HOW TO: DIY NANO aquarium HIGH power LED light | TonyTanks

After trying out all types of lighting, I finally decided to try out the growing popularity of LEDs. Thought they were really expensive so I never really looked into it, to my amaze they were really cheap and I was able to complete this lamp with less than 40$. The main problem with LEDs is that they heat up ALOT, but by using a simple L-shaped aluminium profile, some thermal paste and a 4$ computer fan, this problem ceased to exist. LED drivers are extremely useful as LEDs require constant current rather than constant voltage. The LED driver was, by far, the most expensive piece in the whole set-up, rounding up to about 15$. You can make a DIY LED driver with a voltage regulator and a resistance but it will never be as good and I decided to avoid the problem. I decided to use the color sequence, shown in the video, to distribute the three colors of light as best as possible throughout the aquarium. Blue light will help to grow plants tall and strong while red light will help to grow them small and dense. This aquarium has some light demanding carpeting plants so I went with the max amount of light I could use in this small 10gal NANO aquarium. I know the watts per gallon rule isn't really good for measuring LED light in an aquarium, but in such a small tank I decided to go with it. I applied a 1.5-2 watts of LED light per gallon rule, which sums up to 15-20 watts for a 10gal. This lighting system has 7 3w LEDs (21w). In Lumen terms: Each White LED is about 220 lm, each Blue LED is about 24 lm, each Red LED is about 67 lm. This sums up about 995 lm. The light turned out to work perfectly, plants start pearling almost immediately after I turn it on, the fan keeps the heat sink (aluminum profile) at a really cool level and it makes no sound at all. The shrimp in the tank haven't been affected by the light change and the plants look better each day.

That is a constant current driver correct? Does it hook straight into the LEDs with no resistors etc.? This would be way different with constant voltage power supply i assume. But is a constant current led light as simple hooking the leds straight to the power supply? If so, that is awesome.

It's not that hard. Just wire the LEDs in series, plus to negative, plus to negative etc etc then plus and negative in the driver correctly, add a switch, a plug and it's done.

Danielle Mendoza it's very simple to calculate how much light u require for your planted tank.. calculate the water in litres and check the output of light in lumens... 40< lumens per litre is bright light good for carpet plants

Nice video. Im about to do the same(in a way) waiting on my 100 leds from china. I would have mounted the fan blowing up though. Having it blowing at the water will cause added evaporation. Like the other poster said that falls in the water don't try and grab it. Not exactly electrically sound but neither are my gu10 setups. :)

Nick Groen
Nick Groen - 8 years ago
Look in the video @ 3:45. The lid is shown with a AC adapter on top. A few seconds further in the video the underside of the lid is shown. If I see it correctly the AC input is on the right, from there there are wires going to the AC adapter on the left. Those wires are directly connected to the contacts of the ac adapter with some electrical tape around it. I my opinion this is playing with your life! Think about it when the lid drops in the water by accident and someone try's to catch it by reflex. Instant electrocution.

Again. those leds are fully safe with their low DC voltage. Just keep the 220v or 120v AC (depends where you life) to 12v DC conversion far away from water.

Could you explain why? I am keen on a similar rig....
John Prado

You should have used a stainless steel heatsink (Finned) then run a stream of water over the heatsink. With the Led's underneath and possibly water resistant. Allowing for direct water cooling (no fan). And a cool water fall. lol

Great. I have tried this before I could watch this video. but I did not use the aluminium and the fan so it heatsupomy LED's are dimming after 4weeks(6-8hours/day) is that because of the heat?
good goat
good goat - 8 years ago
+james jamie   If the LEDs are seeing more current than what they were designed for the life will be shortened. They get dimmer over time and higher current levels shorten the life and accelerate the dimming.

So basically if I use 10 10w LED matrix bulbs I just need to run them in series with a 100w Driver -- and of course use burly heat sink. Or -- would I run them in Parallel with the 100@ driver? I'm a bit confused.

I am a complete Electrical newbie. At 2:30 you said to solder a piece of wire. What kind of wire. Also I presume it also must be some type of insulated wire?
What would be your ultimate recommendation for growing aquarium plants emersed (out of water)?

@TonyTVTanks
Great build, do you have any later pics of the tank, after letting it go for a while? Is it still running?
Only potential flaw i can see is the relatively large fan, as it will increase evaporation a lot, and also be quite noisy.
Was that a random pick or did you measure running temperatures and this was the smallest one to keep the LEDs cool enough?
Also, is that 220v/110v going into the hood? if so, why not keep the power wart outside and avoid the risk of having live current so close to water?

+Osumo Ben Lodan I am also colorblind, and i get asked that all the time.

We see colors just like you, but we cant tell the difference between them. Its more like color stupid, than color blind.

Side by side of two different colors looks different, but show us the same colors one at a time, and we think its the same color as before.

Weird I know, but it does suck not being able to be an electrician, or become a pilot, or a designer.

i tried this and it worked.. but i only have one small problem or rather it is a big one.. the aluminium heat sink is carrying the same volt of current and i am not able to figure our where this is coming from. I dont see any Positive wire touching the heatsink. Is it because i need to give another Earthing wire attached to the heat sink? Will it solve the problem...
TX Aquatics
TX Aquatics - 9 years ago
+Roby Mathew Check your wiring LED to LED, a bare wire must be touching the heatsink. I checked the voltage on my heatsink when lights are on and it is zero. Also maybe your thermal paste did not insulate enough.....

It would be "easier" if you used Artic Alumina adhesive for the mounting (thermal compound and adhesive in one...) and pre-soldered your LEDs (The heat-sink's making it waaaay harder to get a clean good solder join...) but nicely done all the same.

Frank Earl
Frank Earl - 9 years ago
It would be if you'd use the 10k white along with a couple of blues.  The red's not usable much and most commercial LED setups don't bring in any red spectrum unless you're talking a lizard light or a grow bulb.
The 10k white by itself will work for many things, but not a reef tank.  Too much white, even then.

i would choose a driver with some extra resources. it will give you more room to play and the led´s are still just drawing what they need in watts.

+HeySlowPokes What are you talking about ? Placing LEDS over fish do not arm them more than placing an habitual neon. The light runs at 60Hz like the neon so our eyes do not see it flash while in fact the lights flashes. Fish do not see this also and for the fish, you could have no light at all and that would have been fine too, just house lights. We are using this type of lights for low power consumption and performance on aquarium plants for the overall beauty of the tank.
