Fluval Edge 6 gallon: Unboxing and Setup

Fluval Edge 6 gallon: Unboxing and Setup Want one? Here is a link http://amzn.to/2d9SO4A A co-worker decided to buy the Fluval Edge and I agreed to set it up for him. Since it was all new in the box I went ahead and made an unboxing and set up video. So if your curious about the 6 gallon version of the edge check it out. You can only have so many aquariums so it was nice to put this together for him. It will sit a whole 6 feet from my office so I will get to enjoy it and bring you updates on it as well. Note this is the older version of the Edge and I do mention that.

What is the difference between plastic and glass? I heard that plastic or acrylic tanks weigh less than glass ones. Also how many fish can a 5 or 6 gallon tank hold. I like this tank, but I agree with some of the other posters. The opening is very small. I am looking on getting a small tank and I do not know which way to go glass or acrylic. I also like that 5 gallon fluval tank you set up in another video.

Hi Pecktec, Thanks for posting this video on maintenance for the Fluval Edge 12 gallon. I just set one up a couple weeks ago and have been adding some low-moderate light plants: Anubias and Java Fern on driftwood, and Undulata planted in fluorite (the only substrate I used in this system). I wanted to add some floating plants (wisteria and dwarf water lettuce) and have kept the water level below the top glass -- do you think enough light will reach across the entire top surface for these floating plants?

I had one of these tanks a few years ago and loved the look... but, the opening truly is a pain. I would suggest using your hands instead of a "tool"... hehe. BUt, that's me. Maintenance is not as fun with the opening and the lights do die. I like your LED idea much and if I ever get another, which I probably will do, I'll definitely get LEDs. Nice video though and very nice landscaping.

Fluval needs to remake this tank with either a bigger opening length and width wise or make the tank with a removable lid for aquascaping, water changes and floating the bags with the fish inside so the water in the bag can reach the same temp as the water in the tank. All in all, it's a nice looking tank.

I have recently been watching tons of planted aquarium/unboxing videos because I'm obsessed with planting my aquarium and Betta fish! Currently my parents won't allow me any live plants for my Betta. We got one once and, according to my mother, it caused an outbreak of these little things (I know they were just part of the tank's cycling, they looked like little worms) and yes we washed the plant before putting it in. I would love a Betta sorority and that's probably what I'm going to spend my birthday money on this month (July bday). Sorry if it's too much information but I love this tank and setup! Do you think this tank would be good for 5-7 bettas (aka a Betta sorority!)? Thanks! Love your videos!
pecktec
pecktec - 8 years ago
I would do a bit bigger tank for that many. The little worms were not from the plants they pop up naturally. Normally the fish will eat them and they cause no harm. Look at my Aquarium plants for beginners video for some that are real easy to grow plants.

Be sure you prime the pump by adding water in the top where it comes in. The only moving part is the impeller sometimes if you get grit in there you can pull it out and wipe it down. It's magnetically attached so it just pulls out.

I hear ya. The elastic is temporary. It breaks after a week or two. Just long enough to hopefully get the plants to attach. Of course there are lots of other ways to attach now. Including glue oddly enough. Flourish makes a supper glue especially for it.

Kelley G
Kelley G - 8 years ago
+Palle M. Christensen NO
pecktec
pecktec - 8 years ago
+Palle M. Christensen every betta I have ever owned is better off in the well planted clean and cycled tank I provide for them. As opposed to the Tupperware they were sold in. A betta in the wild may have 50 gallons of water to live in. A totally arbitrary number that is not necessarily accurate. But that 50 gallon is shallow, and may be full of other living things. That means it will stake out a few feet of water and never leave it. There is a certain point where they can be in to big a tank. A 55 for example is way to deepThe plants make a huge difference in the quality of the water. So a well planted 2 gallon is just as good as a 5 with fake plants. The true test of fish happiness (if one assumes they can determine this) should be determined but spawning readiness. If the betta is bubblenestimg he's probably ok. And to your original post. Shrimp need a much bigger tank. 5 gallons is to unstable. Cherry shrimp may be able to deal with it. But most won't breed. That's my two cents.
Palle M. Christensen
Palle M. Christensen - 8 years ago
+Cody Well maybe but i still prefer to have larger tanks cuz then the fish has more space to move and chose where it wants its sort of territory to be. plus i can have more fish for them to interact with. Its more natural for the fish. I once had a goldfish in a 20 gallon and it would never move, the water was good and there were growing plants in the tank but it just looked depressed. When i moved it over to my homemade 80 gallon shallow ish tank it suddenly looked much much happier. Large aquariums don't have to be expensive either even if you don't build them your self, there are very cheap tanks on cregslist.
Cody
Cody - 8 years ago
+Palle M. Christensen many kinds of fish don't need anywhere near 50 gallons to be happy and healthy. i've even seen bettas in 0.5 gallon tanks that live to be 5+ years old, but we can both agree that's much too small for them to be happy. 5 gallons for a single betta, for example, is plenty. they will be happy and healthy in a tank that size.
Palle M. Christensen
Palle M. Christensen - 8 years ago
+Cody Honestly its all up to you but i think those guidelines are just put there so companies can sell smaller tanks and expand the market. Me personally if a fishes natural environment is 50 gallons at the minimum in the wild i won't put it in a tiny 6 gallon. And also a 50 gallon is not that large, for me i would call 50 and bellow a small tank. And around 80g is a medium. around 200g is a large. Anything above 300G is giant. The goal is not to give the fish enough space to move around in, you want to give it enough space to live in and a prison cage size is not enough space to live in all your life.
Cody
Cody - 8 years ago
+Palle M. Christensen that's pretty silly. 50 gallons is absolutely ludicrous for a betta. the widely accepted betta tank size is 2.5 gallons minimum and 5 gallons recommended, while everybody agrees that those tiny 0.5-1 gallon "betta" tanks at pet stores are cruel.
Palle M. Christensen
Palle M. Christensen - 8 years ago
+Cody Well in my opinion putting any fish, even a betta who's natural environment consists of pools that are 50 gallon at the smallest and then putting it in a 6 gallon tank is cruel.
Cody
Cody - 8 years ago
+Palle M. Christensen plenty of kinds of fish can live very happily in a 6 gallon tank lmao. those 0.5 gallon betta tanks? hell no. but 6 gallons? plenty.

It's not horrible the 12 is easier. You do have to plan for that when you lay it out though. More so than a regular tank.

hamneggwich
hamneggwich - 9 years ago
+pecktec I'm quite fond of the trick of catching fish immediately after turning on the lights after the tank has been dark for hours. Alternatively, keeping the tank dark(and the room) and using a red light source apparently works very well too. You can move the net slowly and carefully when you do this so you don't mess up plants/substrate and the fish are less likely to realise that the net is even there. Still a bit awkward with the smaller Edge access, but it might help :)
pecktec
pecktec - 9 years ago
Actually yea that is what you do. Still hard on an aquascape. Then again I have only had to pull a live fish out twice. I have to say the 12 gallon is loads better all around than the six.

don't know why ppl are saying this is easy to clean...

the small opening was the main thing that turned me off about this aquarium. To vacuum through it & replant the plants/rearrange all the messed up decorations afterward (plus catch the fish b4 vacuuming) each time you clean it looks like a total BITCH.

plus, magnet or no magnet..you still need a razor to properly scrub off algae from the tight corners--impossible to do w/this aquarium w/out spending hours for maintenance, sweating, & getting pissed off.

I have watched Several of your video's and you often use more than one kind of substrate, this tank you only used the Eco-Complete Substrate, Can you effective grow plants  with just the Eco-Complete, or do you need the others as well ?  I have always had fish tanks but I have always used fake plants I want to start a tank with real plants so watching your video's are very informative. We are replacing our daughter tanks, which is in her bedroom. We were sold a tank that only has a air pump, no filter at all (even though they said it was) and her plecs "spook and kirk" died :(   As we need the tank to go in her bedroom, just how quiet is the Fluval. On your clips (which are great) I cant hear any noise? We would be grateful if you could let us know, before we invest. Many kind regards Lizzie (UK)
Elizabeth Grace

Fluval equipment is almost silent, but you need to watch the water height to make sure it doesn't dip too low. That's when it begins to be noisy. Just remember to do your weekly 25% water changes and you shouldn't have that problem.

I was planning on switching to this tank, but find that because of the small opening, and that you can't open the actual "top" of the tank can get infuriating trying to aquascape. Is there another aquarium that is similar but offers more space at the top to put both your hands in and really get in  there... Sorry that was confusing.

I purchased one of these about a year ago. Like you said in one of your other videos: it is very hard to maintain and capture fish because of the tiny opening on top. You have a larger version (which is taller, in your other video) and that one is probably easier than the 6 gallon Fluval to get a net into.

I find it so frustrating to get a normal sized net to maneuver around this tank! I also found the filter's waterfall disturbing my substrate because of the low profile (especially when the water level decreased).

Lastly, the "old" version of lightbulbs, are actually quite dangerous. They get VERY hot and I found myself accidentally burning myself when I would lift the hood for maintenance.

They are very cheap, as you said, I got mine on sale for $100 I think.

They must have some great deals where you are. I know the point your trying to make although I think its a bit exaggerated. The point I'm making is that its a unique tank. Whether that's a good think or not is debatable. Not for you that's fine but this wasn't made for someone, who say would rather have a 125. Its a small artsy tank for a small with a unique shape.

pecktec

Most wood will stain the water for a period of time. Soaking it helps but it would have to soak for a long time. I just let it go it doesn't hurt anything. It can even be helpful for the fish. The piece of wood n this tank had already been in an aquarium for a long time and didn't stain much at all.

It can be but mostly because you don't ever want to skip a week of water changes. If things go bad they go bad pretty quick. But that being said all I ever do is scrape the glass trim plants back and change 20% of the water. so about 10 minutes a week.

I think the glass on top could be confusing. And the water is turbulent at the opening because the filter is there. So bettas won't be happy trying to get to the surface.

It's had some wicked algee growth. I'm not maintaining it ( it's a coworkers). I may have to film a make over.

Awesome video. Is this a good tank for a betta? I have my betta in a 3.5 gallon tank and I'd love to get him into something bigger. This tank just looks too cool to pass up. Opinions? and thanks!

if you add cold tap water do you add the chemical that said tap water thing to into the tank after you filled it up or put it into the water before you filled it[the jug or tub]

Love it! I bet Spencer does too! Looking forward to the update and seeing the fish, etc. I am really enjoying my Edge but have learned I have to be part contortionist to do much of anything through that little hole. Thanks for another great video with good tips. I posted a brief and very amateur video of mine if you'd like to take a look.

i oddly found some of this Lace Java Fern at my local petsmart today while i was picking up some cat food and bird seed for my feeders. Was in the plastic tubes supplied by Top Fin. So i got 2 healthy plants of it. :)

pretty cool and i never have been told that fact about Java Fern before. No pet store or planted tank youtuber has ever mentioned that if you bury that part it will rot. Thank you for the knowledge.
