awesome scape! I'm new to the planted aquarium and trying to think of something cool to make with some height. how do you get your height without having the substrate so thick that it causes gas pockets? thanks

I'm currently scaping a 55gallon tank with petrified wood pieces that weigh up to 10 kg a piece. I had the same concern, so I got me some plastic gravelroster slabs (the ones you use so your gravel on the driveway doesn't spread too much) Cut to shape, layered them and glued them with a hot glue gun, cut them some more untill it hit the height I wanted and supported the rocks properly. At every layer I picked a bunch of pockets and filled those with styrofoam, taking into account that I don't create empty enclosed pockets. The unfilled holes I left are left aligned vertically and are poured in with cement to decrease boyuancy up to a level I felt comfortable with while also creating rigidity. I wanted to compensate a little for the weight of the stones, while not creating something that I had to glue down.

I will be covering the entire thing in epoxy to seal it and to make sure the rocks do not damage the contraption. Since I'm running a soil based aquarium, I took into account that all my terraces have adequate substrate depth to avoid anaerobic spots.

Since some of my stones could not properly be fixed due to them overhanging, I carefully drilled a few holes in the back which are fitted with plexiglass tubes which in turn will be tied to the "contraption" to secure them into place.

The entire thing will be placed inside the aquarium on a rubber mat to further help spread the weight.

While this may be going a bit far, I'm sure at least the egg-crate thing could be of help.
