DIY Aquarium Fish Bridge

This DIY was done purely because I saw a similar video with a bridge made from glass, and I wanted to do a smaller version made with clear pvc piping. Please check out these guys channels: Chefcoop69 Cooper - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHqoxLYJD0c Robert Reese - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdCu71puMTM The materials I used for the bridge: 50mm pvc pipe, 4 x 90 degree pvc elbow joints. Aquarium safe silicone, a saw, fine sanding paper, pipe braces and a knife The materials I used for the corner filter pump: An old corner filter (take out all the inner parts), Filter pad, a pond pump (60 liter per hour). larger piping that fits onto the pump (about 40cm long), a drill (To drill a hole into the plastic corner filter), an old spray bar that came extra with a canister filter from my other tank, and a few suction cups and zip ties.

You need a bigger tank period, and it looks like you’re putting goldfish with guppies, do not do that, that is a horrible idea, goldfish are better with their own kind, get a bigger tank for both of the breeds or don’t own fish at all
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Alexis Graystorm read my comments to the others with regards as to why I did the project. Not a single fish in either one of the tanks stayed together after this video. All the fish are still alive, have bred and are living in ponds in my garden... I have kept fish for most of my life, have studied Nature conservation and has no wish to harm any living animal. Please read some of my other replies and if you want to have a look at the updated videos on how all my fish are doing.

...and move your thumb out of the way of the saw!!! As I am typing this you take the box cutter out and forcefully push it towards your hand. How often do you go to the emergency room?
Hans Tun
Hans Tun - 7 years ago
Those blades snap off (if you have one that does obviously but this is like 99% of box cutters) and the new, fresh and super sharp box cutter comes thundering at 90mph in what ever direction you were pulling it. It can do a lot of damage... and don't ask how I know this!!! :)

This is the only book I could find on Aquaponics that had solid reviews [Check Details Here  >>> fb.com/EasyAquaponicSystems/app/137541772984354 ]. I hadn't started my own Aquaponics set-up yet, but am extremely interested in doing so.I wanted something that would help me understand all of the systems required, how to plan a build, and what to expect once it's set up. "Aquaponic Gardening" did a good job of answering all of the first round of questions I had.

I'm wondering. what's the point in the bridge. also the water is flowing in one direction so how do the fish get back into the other tank. seems like eventually all the fish would be in the other tank

Liaan Lategan thanks for answering. I may have to make one of these
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Hi Chris thanks for your comment. In my opinion the point to the bridge is to 1- Enlarge the water body so that more fish could live together 2- Water quality is easier to manage because the water body is larger 3- The bridge makes the fish interact with their surrounding more and their home becomes more interesting. The flow of the water is not that strong, I also mentioned it in the video that it is directly correlated with the size of the return pump. Thus the bigger the pump the stronger the flow of the bridge. In nature fish naturally swim up stream and for this bridge that I have built, neither the fish nor the shrimps I had in there afterwards had any problems swimming up stream. So to answer the statement that eventually all the fish would end up in one area, nope, they come and go as they please and I firmly believe the bridge makes their home more entertaining, natural and healthier for them. Hopes that answers all of your worries ;)

He should have used clear piping instead of being frugal and buying solid white PVC piping. You want to see the fishing using the entire bridge, not just the clear pipe at the top. If I had to rate your bridge, I'd give it a C-, mainly because it does work but, you only benefit from seeing 33% of the bridge in use & it looks tacky & thrown together.
My suggestion would be to trash your first attempt and spend whatever is necessary to construct an actual clear aquarium fish bridge from one aquarium to another and make it look pleasing to the eye. That way you will benefit from viewing the fish utilizing the entire bridge.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Prince, I respect that, I checked the video out and that looks amazing! I think I should do a new fish bridge video in the near future. Have a great day, and thanks for pushing me to make a better bridge ;)
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Prince Leigh not sure if you are adressing me or your fan base here, but ill answer your comment none the less. First off if you watched the whole video you will hear why I did not use clear tubing for the whole bridge. It also stresses out a fish if they are swimming up or down the pipe and they can see around them, but cant move around. They feel trapped. The white pvc pipe helps to darken the bridge and give them shelter. It was not built to look aesthetically pleasing, nor get A+ marks from random people. I built it solely to see if I can do it and if the theory will work in practice. It worked and thus I removed it, swapped the fish out for shrimp and it also worked for them. It is now working in my garden between two ponds, thus enlarging the ponds for the fish there. But hey, thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment.

Hi,
Need ur expertise.
I have just made a DIY CO2 generator today with citric acid(200mg in 600ml h2o)+baking soda(200mg in 200ml).
Its been almost 16hours now after the set up,but the water level in citric acid bottle has finished.
And I had shut down the regulator flow meter before sleeping, yet the CO2 pressure gauge shows more than 1.
Need to know whats happened for the water level to drop and what are consequences with this much pressure in the bottles.
I am running 2bub/sec.
Is this normal to finish the citric acid water level to get empty?

Catherine Kennedy Thanks, I now have it in between two ponds (you can see a recent video I made on the updates) I have a few apple snails in the ponds that are great at cleaning it, but once a month I take it out and clean it with a sponge attached to a magnet. that worked well but I recently tried a sponge attached to a rope that I just pull through a few times, and. that works really well.

Jonas Z nope no freezing at all, but we have massive temperature shifts in a short period of time. From 25 degrees in day time to 5 at night, and I have lost fish in the past, so tried to play it safe. Will try a diy heating project this year for. our winter time.

When you were sucking air from the pipe didn't you suck any water from the tank
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Experiment 626 eventually when there is no more air to suck, you will suck out some of the water, but that is the time you remove the pipe. The water will then remain in the bridge because of the vacuum you created when the water "replaced" the air in the bridge.

En so baie luister nie.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago
Ek sal my volgende video maak oor dit.
Johan van der Werff - 7 years ago
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 7 years ago

100. comment for DIY Aquarium Fish Bridge

DAWOOD PARKER
DAWOOD PARKER - 8 years ago
well done on the video boet...an im proud that my fellow south africans sharing there experiences.i say the following with all good feelings but for future reference do you think it would be better to rather work on any DIY projects away from fish to not stress them out regardless of the tank being an experimental tank.also to give time for materials to dry properly before usage.but thank you iv subscribed an looking forward to other videos.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Thanks man, yeah that is a valid point. Was my first attempt at a water bridge, and I was super curious to see if it worked or not. All fish are doing well, and most are in breeding tanks now. (Except for the goldies, they are having a Royall time in the pond). Thanks for the sub, will definitely be thinking about a whole lot of things before I tackle my next DIY. :)

Well.... okay... in a way, but what is the object of this clumsy 'project'?
Seems almost pointless.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
inside outside upside downside increase the water volume, maximise filtration and have a diffirent approach to the aquarium hobby than what othets have. This was just a quick diy project to show people how they can make their tanks more interesting. If you dont like it, then dont do it, simple as that.

That's got to be the most ridiculous fish tank, somewhat invention I have ever seen. My heart goes out to those gold fish surviving in such a microscopic tank. You got a lot of books on wildlife maybe you should check some books on aquatic life!

Hey awesome stuff , i got a question about the water bridge , I did the same set up as yours i am running a canister filter in Tank A and it spray bar in the Tank B to cycle the water , my problem is it only flows one way and the current is too strong for the fish to swim. I even turned the filter off and it just flows one direction From tank A to B the current is to strong , How do i get a slow water flow in the bridge, Thanks heaps .

P.s
The Spring bok rugby team are awesome, from an All Black Supporter .

Cheers Bro
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Hi Albert, thanks for the comment. I would get a splitter just after the pipe leaves the canister filter, and allow the one pipe to flow back into the first tank. That way the flow is reduced and the cycle will be not as strong. Alternatively you can get a flow adjuster before the spray bar (But that will hamper the amount of water that needs to flow through your filter). Hope that helps.

+Liaan Lategan (The Wild wonders of SA) makes sense like your video though good job keep it up.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Jip that is understandable. I also do my general maintenance on the pond. That is why I take the goldies out, and keep them in another tank for a day or two. I take out all the water in the pump, clean it out, and make sure I clean out all my filters. Outdoor ponds and aquariums fairly quickly get hair algae. But yeah obviously our winters are not nearly as harsh as yours, but we do get massive fluctuations here. One day it can be around 45 degrees C and then the next day you are looking at around 10. So I made the decision to take them out and house them indoors when I build this project. I have lost goldies because of weather fluctuations before. ;)

how's about having a bridge into the same tank? would you need to circulate the water? or maybe position the filter outlet so it points directly at one end of the bridge? sufficient?
Steve
Steve - 8 years ago
John Taylor hmm...I see..and you've got me at it now ha ha....I have that sort of tank with extra separate lid along the back made of plastic..I've had a piece of smoke glass cut to size and leaving a square near each end for the bridge to enter and exit the other side. currently cutting more glass to make the cube shaped bridge. I've a feeling its gonna be a head turner.

my LFS told me to "Not believe everything I read" when I told them my space limitations for my goldies. And these are like my friends who work at this LFS and theyve been in the business for over 20 years as well as having tanks personally, and they give me discounts on stuff cuz they know my financial situation, so if anything itd be to save me money, but I dont know where they got their measurement education from
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Awesome stuff! I hate it when pet-shops only want to try and make a sale ans sell those awful bowls with the goldies. I do however use a fish-bowl but for a different reason.I use it in my pond,as a lookout point for my fish. Made a video about that also,if you are interested.
SalamiLlama
SalamiLlama - 8 years ago
I totally agree with you, good to see someone making fish education videos who actually knows stuff about fish. My parents laughed at me when I told them my goldies needed at least 15 Gallons each. Still cant convince them they do, but i got a big tank now anyways.
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
No problem, I love my fish, and I also get upset when people put fish together that may harm one another. This video was only made to show the fish-bridge work. It has now become a Shrimp-bridge as I personally believe the tanks are way too small to keep any size fish in it. Have a look at my fish bridge update video. ;)

Shyren How about you stop being an animal abusing cunt? They have a large bioload even as babies, and it's less of a cost to just get the 55+ gallons up front. If you have a goldfish in a 5 gallon for any amount of time it will slowly poison itself. Get your facts right before you comment, rude ass.
Shyren
Shyren - 7 years ago
Squishybum it's not wrong when you first get them. It's true that when they do grow to be that big they need 55 gallons. But when you first get them they only need about 5 gallons per fish. Stop being a bitch (:

WRONG. Common and comet goldfish can reach 1 foot in length and require 55 gal for 1, both due to size and massive bioload. Stop spreading misinformation

How cold do winter temps get in South Africa?
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Fish and Minecraft, it all depemds on the area in Southe Africa. Closer to the Drakensberg mountains easily below 0 degrees. and when you go up north its nive and warm. Where I stay it rarely goes below 12 degrees, but the water temperature unfortunately drops at night way too rapitly and thats what killed my fish. Summer time I have no problem keeping tropicals in a pond. Winter time I just catch them and house them indoors.

I bet they will be using it lots when they get used to it. You cold make one side the kitchen.. and they have to come over to eat lol
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
Fish are much smarter than what people believe! What if you made the banks of the river a little bit more inaccessible? Making them steep or at an angle where the cat cant reach to the waters edge?
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl - 8 years ago
The kitchen would show just how smart they are. I have a fry grow out tank.. the way it sat at the time I always fed in the one corner. They always went to that one corner anytime I was around.. they are smart! I have the water fall recycling the water through a filter system but it would be cool to have a river. My cat fin killed a gold fish today and I know it would be too easy for him to eat them all with a river. :(
Liaan Lategan
Liaan Lategan - 8 years ago
The pond - river idea is an awesome idea to get "fresh" water in, but you might lose some fish, but if it is a water "feature river" that could definitely work! I really like the idea of creating a "kitchen" for them, that will definitely work. :)
