Fine production team! All a bit too small but seems to work fine! Stay away from going too big but a fine hobby You have and where are the kids? Australia is a good place and the winters are not so bad. I have 3 ponds but like Your waterfall dishes, they are new to me and wish I could get them in black just like Yours and I go a bit higher say 1-2 ft. Richard

Joyce Hoffman

Careful with mulch around a fish pond. If the die from the mulch makes its way into the pond it will kill your fish. Friends lost their entire pond last year and some of the fish were 10 years+. But looks awesome.
pecktec

+Joyce Hoffman ok thanks. I did get a little sloppy but I didn't get much in there. I pulled out the couple of pieces that made it in. We had torrential rain for two weeks after so hopefully any residue worked it's way out. My endlers are doing ok so far.

With your attitude of the rain, you seem like you are from the PNW. At least, that's my attitude with the rain: if you never do anything because it is raining, then you'll never do anything in the PNW.

PalJoey1957
PalJoey1957 - 7 years ago
Those plants are potted and will get their nutrition from the dirt. To take the nutrients away from the algae you need floating plants with their roots in the water: Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth to name just two. You are adding some shade, but that's about it Plus that dirt will leach nutrients into the water - possibly making the problem worse.
Dicephalous 90
Dicephalous 90 - 7 years ago
partially correct, but the option is not only floating plant, there are some of plants that absorb nutrient from water directly in a marginal way, floating plant need alot of surface area, and can be a mess, u can use sweetflag, papyrus, umbrella palm, I plant these plant bare roots completely without soil, just put the roots in the water and stuck it with big rock to hold em, and they grow crazy
TheGamer707
TheGamer707 - 7 years ago
I like the video with content and rainy effort you put. Yes, I too agree here...You can fill the bog filer with gravel & plant those which will be more effective and adding floating plants keep the algae in control and water clean. This will also reduce evaporation. Also it will be a great idea if you do a video of the store you went, looks like they have good collection.
Eric Nothing
Eric Nothing - 7 years ago
You can tint the water too to help with algae if you can't put a shade roof over it. Awesome video I need some of these plants for my koi pond.

I love how the pond looks with the new bog filter, I've a mini pond in my front yard too (but it's a 15gallon one). Does your pond have an overflow or something for draining the extra water when it rains? I keep mine in a covered area so I won't have that problem (since mine is full of little guppy babies that are really fun to watch)
pecktec
pecktec - 7 years ago
+Ricardo Ortiz no I don't really have an overflow. But it rarely rains enough to get that high. Although it is now.

t8 25w florescent bulbs are sold in in 36" sizes; is that size the length of the bulb or the length of the fixture they go in.
These listed 36" t8 bulbs fit in one of my figures that calls for 30" 30w t8 fluorescent day light.
Are both bulbs really 30"?
And is it safe to inter change these bulbs for both fixtures.

I need to get my wife to make an appearance on one of my videos. (Turnabout is fair play because I'm in her videos.) Looking great! I've read so much about bog filters over the past few weeks, our raised koi pond is getting an upgrade this year, and there's so much conflicting information, prefilter / don't prefilter, remove soil from plants first or don't, depth of the bog, even what gravel to use (I love the internets). I really like this simple approach!
pecktec
pecktec - 7 years ago
+matthew smith the inspiration pond that gave me the idea (at the shop) uses a full pond filter then sends it up to the bog. I would think some sort of pre filter would help the life of the pump.

Very nice. But that may be too much water for the pitcher plant. Keep an eye out for rotting at the base. It likes its roots wet, but not the stems submerged. You may have to elevate it a bit, and get it out from under the waterfall. Overall, a very nice pond!
