeping up on water changes is a must.

BTW he DID mention in the video he only puts in corals in the tank he knows would do well and survive ie soft easy to care for corals ie no sps.

How bow he does whatever the hell setup he wants to do and enjoys the hobby the way HE wants, how bow dah? How does the way someone sets up their reef for them to enjoy affect you?
ericr530
ericr530 - 7 years ago
Nah beautiful. As long as you can maintain proper Alk and Ca, SPS corals to me are easier than softies, at least in my experience.  I find easier to keep a clean tank than dirty one. Every dickhead is growing Acros these days, it's getting more rare to see a really pretty dedicated softies tank.  Softies are fairly forgiving of water quality but they are very finicky with lighting and flow and they grow notoriously slow under leds.  With all due respect, I'm gonna have to depart with Sanjay on the no water changes thing.  In my 10+ years of reefing experience,  except when cycling a tank, I have yet to see any good from prolonging a water change, even for less demanding soft coral tanks.
SurvivalHorrorTV
SurvivalHorrorTV - 7 years ago
nope, I just see all these "no skimmer, no water change" claims, and every time it's a tank full of soft junk corals. how bow, not be a lazy bastard and do some water changes, and spend some money on equipment, like everyone else in the hobby does.

one of the nicest tanks I had was a 120g soft coral (and RBTA) tank, it did have a skimmer (but a very cheap one) but yeah it was one of those water change every other year if I could be bothered to get to it type of things. Had dwarf angels in it, all the mean fish (not predator ones just mean), and it ran great. Unfortunately dumbass me did a live experiment on how torque works and snapped the back pane of glass. But it did manage to get into a UK aquarium magazine so I'm happy about that :D

Very cool. How does the tank get by with no nutrient export? Bacteria breaks detritus down to nitrate, but what then? I think I have read that DSB may harbour anaerobic bacteria which completes the nutrient cycle but I don't know too much about this and it doesn't look like he has that much sand in there anyway. Could anyone explain this to me? Not like a planted tank where the plants use the waste and can't see any algae in there. And aren't there some parameters that soft corals would still deplete and therefore need replaced, e.g calcium (although slowly but surely not 5 years slowly)? Wonder what his parameters would be. Awesome tank.
alan .strickland
alan .strickland - 7 years ago
mh94 a softy tank like Sanjays has a lot in common with a planted tank, the soft corals take up nitrates and phosphates and it is why softy tanks are sometimes referred to wrongly as dirty tanks , If you changed the parameters to what is more common in an sps tank a lot of those beautiful corals would either melt away or at best stop growing through lack of nutrients .
Ive used soft corals in the same way macro algae is used and it can be very successful it just takes time to find a balance of nutrients in to coral growth and i just used very small amounts of kalk in the top off occasionally to keep up with minimal depletion of calcium/alk/magnesium.
I think its time people took a fresh look at softy tanks as the movement and flow in them is really quite beautiful and a change from the static colourful stick approach ;)
dfaik
dfaik - 7 years ago
Nitrogen should just cycle out (live rock, sand etc). That part makes sense to me (very low fish stock).
Don't get how he gets the phosphate out. My suspicion is he doses something and is using GFO for phosphate removal. Also suspect if he leaves a tang in there for long he'll need to do something more than that, as they eat and poo a lot!

more water + sump = more stability & more possibilities to make your tank easier to care for and maintain such as in sump refugium, algae scrubber, marine pure, GFO etc etc .. whatever decision you make good luck !, ive subbed your channel make sure to put a few videos up of it once its up and running !

mitchee OG Thanks for the advice! I will definitely check out your build! And I think you're right: a smaller tank would be absurd. I'm a glutton for punishment but I don't think I'd enjoy my tank as much if it was smaller and could crash at any minute. I never planned on having fish but, now that so many great species are being aquacultured, I feel like it'd be a missed opportunity not to. Happy reefing!
AusReef Guy
AusReef Guy - 7 years ago
also a 30g would open up more options for fish, as anything smaller and youd be quite limited really lol
this might come in handy;

AusReef Guy
AusReef Guy - 7 years ago
haha yeah i know what you mean, been there done that lol, and if i were you id go with atleast a 30 gallon, smaller tanks a lot of things can go wrong fairly quickly, little things you wouldnt even think would go wrong for example on my tank since the skimmer has been going nuts it has been having minor splashing in my sump which caused the salinity to drop to 1.020 which is no big deal easily fixed and all .. but imagine if it was a 13.5g tank stocked with coral etc ? it'd be alot of uneccessary stress and possibly game over .. so yeah bit of food for thought, and yeah i have been documenting my build on The Reef Tank, have a look here if your interested: http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/f6/minireef-120-build-thread-getting-there-slowly-265074-4.html

wil be updating tomorrow and again in a week or two after that, you should consider doing a build thread once yours is coming together !, PEACE and good luck !
