30,000 gallons you would need
Five 6000 gallon tankers to fill that up

Fantastic job. The pool in the background is kind of obtrusive, have you considered some foliage/evergreen trees to hide it? May not matter to you, just curious. Well done, I’d love to have something like that some day.

The EPDM liner for this size of pond alone would cost a grand, the skimmer and 6000 GPH pump for that waterfall, another grand easy, 20 tons of boulders, sets you back $3K, etc... The market value of the materials alone here is well over $5K.

Holding a large body of water above the foundation of your home, so close is asking for trouble unless you have a liner. Water will percolate down hill and laterally and cause long term damage to the foundation. Keep a close eye on your liner!

Its 6.5' feet at its deepest, it shows this in the video. However the whole pond isn't this deep, some parts are only 3 feet on the sides. So wouldn't I'm not sure how many gallons it is but its alot more then 3,000. Probably 4-5x as much.
FillUmUpp
FillUmUpp - 8 years ago
+Geoff Smith this is a 3,000 gallon pond at the most.. the deepest point was barely 3 feet and a majority of the pond was under 2 foot.. click 1:19 and try to tell me you could fit 20,000 gallons of water in there...

Mittzie - 8 years ago
+mrsean209 when you do it yourself VS hiring professionals your not having to pay hourly wages, insurances (business health etc) and other various fees in order to install it, if you have 4 guys doing a pond that takes 4 days to put in professionally working 10 hour days at 12$ per hour plus a foreman/head guy and we will low ball that to 15$ an hour your already well over 2000$ JUST in wages.
Owen Einarson
Owen Einarson - 8 years ago
+mrsean209 It is amazing what some company will charge to do something when you do it yourself you can save a bundle I got estimates on a deck there cost 8-9000 dollars did it myself under 2500.  When you hire a company your not only paying for all the materials you got all the labor as well. Iif you can do most of the work yourself and hire the professionals for some of the things your not sure of even than your sure to save lots of cash.
IGrowDankBuds420
IGrowDankBuds420 - 8 years ago

lea perrins

+Puckles100
Thanks for the information. I don't know what the lay out will be yet as I am sculpting a piece of land. If you use a system with fish, frogs and plants etc then you shouldn't have mosquito issues. Beneficial insects are welcomed.

I can't afford to pay a professional. Whilst i can certainly see the benefit when one does not want to be directly involved with the project, I think if you are willing to research the whole job properly then people can achieve amazingly successful projects.

Also, the whole system will be based upon around permaculture principles therefore I anticipate the ability to drain and control large amounts of water. In permaculture everything should benefit and feed into another system. There are also arguments for not using clay that I am aware of. I need to look at everything and sum up what the best choices for me are. Unfortunately budget is a huge deciding factor. However, ingenuity is often born out of necessity, therefore, I am willing to embrace the experience.

http://www.livingthecountrylife.com/homes-acreages/ponds/fixing-a-leaky/
Puckles100
Puckles100 - 8 years ago
+lea perrins lol I'm not upset. Sorry I didn't mean to be harsh. Yes. If it leaks it can destroy your home. Leaky ponds are very common and can cost you a fortune to hire a professional to find and fix the leak. Even pond liners can get leaks. There are different types of clay that you can use to line the pond. A pond that is not constructed properly right next to your home could become a total nightmare. If you are going to do this I would highly suggest that you consult with a professional pond builder to advise you on exactly how to do it on your unique property and perhaps hire an engineer to come out and consult with you as well. Depending on where you live, your city should be able to direct you to professionals so you can get their opinions - a small cost for peace of mind knowing that it is done properly. Even if its done properly, though, there is still always a risk of something failing - such as drainage pipes. I would make sure my home owners insurance would cover me if something went wrong if I did it myself. There are people who watch YT videos and think they can just dig a hole and fill it with water and it is going to be a successful pond. This is just not the case. A successful pond needs to be a carefully planned and properly constructed pond that takes in all the factors for the unique area in which it is going to be placed. Also be aware that you are going to be attracting lots of snakes and mosquitoes and such right next to your house. lol
lea perrins

+Puckles100
Oh dear, there is no need to get upset! I was simply trying to understand and make sense of your comment since this is something I intend to do in the future.

So when you say 'it will destroy the foundations of your house', do you mean only if it leaks? It's not going to destroy the foundations just by magically being there is it?
Puckles100
Puckles100 - 8 years ago
+lea perrins Putting a pond this close to your home at the BOTTOM of a hill is absolutely asinine. I am not going to argue about this. Ponds can leak. It will destroy the foundation of your house. Unless you have a professional drainage system put in you are a moron if you dig a pond this close to your home. Ask a structural Engineer. They will say the exact same thing. I have seen a house literally breaking in half from a small leaky swimming pool that was too close and that destroyed the entire foundation of the house by destabilizing the land with the water it leaked.
lea perrins
lea perrins - 8 years ago
+Puckles100
I don't really know what you mean by destabilise the ground. I have googled the risk of ponds doing this and I get no hits whatsoever.

As far as flooding is concerned, I don't see how a pond makes this any worse an event. Flooding is not a good thing with or without a pond involved.

As far as ponds leaking, well, cars can crash, houses can burn down ect but it doesn't stop us living life. It's just a consideration to look out for.
Puckles100
Puckles100 - 8 years ago
Not to mention that it is at the bottom of an incline. Imagine if it flooded.

+roma kozlovsky 20,000 gal is 9 feet deep, 30 feet long, 10 feed wide. The dimensions of this pond are not remotely similar to those numbers. Impossible to compare using that approach. But the funny thing, is that it is probably 20,000 gal. Just with completely different dimensions.

Pretty good man, especially for the cost. Used to work at a Pond store and know how expensive these can get if someone builds it. Nice Do it yourself job. FYI probably was a typo, but did you mean 3,000 gallon.
Flowmasta Flam
Flowmasta Flam - 9 years ago
+Thekingcmk Come on man you worked in a pond store and think that's 3,000 gallon? The amount of water it takes to fill holes as they get bigger is a deceivingly large amount. Look at his dimensions, 23 feet by 33 feet, and at it's deepest almost 6 feet. Of course it isn't a perfect cube, but 3,000 gallons would be like 8x8x6. This pond is significantly larger.

Is liner simply cheaper than clay? I'd want my pool to be as natural as possible.
Jefferdaughter
Jefferdaughter - 9 years ago
Not sure about the relative cost, but clay will last longer, allows more of a sustainable eco-system to become established, and if a clay lined pond develops a leak, it can be repaired; the plastic liners are considered un-repairable.  Ponds can be set up to naturally circulate water through convection currents, to maintain more stable temperatures without power, to produce food, cover, and oxygen for fish - naturally - and even to produce food for the family.  It's harder to find info on how to set up a functional natural pond than it is to find info on how to set up an artifical one, but it's out there.  Best of luck!

moving water + fish = no mosquito. I have zero mosquito larvae in my 3 ponds.
Mosquito very often lay eggs in the smallest amount of water. it does not take ponds for them. Check under your decks, any planter or container forgotten outside. that's well enough. Don't blame it on the neighbors.
wetterwille173
wetterwille173 - 9 years ago
+thesby tolbert Your neighbour might consider leaving his pump turned on at nights. Moving water surface keeps more oxygen in the water. And at daytime the plants will give oxygen to the water, but at night the same plants consume oxygen from the water. At least that's what i've learned. Correct me if i'm wrong :)

...even a few fish in a pond of any size (mine is about 150'diameterx13'deep) will decimate any mosquito larvae;  the builder in this nice video noted he had put some feeder fish in there, so even without the waterfall/pump I bet youd be hard pressed to find one single larva in his nice pond

nice work by the way really makes the yard look fantastic;  now, think of the pond possibilities if you are not using that pool too much anymore  :))
BroodyHound BreedWise
BroodyHound BreedWise - 10 years ago
never had an issue with mine   a small fountain or just the filter will take care of it because larva can not survive in moving water standing stagnant water only.  then you can get mosquito eating fish =]
Shirley Alexander Clifton
Shirley Alexander Clifton - 10 years ago
Mosquitoes do not lay their eggs in moving water. I've never had mosquito larvae in my pond.  IF one does have that sort of problem in standing water, just add some Mosquito Dunks - and the larvae cannot grow to maturity. Completely safe for other wildlife/pets.  :-)

Suggestion, do a gravel bed at the bottom of your water fall and put some freshwater clams/mussels there and you will have much cleaner water as they would eat, as their food source, the algae that murks the water. When the clams/mussels get too numerous, harvest some out and crush them up and throw them back in to feed your fish.

no way this pond is 30,000 gal pond  max 10000 gal, a pond of  7m x7m   x1.5 m  depth (all in Meter) only hold about16000 gal
Andrew Jones
Andrew Jones - 9 years ago
You're right. There's no way it's 30,000 gallons. You can't calculate by the max depth, need to do average depth which is probably about half of the max depth. I'd say 15,000 gallons give or take a little.
And I can't imagine how fast he got a leak on that thing with the thin liner he used. We use 45 mil Firestone liner for our ponds. A quality liner would be double what he paid. Cheap will eventually bite you in the a$s
David D
David D - 10 years ago
I just calculated it based on the dimensions he listed of 33'x23'x65".  It comes out to 30,754 gallons.  Of course he does show it is not all 65" deep, but I don't think his 30,000 estimate is too far off

Your pond doesn't look like it could be much wider than 20 ft in the widest direction, but if we generously assume it is 20 ft X 20 ft x 5 ft deep (ignoring the shelves), that would be 2,000 sq ft. 2,000 sq ft is = 14,961 US gal A little short of 30,000 gallons. In reality the shelves would make it much less than 14,961 gallons.

no, the water never cleared up. the fish survived the 1st few winter without any issues, but they got big fast and i wasn't taken into account that the bigger they were getting of course the more O2 they needed plus that winter was longer and colder. the pond was frozen longer than any of the previous winters. was going to work on it this summer but it got away from me... next summer...

Nice pond. But why do the levels by hand? If you used a backhoe to dig the main hole why not just use it to put in the different levels too? Shoulda just dug them as you went. It would have been just like benching out a trench. Then you coulda shaped em up by hand after if you didn't get them close enough with the hoe. Just pointing out that you coulda saved yourself a lot of handwork!

Also, multiple levels promotes multiple temperature zones. Multiple temperature zones promote natural "currents" and that helps the water circulate naturally. And when water is circulating it also helps regulate the temperature over all. Not totally NEEDED but it's good to have if you can.

its also a safety feature in the instance that a child falls in. The "shelves" also act as great landings for your rock material. Be sure to check with you county ordinances to make sure a certain depth requirement is met or not exceeded. For e3xample, some counties say that any water feature with a depth of 36"or more is to be considered a pool and needs to be permited (higher property tax). the same county may have an ordinance requiring fences to be installed around yard containing a "pool"

Fantastic job, but it might not be the 30K gal you think. It measures 33' L 23' W 6' D, it's not a circle, it's an ellipse, so let us start by averaging the diameter; take 33" L plus 23" W and divide it by 2, the average's 28' diameter, then the depth's 6' but again that's the deepest part, let's say on average it has 4' of depth, now let us calculate: average diameter 28' X average depth 4' X ( Pi square 3.14 X 2 ) = 1,104 cubic feet X 7.5 gal per cubic foot = 8,280 gal max. Fantastic job !

Nice but you did leave out alott of stuff. And that sure dont look like 30,000. That would figure to around 4000 cubic feet of area. 7.48 gallons/cuft of space. It look more about 3,000 gallons. You need plants to get rid of some of those nitrates produced by the fish. Plus they will feed on them too. The liner is 1/2 the minimum thickness recomended for ponds. Backhoe and concrete truck filled with water around 1500 not figured in. As another poster added good first attempt.

@MrGreen958 there isn't alot of fish, it has an overflow, water never comes up to the top(and we had major flooding in 2006) and i did state that i used a back hoe to dig the main part of the hole. i don't know what rock "cakes" are. there are plenty of things that i would change if i.d only knew in the beginning. my main problem is the all day direct sun. i hope to get back in the spirit and start to work on fixing my mistakes...lol

Very nice job. I just built a 520 gal pond myself with a flexable linner and that was hard enough work so I can only imagine what it was like for you. I spend about $1200.00 on everything. Since I live in Florida, the most costly part was buying the rocks ($575.00) Since Florida is mostly sand unlike the northeast where I grew up,I couldn't just go to the river and get them myself, I had to buy them at a supply store where they are trucked in from another state. Again, nice job.

@kartikca i was using a small water pump to keep an opening in the ice for the 1st year. 2nd year the pump stopped working and the pond frose over but they suvived the winter. so for a couple of years i didn't keep an opening in the ice and it frose over for several months without loses. but i wasn't taking in account that the fish were growing and they would need more oxygen and over the winter of 2007/08 all my koi and 3 channel cats died. so an opening is definately needed.
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 14 years ago
@kartikca WOW!, that's cold! the coldest it's ever got around here was a couple of years ago at -14°F and that was a record. the colder the environment the deeper your pond would have to be(below frost line). i don't know how you can keep an opening in the surface being the temp getting that cold. ask a local nursery in your area.

i now know how lucky i am with getting these boulders for free... i seen in this gardening store, where i live, and they had a couple of boulders, each on their own pallet for $300-$400 each. THAT'S INSANE!!! but anyway, i own my home with 2acres plus 100's of acres behind my home and there is not 1 boulder on it, which is unusual for this region. when you dig, anywhere, you get lots of shale only.
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 14 years ago
@telemarker77 the concrete plant i worked for 'rented' space in a quarry. i asked the manager of quarry if i can take some rocks home, here and there,he said yes. and by coincidence they had a pile of boulders in 1 spot(never before or after did they do this). so that night(i was the last 1 back from delivering concrete, everybody was gone) i used our loader(concrete plants) to load as much boulders that i could fit in our dump truck and hauled it home. ***see comment below for rest***
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 14 years ago
@jordan628trisha i hauled a tri-axle loaded dump truck full of boulders and it still wasn't enough. i also filled a full size van(as much as it can hold) 4 or 5 times and still didn't have enough...

That's a very nice pond, we have one in our back garden that we started to build in 1962 all out of concrete about 20 ton, but your liner is a much better idia, we have had a few problems with leaks over the years.
Smokeondavidp69
Smokeondavidp69 - 14 years ago
Its a good thing its in full sun, for shad plant some hardy lilys that need fun sun. They will shad the water to protect your fish and control algae. All you need is a pump and bio filter that can filter all the water at least two times a hour. Also buy a 2 dozen bundles of oxygenators plants. you'll never have algae problem again

I've been looking around and see some people placed retaining walls within their multi-leveled ponds. Is this needed, as you haven't taken those steps in your pond?
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 15 years ago
yeah i know... that savio was a waste of money... i've seen really large skimmers/filters for half the price. plus i've got to do other things to the pond to correct the all day direct sun light algae problem... i've got to get plants growing on the south side of the pond... maybe next spring...
ALP'ie
ALP'ie - 15 years ago
Well your pond is so large you could almost never tell if there is a leak! But it look's as though it is working for you! So that's good to know, still you should have got EPDM and use a machine like a truck and invite a few friends to help, that's what i would have done, but that's just me. Well i hope you get a filter soon i really want to see your koi!
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 15 years ago
mine's been going now for 5years, no leaks... and as i said, i installed it all by myself, which means a lot of dragging the liner over rocks, gravel, and a lot of sharp stuff. plus the front and back walls of the pond had endless amounts of shall, just have to have a good underlayment. i'm not defending ultraguard, i couldn't care less in what liner to use... as long as it hold water.
ALP'ie
ALP'ie - 15 years ago
Well Believe it or not, i installed a pond for my cousins for the trill of it, and added a Ultra-Gard to their pond 30Mil PVC (thicker than yours) and in one year because of the boulders the liner tore in 16 Different place's in less than a year, So i relined it... I bought a 45 Mil EPDM Anjon Pond Liner w/ Lifetime warranty, and paid less than i did for the PVC. Till today No leaks, No fuss, No refilling everyday, No problem!
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 15 years ago
i chose the 'ultraguard' because it was as strong as the epdm but very much lighter. it was hard enough trying to get the 35'x50' 20mil liner in place by myself. why is it junk?
Richard Walsh
Richard Walsh - 15 years ago
if you look above the pond you'd see a pool. and my back yard is 2 acres, it would take alot more work to rip up the backyard.
ALP'ie

Beautiful pond, good job! We have a 2500 gal pond/waterfall in our backyard. It's nice but we have so much trouble with string algae! We treat it all the time, but still end up draining & cleaning about every 3 months! Do the feeder fish you spoke of eat the algae??? We have talked about getting some kind of bottom feeder but didn't know if it would really help. Any suggestions??? Any feedback ould be much appreciated!

specs are in "about this video" as for how the pump is performing; at first it was pumping a large quantity of water. then it was seemingly slowing down(and was confirmed by my father who's seen it when it was 1st installed and then months later).then 2yrs after installed it stopped running. was replaced under 2 1/2yrs warranty. but the replacement was slower than the original right before it died.

thanx, i did a lot of work while my back was killing me. i had to roll all boulders from around 50' from the UPPER left side of the pond. if you notice, left of the water fall, the ground drops sharply, that's where i had to avoid losing control of those giant boulders and having them roll in and distroying the pond. it took everything i had to move them a foot let alone stopping them from dropping to fast down that steep slope...

i did try those floating plants: 1st they don't sell em til late spring/early summer(that makes no sence). i noticed, to late, that they do better when they don't move around the pond(so they didn't florish). i'll give them another shot this summer. the plants that are in the water now is on the north side, so thats useless. this year i'll probably drain down to where i can put plants on the south side.
