Bamboo is NOT an aquatic plant that's why I ask. You can have the bottom part in the water but the top part has to be out of the water.

Hello, why did you call your video "Fishtank Evolution"? Don't you know that "Evolution" is only a theory ( it's yet to be proven a fact, and I may add will never be proven ) and that "Evolution" if it were real, is the progressive transformation of any biological thing into a more sophisticated type. Your tank was a "Creation" since it had a "Creator" which is you... you created different designs based on your own desires and taste. That's how life was created, by a "Creator", God.

What is the plant you have floating at the surface? I have a tank going with lucky bamboo (tops emersed) and I thought the plants you have floating would look really nice and make a good surface cover for my betta. I was going to go with duckweed but your choice looks much prettier! Thanks. :)

fishkillernomore
fishkillernomore - 12 years ago
@imlostagainWTF It's from E-Bay. It looks different because the lotus flower he is sitting on is buried under the sand. Also he's not completely white (it was originally clean white). I sanded him down a bit, then applied ceramic stain (black) then wiped and scrubbed the excess off to give him an aged look.

@Kingfatboyrsr09 Yes they're real plants, no I dont have to take them out when I clean the tanks. I do a mini-siphon to clean the debris between plants so it doesnt disturb them that much.
fishkillernomore
fishkillernomore - 12 years ago
@nova72asu washed them in hot hot hot water then sun dried them for a long time. It held up for 6 months before I had to replace them. They'll get moldy eventually and needs replacing, but drying them properly lets you keep them longer.
fishkillernomore
fishkillernomore - 12 years ago
@fuzzyfishable I think the best way to grow plants well is to pick the ones that are compatible to your water in the first place. I've had plants that, no matter the amount of fertilizers, good lighting and CO2 injections, still died because it wasn't compatible with my water chemistry. Good starter plants are anubias, ferns (java, windelov, philippine etc, but stay away from lace for now) and some mosses.
nova72asu

LiliFromHali
LiliFromHali - 13 years ago
@famousstunners lol, just joking. It depends on the type of plant, really, because some need a special substrate, or CO2 diffusers, or special chemicals that need to be added for nutrients, or special types of lights. The easiest plant to start with is java moss, imo, because you just need to tie it to rocks with a fishing line and it will grow in any type of light (as long as it's on for 7-8 hrs/day). Plus, it doesn't need any nutrients or anything, since it's fine with just fish poo.

@feenin4u247 with fake plants, or with rocks and twigs, sure! But definitely no live plants, your turtles will eat them. Just use decor that are heavy/big enough that they cannot uproot/topple it over.

Liquid fertilizers and fertilizer tablets. My substrate's not as fancy as some hard planted tank geek's substrates lol. But most importantly, if you pick the proper plants for your water type, then you should have no problem growing them. (ie. pick soft water plants if you have soft water, hard water plants if you have hard water. Soft water plants will melt and die if you have hard water. Same goes for hard water plants in soft water.).
fishkillernomore
fishkillernomore - 14 years ago
I dont see any reason why would it not be able to take the water pressure. If it were a reptile tank, then you might have a problem since their glass is usually thinner than fish tanks.

It will rot eventually. Anything organic that you place in water for a long time will rot. The trick is how to prepare the bamboo sticks so that they last longer and does not foul up your water. My bamboos lasted me almost 5 months (if I remember it correctly) before I had to replace them with new ones.

Those are maple leaves. Boil them first to kill bacteria and release most of the tannins. Boiling also makes them sink. The maple leaves are mainly for decor, but other leaves like indian almond leaves and oak leaves are used by other betta keepers as water conditioners.
