Ahhh, I love your aquarium so much! I'm a beginner with a 29 gallon, I have 2 Dalmatian Mollies, 2 Neon Tetras, 4 balloon Mollies, 2 blue ram chichlids, 4 multi colored guppies and 2 golden snails .... and I am COMPLETELY in love with all of them, doing my best to make sure I give them a good life. A few pretty snails would compliment your tank a lot but I have hear stories of them multiplying and ruining filters before. I hope I dont end up with that problem having a somewhat smaller tank. Anyways, enjoy your little guys... I'll be subscribing for updates

I would see if they school like that with all the lights off in the dark. If they do then maybe the red light triggers some night time ritual. If not my other guess would be that the red light some how makes them feel like their in danger and their running from it.

I don't believe the fish can see red! Or see it cry well, so I must believe that when you turn all the other spectrums down, you are turning "all" the lights for the fish, so they begin to school together for protection in the dark. You raise the lights back up, they can see, and they feel safe to begin swimming freely around the tank!

They bunch up for the red light because when blood is spilled in the water, it spreads and attracts more predators. They bunch up to hopefully deter predators and not get anyone killed.
Jason React
Jason React - 6 years ago
iToxicMuffin13
I was making the same connection about the water turning red, and the blood in the water too, but these fishes are still very young so them grouping up doesn't deters predators, because fishes predators tends to be waaay bigger than you. So When you huddle up or forming school in a mass, you're less likely to get single out by predators greatly increasing your chance of survival, because there are so many in your group.

the behaviour that the rainbow fish showed after you turn the lights red is their defense mechanism. Which happens every night and predators more likely to hunt. Their schooling just like sardines when threatened by predators like sharks

Many species of fish in both fresh and salt water have eyes which are incapable of seeing the red spectrum of light. So when joey changed the light to only shine with the red spectrum, the fish no longer saw any light and likely thought it was now night time. I assume that they naturally School together at night in the wild so when the fish stopped seeing light they simply did what they would naturally do. You could test this by turning the light off all together and you will likely see the same reaction as with only the red spectrum. Very nice tank though joey, I'm excited to watch those babies color up.
Sirus
Sirus - 6 years ago
That makes common sense to me but the scientific mind makes ponder.
If the males of this species show off to the girls with red. Does that mean the girls want a dark room to get together to talk about stuff and don't actually notice the male, in this case the male has now become invisible and created his own black hole to do his bidding, Or does the red skin/scales flourese another spectrum to make the girls notice?

Explanation for the schooling behaviour:
Fish can't see red light (since it is usually filtered out by the water (this is also the reason the sea is blue)), so when you only have red light, they can't see anything and think it's night time and school for safety.

Red light has the largest wave length compared to other colours, so perhaps the fish can't see the red light? If so, they would assume it's dark, making them instinctively huddle in groups for protection.

Sounds reasonable, but I don't know for sure. Anybody know how far up the visible light spectrum fish can see?

Love the tank. Rainbows are one of my alltime favorites. As for your red light question.. I have seen many different reasons in the comments from stress to cant see red( they can and very well).. its an anti-predation mechanism. Throughout the Rainbows native range most predatory fish are crepuscular and are most actively hunting at dusk and dawn when the visable light spectrum ranges between 460-700nm due to scattering of VIB light during these times. Yes thee ol' safety in numbers is at play.

I think I learned somewhere that fish can't see red light. If that is true, perhaps they are moving toward a light they see somewhere else in the room. Also wonder if they would respond same way in total darkness (sounds like a good reason to pick up some night vision goggles).

You did wrong when you acclimate the new Rainbowfishes !

You couldnt know the watervalues like PH, KH,GH etc in the transportwater...

You and the fish can be happy that the differents between your aquariumwater and the Bangkokk-transportwater was so little that the fish could survive the changes....

The transportbag must open, and a little piece of aquarium water takes in every 10-15 minutes... Under att least 4 times in 1 hour...
DMD Aquascapes
DMD Aquascapes - 6 years ago
Agreed. I think Tom maybe mixing up long haul shipping versus bring fish home from the pet store with relatively short in-bag time. Drop and Plop is definitely the way to go.
Mostlyharmless1985
Mostlyharmless1985 - 6 years ago
Tom Tvärtom you don't have to know the levels. I can tell them for you with no test required.
PH: acidic.
kH: crashed.
GH: no buffer at all
Ammonia: high locked as ammonium
Nitrate: Toxic
Nitrite: Toxic.

Cut and dump is the best method for fish. Any water that isn't the transport water will be better. The only thing you do by drip acclimating is hardening the water to unlock the ammonium to free ammonia, burning the fish and kill them.
DMD Aquascapes
DMD Aquascapes - 6 years ago
Doing it your way would kill more fish from ammonia burn and ammonia poisoning. Joey just explained the science behind his method. Have a look at Rachel O'Leary's channel as well, she has the same methodology for the same reasons.

The rainbow fish flock together because the red light is unnatural in their environment and therefore it triggers a flight response causing them to shoal together. Similarly to how zebras and other herding animals stick together, it's a common trait actually. After they discover that it isn't harmful to them, they will learn to ignore it. It is however, an exhilarating experience watching this behaviour and it heightens with the fact that it can be controlled with a simple touch of the finger.

Well, red is hard to see for many animals. So if you are leaving just the red it probably seem dark for the fish. The fish are probably schooling together in a tight area as a defense mechanism, especially since the tank is a new environment they don't know if there are any dangers, so just like in the wild, staying close together is a better defense
STANNY08
STANNY08 - 6 years ago
The fish behaviour with the red light is to do with fishes not seeing red light very well. So when you turn out all other coloured lights leaving only red lights, to the fish it is essentially darkness. Hence they gather together in defense from any threat in the darkness.

I love how their behavior is affected by the red light. Whatever the reason, you now have remote controlled fish! LOL! I wonder if they're seeking deeper water as "night falls" for them. Do they do that when it's completely dark too?

It's most likely because red isn't a color they can see, so when there is just red light it's dark to them so they all school into safety.

I think they actually gather like that because red tinged water signifies and injured animal- blood in the water. Therefore they know predators are coming, and their natural instinct is to gather together for protection.

the reason the fish group up together in darker light is because like most fish species they tend to stick together and close to some form of structure so they have sime protection from predators at night.

Hi, I'm sure this is a common question, but I could not find anything in your videos to address it ( I assume so because you make most of your own tanks haha), but what is a good brand of tank to buy? My brother loves to keep fish, but the last 2 tanks he has bough from petco have sprung leaks. He didn't tell me the name, but he said it was one of the cheaper ones that they sell. I don't mind buying him a more expensive tank, but I want to make sure it's a good one is I do. Thank you in advance!

Hi Joey, love your work and video's I'm a fan! But I have correction on what you said about the PH in the bags. It's not the use of the oxygen that lowers the PH but the CO2 created by the fish. When you open the bags the CO2 escapes from the bag and PH rises and then nontoxic ammonium NH4+ becomes the toxic ammonia NH3. So the CO2 produced by the fish are keeping them alive during transport, because this lowers PH and the toxic ammonia NH3 produced by the fish becomes the nontoxic ammonium NH4+. Just want to keep everybody informed correctly. For the chemistry freaks just Google 'ammonia ammonium ph'.
Mikayla Frost
Mikayla Frost - 6 years ago
Jeffrey Lasut i think he actually said what you said. Lol.
Jeffrey Lasut
Jeffrey Lasut - 6 years ago
Jon Nash I think depletion of oxygen and adding CO2 are two different things. I would agree if you say fish use oxygen en create CO2, but the usage of the oxygen it self isn't influencing the PH. Just another technicality, if all the oxygen is depleted I think the fish would die, due lack of oxygen. (Sorry Jon somehow I had in my head that you said depletion of all oxygen, but you didn't) Love these discussions, so if I'm wrong please correct me to ;-)
Jon Nash

You might be the King of diy, but you are the emperor of fish keeping. :)

Front Butt
Front Butt - 6 years ago
If you're referring to the 2 weeks as a quarantine time that's not necessary in this case. That's a rule to have when adding new fish to a tank that is already populated and established. Since this is a brand new tank with no other fish in it and all the fish came from the same place quarantine isn't necessary, any disease they might be carrying would spread through the population regardless of quarantine.
