ahh yes! that makes perfect sense now...I figured it must have been specific trade jargon used within the breeder and seller circles. Thank you for taking a minute to explain what that meant!
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 6 years ago
Line breeding is when you continuously breed a line to reinforce specific traits- for instance, with cherry shrimp, you would keep rebreeding the "best" males and females, and removing any wiht lesser coloration, in order to reinforce the vivid red coloration and increase opacity. For things like guppies, it can be tail shape or colors, for bettas it can be tail shape and color, etc.

I like cherrys, I have them in my 200L tank, but I noticed the population gets smaller and smaller. Just yesterday I've seen cardinal neon eating alive shrimp during exuviation, that's confusing. Should think about separate shrimp tank.. I've got danios, harlequins and neos in a tank, I thought they will not be predators for shrimp...

i wanted to start a shrimp tank and was wondering is distilled water was ok to use
Neon Tetra Aquarist
Neon Tetra Aquarist - 6 years ago
Dark Crow Well, distilled water has absolutely no nutrients and minerals in it, so without remineralizing it using products such a Salty Shrimp (its just a name, doesnt actualky have salt in it), your shrimp will die. If you use it to top off your water, then that is fine, but you cant just use distilled water. Good luck!

Abby c - 7 years ago
Would you have any idea on why my shrimp are suddenly getting sick and dieing? I use to have healthy happy shrimp that use to swim all over the tank and where brightly colored and suddenly they are getting sick and dieing and now I can only count about 15 shrimp, so much less than what I use to that always hide and a few have cloudy bodies.

Carbon needs to have the water circulated through it to be effective.
Abby c
Abby c - 7 years ago
It can? Will it still be able to filter everything? I might end up making my own little bubble filter for the tank and put some carbon in it, actually, do you know if putting a small container of carbon at the bottom of the tank or bag work as well. With my other tanks I have made my own bubble filter that I put carbon in, so I know that would work out, but I don't really need another filter there unless I switch out the sponge filter that I bought. .
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 7 years ago
+Abby c polyfilter can just be floated
Abby c
Abby c - 7 years ago
Okie dokie! didn't think about doing any of that, haha! I have a sponge filter running in the tank how could I use the chemical media polyfilter with them, or are they just for regular filters?
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 7 years ago
+Abby c run carbon, purigen, or the chemical media polyfilter and dose a little heavier wirh your water conditioner. Cut water changes down in amount
Abby c
Abby c - 7 years ago
ohh! Didn't think about that, will do. That is what I was mainly thinking it was, but now (with the use of some purified drinking water) I got it down to what it use to be, but they still aren't doing very well. (Its been about a week sense I got it down to normal) My tetras aren't doing as good either. What you suggest to do for the sick shrimpies?
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 7 years ago
+Abby c you can call the water ompaby and ask for a report. That increase in hardness is a big stressor as well.
Abby c
Abby c - 7 years ago
I've also notice that the water GH has gone from 7 to 13 drops in our house water, because I tested the house water too. How can I test for the extra chemicals? (It has gotten pretty cold here quite a few times and gone below freezing and it is about to again, burrr don't like cold weather if it doesn't involve snow!)
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 7 years ago
+Abby c check your water quality. Often as a response to winter weather, water companies will use extra chemicals

They would do fine in fw, honestly- not sure how well cherries do long term in brackish. I would imagine it would depend on if its low end or not. I have never done brackish, so am unsure and don't have any experience so am apprehensive to guess.

So the temp can go as low as 60F? A lot of sources say mid-uppers 70s. I have a small tank and my house gets down to mid-60s at night. I would rather not run a heater but I have one. Maybe the temp variation from night to day would hurt them? Advice?
jonstfrancis
jonstfrancis - 7 years ago
I wouldn't worry. I keep them and they breed and my tank gets that low in the winter months too. Just be careful with water changes with winter temperature water from the tap. Top up the bucket of fresh water with some boiled water but never from the hot water tap.

Maybe you missed mentioning it, maybe i missed it myself, people keep giving advice how they should not be put with other fish , because of the shrimplets safety. I have been keeping mine in two tanks along with cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras , juli coridoras , long fin ancistrus, cory panda. They keep reproducing very well, so i am not sure about the expertise , should you or should you not keep them with other smaller fish. What's your opinion Rachel?

Hi Rachael. Any idea what would cause cherry shrimp to completely lose their color? I purchased 6 for my office aquarium and 3 (or 4) of them have lost every trace of red and are now completely clear. I've googled this, but can't find a meaningful answer.
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 7 years ago
A lot of the neos are less colorful on the lighter substrate. I like to think of it as them being aware of their role in the food chain, and adapting to their environment to reduce visibility. Adding plants or a little leaf litter can help them to get more vivid.
stormet54
stormet54 - 7 years ago
+Rachel O'leary Light substrate was one of the reasons I found as the cause when I googled this. I didn't believe it. Now I guess I will. I have a light substrate like what you have in this video. Other than being clear, they appear to be healthy. Do you know if the blue, bumblebee, etc. shrimp will lose their color on light substrate?
Rachel O'leary

Thanks for the info--I keep reading conflicting info online about what TDS is ideal for RCS. Often ranges are listed as 50PPM - 200PPM. In my tank the TDS is usually between 220 - 320. Is my TDS too high? (Thank you again for your patience with all my questions--I've been researching mostly by myself for awhile now, and asking advice from my LFS, but I've made some mistakes, and there is a huge amount to learn. I'm pretty new to this hobby.)

Attach tights (panty hose I think they're called in the US) with an elastic/rubber band over the end of your siphon. This will help stop shrimp from being sucked up. Just be carefull and it'll be fine.

Have you successfully bred amano shrimp? I have a female that is carrying eggs. I've researched the matter and must say it's quite involved! I have a 5.5 gallon with a HMF filter powered by a 10 gallon whisper air pump. I also have an air stone to switch to if the HMF is too turbulent when they're first hatched. The air line is split off to a valve to let out air as necessary to control turbulence. Instant ocean salt and a hydrometer so to not go over 35 ppt. Any pointers?

+LowTech Tank They are a great introductory shrimp, as they are very stable compared to newer color forms. I have customers breeding them in basements where its in the low 60s, and customers out west who are keeping them in mid 80s. If doing warmer temps, make sure there is adequate oxygen exchange (bubble output from the filter).

Rachel O'leary - 8 years ago
+1deaver Good question, they are omnivorous- so the pick and graze at most things including algae, fish foods, etc. A well balanced pellet is generally best in the aquarium, as it is very easy to overfeed these guys. Feeding dishes are a great idea to prevent broken food from going into the substrate, which can lead to secondary pests like planaria or hydra- who can be fatal to shrimp.

thank you so much,I have 20 long with sand and plants just waiting for me to order some shrimp.I keep hearing I need a mature substrate , should I add some fish to aid this ?thing is my pH is 8.4 and my watter is liquid rock.I have a limited budget and living in extreme drought community so rodi is off the table both financially and ethically
your stock list is pretty amazing me and Google were checking it out last night
Damion Markham
Damion Markham - 8 years ago
+Rachel Oleary Wow thank you so much . I am using a small aqua clear hob I ran on my big tank for a couple months with a sponge filter on the intake . I think the tank is cycled it's been running a month or more and tested o o then almost o .I never added any ammonia so I'm not shure if it's really cycled
I've been thinking of doing weekly water changes with 5 gallons of machine water witch tested 7.5,I'm concerned the machine at the market won't be consistent and give me pH swings
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 8 years ago
+Damion Markham A mature tank- one of the tricky things of having a higher pH tank is that ammonia becomes exponentially more toxic as the hardness increases, this means you have to be SUPER careful that your tank is cycled. Adding media (or decor) from an already established tank is one strategy. Another alternative is to use a media like Polyfilter (not floss, but the chemical media) which both adsorbs and absorbs, changing color to show what it is filtering out. This can also aid with fluctuations in a smaller tank. Luckily, shrimp do best with smaller more frequent water changes than larger ones, so can do well in an area where water conservation is extremely important.
Eugenio Vazquez
Eugenio Vazquez - 8 years ago
Just purchased your book love it.
I like when you talk about your work, I got some cherry shrimp in the past , but they always die in my tank but the Amano shrimp always live , can you give me some of vice
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 8 years ago
+Eugenio Vazquez Make sure the tank is well mature, shrimp in general are very sensitive to parameter changes (especially cycling). Small tanks can make this even more difficult because of the low volume. Be cautious not to overfeed, as the shrimp graze constantly and water can foul easily. Buy from a reputable source that quarantines, as well.
