To properly house a turtle, you'd need a tank wider than the 12" he suggests here, and you need a SERIOUS filter. Turtles make a mess like you would not believe, and water quality will quickly become an issue.

How does one clean this style filter - especially if you use it with substrate? And how often on a typical 55 gallon?
MELODY MUNRO
MELODY MUNRO - 8 years ago
+Greg Sanders I have been running one of these in my 40 gallon planted for at least 5 months now...when I do my weekly water change I siphon from the rear of the filter and that sucks up the stuff sitting at the bottom..I have also run the siphon over the front and given the foam a bit of a vacuum - there is now java fern growing on mine and it has a pretty decent coating of algae, but this filter seems to be more effective at keeping the tank balanced now than what it was in the start...it has become in one sense a living wall of bacteria...I have no plans to clean mine but instead want to see what happens with the plants and the system as it ages further...it does not handle small pieces of detritus that well - for that I have put a small HOB on the tank...but my HMF is only using the airlifts with an air pump...if you put something stronger behind it then the detritus probably would get dealt with..overall, I am happy with my HMF..cheap to run and norw that it is green and covered in plants you don't really notice it....and the fish seem to enjoy it too..they spend a fair bit of time eating the algae off it...

Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 9 years ago
Hi Joey I'm going to use this method to filter my discus breeding tank. It's 20 gallons and 2ft long. My reasoning for doing it is because I believe it will take less room than my sponge filter and I can put the heater behind it as well. This gives my Discus more room to breed. Great care and detail on this one Joey. Thanks.
Ps. The foam I'm using is 1 inch thick, is that ok? or is more needed?

Hi i have a question , will this be enough for a 55 Gallons aquarium with 2 Turtles? Because they poop a lot and uneaten food get really messy haha
I have also another question , can i had some ceramic rings where you hide the heater ?
Ivan Freely
Ivan Freely - 8 years ago
+Adrien Veres
Regarding your second question, yes. It's probably best to have those ceramic rings in a porous bag. Cheap panty hose from Walmart (or the dollar store) would do the trick.

Looked into this yrs ago after i gave up my wild gibberosas....
The way i looked at it was to silicone two pieces of glass an inch wide then width of the sponge.
I actually put 2 pieces on the back of the aquarium and two pieces on the side to curve the sponge....
Then possibly hide the sponge with plants.....

But dont knock the hamberg as it works..
Experiment with it......

you can get a better flow of water with a 45 degree angle on the PVC tube behind the sponge.  Also one of the best filters for shrimp tanks.

"square linear inch" wtf is that
breakspirit
breakspirit - 10 years ago
+The King of DIY™ (Aquariums)
I googled PPI to get a better understanding.  Looks like it is simply linear inches.  So, if you shot a 1 inch line through the foam, you'd hit some number of pores.  That's what PPI is.  I think I had assumed it was pores in a cubic inch of material.
The king of DIY
The king of DIY - 10 years ago
+breakspirit Thanks... but still not talking about that. I replied with the word PLUS. not TIMES. A square linear inch is MUCH smaller than a cubic inch. A CUBIC inch is 1" X 1" X 1" and a square linear inch is 0.33"+ 0.33 + 0.33". If it was a cubic shape, its sides would all be 0.33" and not 1".  With that said, the math is already done for you as the sponge will already be rated. I was just explaining what the rating meant in the video.
breakspirit
breakspirit - 10 years ago
+The King of DIY™ (Aquariums)
That would be cubic inches, or volume.  Good video buddy.

Hello Joey,
Im doing this for my guppy breeder tank! Anyways i have a questiom. in a few months im building a turtle pond for my common snapping turtles and they are extremely messy. The pond will be roughly 250 gallons. Would you suggest i build one or buy one? If build one, could you point me to a video that would help? and if i should buy one, what would you recommend. Im not looking to blow the budget for a filter! Thanks for your time

Great video. I use these HMFs in all my tanks so my fishroom is driven by a single Alita pump pushing air through a PVC loop that goes around the room. Valves tapped into the PVC allow adjustments to the air flow for individual tanks. Very efficient and cost-effective system. Shrimp and snails love to pick at the sponge and fry stay in the tank. For increased tank flow I have the output running to the other end of the tank where needed. Thanks for highlighting this great filter option.

A powerhead is the best way to go. I have just set up my 90 gal tank this way and I also used the pump to feed a water fall that has a filter in it so the water gets filtered before it goes back in the tank. I am planning on doing the same think to my 125 tank as soon as it gets its fake rock design installed. You do very good work keep it up tank man.
ROBERT CAMMARATA
ROBERT CAMMARATA - 10 years ago
for my 90gal it's a 550 and the 125 is a 1000, the 125 is up and running and the water is very clean. cost was $35.00 for the 550 and $55.00 for the 1000.

Do you think the surface of this filter would be any good for providing food for young fry?  I am having problems rearing some species of whiptail fry and I think the problem is getting them to feed,  I wonder if once this filter is mature whether it might provide a source of micro organisms?  I would value your opinion on this.
