Adatto a vasche dai 150 lt in su, con ampio spazio per il nuoto ma allestite con folta e robusta vegetazione lungo le pareti, arredate con qualche radice che offra buoni rifugi. Se in gruppo, va messo in acquari da 250-300 litri con sistema di filtraggio molto buono o frequenti cambi di acqua. Non convive con piccoli pesci da branco ad esempio neon o rasbore, poiché le può scambiare per cibo vivo, invece è possibile la convivenza con Carassius Auratus, Piranha, Astronotus ocellatus e Amphilophus citrinellus, ovviamente in vasche molto grandi. Non è un pesce adatto agli amanti dei dettagli e dell aquascaping, poiché sposterà gli oggetti e farà delle buche a terra. Non c è differenza tra maschi e femmine quindi sarà difficile distinguerli, inoltre la riproduzione è impossibile da ottenere. E' un animale onnivoro e accetta un po’ tutti i mangimi; per mantenere la colorazione, richiede integrazione di mangimi coloranti e crostacei freschi o surgelati come krill, polpa di gamberetto o artemie saline, altrimenti granuli secco o larve di zanzara congelate, non disdegna verdure sbollentate.
