Refilling our Bass Pond Expansion - Stocking the pond with Creek Chub

One week after filling the new expansion to our bass pond, we returned to find that it did not hold water to the level of the original pond - it had lost at least 1.5 feet in depth. It took the entire weekend pumping water from a nearby stream using two pumps to restore the depth achieved the week before. I was expecting a certain amount of water loss, but not this much. Hopefully, the disappearing water is due to loose, uncompressed soil and clay that makes up the berm. Only time will tell. If the new pond cannot match and maintain the same water level as the original pond, then I will not join the two ponds. Meanwhile, to test the quality of the water, and to satisfy our impatience, we captured at least a dozen small and medium-sized Creek Chub using a fish trap in the nearby stream, and released them into the new pond. Admittedly, we feel a little guilty transporting healthy stream fish to a new, untested stagnate environment and with no food source. So, to appease my guilt, I ordered a new Fish Mate automatic fish feeder thinking that at least the Creek Chubs will have something to munch on next week - providing they have survived their new environment, and the predators who are anxiously awaiting an easy meal! As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions about our experiments and adventures at Hidden Hollows. Have a great Labor Day holiday weekend! Randall

That looks like a big mud puddle...lol It takes awhile to get even a little visibility. I've been around numerous man made ponds some spring fed. The spring fed ones were by far the nicest and the fish seemed to be healthier. Is there any structure in either pond and does it have anything on the bottom beside the original dirt?

you need to have plants in the water for oxygen to stay in the water so the fish do not die. just saying

You should dig a ditch going from the creek to the pond that way you got fish coming down into the pond and more water

when you dug out the new pond, did you pack down the dirt on the bottom? did you put any gravel on the bottom too?

...tossing in some nitrogen fertilizer and several pails of bottom muck from a living pond will help a new pond dug into sterile mineral soil...

Something that I have found that works very well for filling a pond, is runoff from the gutters from the house, or any building close by.

If your having problems with leaking you can allways throw in some gypsum or sheetrock into the middle of your pond.  The sheetrock will dissolve and flow to the point of the leak and seal it.  Wont harm your fish, and only need a piece about 2x2 should stop your leak in a couple days.

you should treat the ground soil of your pond with chicken manure before placing the chubs, eventually the manure will make some moss and other plant-like organisms that would hold the water on your pond and also produce natural foods for your fishes. i learned it from high school. :) however u can also achieve your goal water level by consistently pumping up more water in the pond, that would also build the mosses down under but will take time.

So did your pond fill to the level you wanted it to?
I would think rain would top it up, it certainly does in the lake where I fish.

Your pond needed some vegetation, lily pads and reeds, put those in and you'll get food for the fish, natural larvae, insects, worms, water snails etc.
