I just watched your video I live in metro Tampa and have never had the problem to a degree that you did it breaks my heart. We have had some of our smaller female Koi and a very large beloved Gold fish die from the inability to absorb three eggs. My Koi actually spawned this morning for the first time in 3 years. We had been battling fish lice for that entire time period and were taking a huge toll on the health of the fish. We lost 2 of our 10+ year old females due to the lice one was a off spring from a spawning and was hand fed her entire life. Sorry to hear that you lost fish as a result of this I know it can be a hard thing to deal with.

They are Koi which are a form of carp. Most fish are edible or able to be eaten but these are not for that purpose. Many of these fish can fetch prices well into the thousands and some well bred special koi have sold for at least $500,000. They also tend to be very dog like for a fish and people get very attached to their koi when they eat from their hands and follow them around even greet them when they arrive home. So while you can eat a koi it would not be a pleasant meal nor would it be the intended purpose. Carp have a mealy soft odd texture and are a bit muddy tasting. If you were starving and they were all you had available you could eat them.

+MultiIncredulo Hi, I would consider a flat black panel with copper tubing inside covered with glass and a heat exchanger. This will transfer the heat without the worry of leaching from the pipes or hose. Each sq meter will add about 500 watts/joules assuming less than optimal sunlight and efficiency losses.

In Croatia I bring them in the basement at indoor Koi pond.Bought a plastic stock tank to keep them in.The filtration equipment is installed in the utility room, away from the pond. Indoor pond incorporate lighting system to illuminate the Koi.
Every 3 weeks drain out a third of the water and refill.

My golden perch could use that. Apparently absolute minimum for health fish is 16C(61F) . Sunday morning it was down to 10C(50F) . This morning it was up to 15C(59F)

+redteamla wrong, koi carp are not domesticated. Koi are just carp with colour mutations. Old Chinese farmers would spot a normal black or brown carp with a colour abnormality and bred it with another carp like it over hundreds of years mote and more colour has been bred unto the fish. Koi would survive fine out in the wild they are not domesticated at all. People just keep them because of the fascinating colours and size they can get to as a fresh water fish.

+sergej Zr they origianlly made large ponds at the top of hills so they could water rice fields in the winter. Then they start keeping carp in them to feed their family during the winter. The fish (no longer dealing with preditors) begain to change into these beautiful colors. With out these fish, many would have died from starvation. Nature is always evolving. This mutation has served them well. Plenty of natural carp in the wild. It truely harms no one. You act as if it is the same as keeping a tiger for a pet. It's more like a cat or dag. Both of which seem to be quite happy in their roles in our lives. All three have adapted to humans in their lives and are happy pets. Natural mutation is one thing, maybe you should focus your out rage towards genetically modifing fish in the oceans and rivers. That is the true tragity.

+sergej Zr Koi are not essential to human civilization, but we would not have gotten very far without the domestication of animals. See Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel". Consider the other products of domestication and the human livelihoods that depend on them: our beloved dogs and cats, meat, milk, cheese, silk, wool, horses, etc.

This is exactly the problem. First take living creatures out of their environment, change their bodies to serve some egoistic desires like "make them beautiful orange", such that they can not survive in their natural homes anymore and than "take care of them". Hey, the nature is the best who can take care of the animals. Just leave them where they are ;)

Sorry , i´m kinda confused. If the season was warmer , and that didn´t help the koi eggs, how did heating the water helped ? I know i missed something here.

Good idea, too, for heating a swimming pool up in the late spring/early summer when they're not getting up to comfort level soon enough.
Also for add/refill water for small pond/children's pools: add another hose and coil it on blacktop driveway. Run the water slow.
Another idea haven't tried: make flat coils of 5ft diam of hoses (space between the lines of coil), mount on crossbars to hold shape, lay out in sun and connect inline pump. Can also put the coils in solar boxes, cold frames during colder months but might want to use a copper pipe.
I've seen experiments with pipe systems run through deep compost heap in a greenhouse. The water temps got to 150*F. Hot water was used for the house (free hot water!) Lasted a couple months if I remember right.

This also explains the climate change/breeding cycle connection. While Dan's koi problem is disturbing, (and expertly taken care of by Dan) there are very serious ecological problems coming in the future. The Southern US will have the perfect conditions for the breeding cycle of the mosquito that transmits Malaria, which makes Dan's green science even more important than it already is. It's all connected.

Interesting Video, I have a similar problem my Solution is heating my pond with rotting grass clippings. A tube is running throw the pile and warms the water up. I have to change the grass after two weeks. In the beginning the pile is 60°C 140F and after two weeks its 30°C 86F maybe you can use your clippings to.

I've been putting this info together for a while. I installed some Geo-Thermal Heat Pumps in a "Section 8 Housing Project" in North Texas. We were drilling 1 hole that
was between 80-120 feet deep. We put a Heavy 2 inch Black Pipe(not pvvc) but this
could be bent some but not enough to not put in 2 "90's" and they backfilled it after
it was leak checked for proper time & later it was a water & antifreeze mix that this
system pumped around. It used the ground as it's Radiator to release heat in summer and in Winter it took heat from the ground, all with water as the method to
carry the heat. I want to do 2 100foot holes but run my pipes with NO connections
underground....lol....Can't have that as a possible leak point over time. So, I'll find a way to pipe it. I didn't like the way we did the Government job I was on & I said so but it was my company. It would've cost too much to do it right. This was right around Sept 11.....I was there the day the twin towers were hot by planes, but Solar
is the best method to heat your aqauponic garden. I'm setting mine up now & off the
grid. This Geo-Thermal IS MY Set-up I'm going with to heat/Control Temps in both
my Fish tanks which I have 2 @275 Totes with 6 @ 55 gal barrels cut in half so 12
beds. Geo-Thermal is my method & it's the best. I'll still need power for water pumpes for the Earth, for my fish/Garden & I'll use Gr. Power's Fresal Lens if I can
buy one? I can use them in a few ways too! BUT USE the"Geo-Thermal" it's not too hard & it works very well as I've installed it, for heat pumps it worked well in Texas. Peace & good luck

Great video Dan. One thing you could consider that might reduce your input is to place a few large boulders in the bond half in the water and half out. As the sun warms up the rocks, they will act as heat sinks and warm up the pond too.

I don't know how your pond is situated with the sun, and you've probably thought of this before, but I thought I would mention it. I know it's worked for other people (like Sepp Holzer).

Dan. I had almost the same issue over the last 5yrs. 1,000 gal 4ft deep pond which would get down to 45F or lower in FTW TX. I tried the electric stock tank heater but thats a waste of power for the size. I ended up making a plastic dome sheet bubble over the pond with electrical conduit held with re-bar stakes. About every 5 days I would feed the pond with well water at 69F 20gal a min and pump out the same amount into the creek which feeds our local lake. Pump would run maybe 6hrs 2x week at 1.4kwh. I was able to keep the pond at 62-69F all winter. Using the plastic bubble or dome kept the heat in for extended periods and helps keep cold rain and sleet out.

SOLD:-) We have a few approaching 40 pounds. The ones that died last year were estimated at $1,200 to $14,000 based on size and markings according to the fish experts and assuming there was a buyer. One fish was 45 pounds. They really did not look that big until they came out of the water. I froze five of them to maybe make fish molds or something. They weigh 150 pounds total and fill an entire small deep freeze:-( We spent 2 weeks in the cold water trying to save them but once they got close enough to capture and work on, it was too late. No scale problems and gills perfect.

Hi Wayne,
We have a fence around the pond and our yard. No gators since 1975. The pond has banded water snakes but they only eat small stuff and are non-poisonous. The gators are up the road at our other place one mile away. That place is connected to a park and aquatic wetland preserve so there are gators and water moccasins. Totally different type of wildlife there. This monster sized viper was in the swamp but was captured and moved.

Had a fish pond up here. Didn't work out though. First, go around raccoons were pillaging it at night. Put a green plastic net over it to stop that. But, fish kept going missing. wasn't long until a very fat garder snake was found near the pond.

...Will have to be indoor only if I want fish here, lol.

Maybe a transparent plastic foil will help but that pound seems quite large to be covered so not sure how it can be done in an economic way.
I wanted to ask your help with my Solar BMS that I lunched about two weeks ago on Kickstarter. I do not have any founds for advertising but maybe I can send you a Solar BMS when is ready if that is of any interest to you.
It is a sort of replacement for Lead Acid 12V/24V charge controllers but mine is for Lithium batteries any type since is fully programmable. I designed for my off grid house where I just moved last summer.
I just uploaded a video today about the benefit of LiFePO4 when compared to Lead Acid for energy storage.

I used to go to a restaurant that had a large pool that had a bunch of koi that were so tame they would come up next to the tables for bread crumbs and meal worms from your fingers. The owner had a sign telling us what we could and couldn't feed them besides their normal food. (They sold the meal worms as treats for them)
I'm sorry you lost so many, that's really too bad. Since I moved here all my indoor fish died, even with a heater they didn't make it (Too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer). We have well water, but it's very hard and alkaline. Even R/O water didn't help.

Hi Steve, the fish were a gift for my Dad. Wen he passed in 2006 the fish became sort of pets. They usually hide in the 15 ft deep center. Turns out the fish that died last year were worth a few thousand dollars each because of the size, markings and color. They are difficult to catch when healthy so just pets. Largest one in the pond is about 40 -50 pounds. Hope all is well.
