NOT KEEPING TURTLES. Hey everyone, thanks for all the kind words and advice I've received after posting this video. Because I get a lot of comments because I chose to include shots of a baby turtle that just appeared one day (that I removed and put in the creek out back), I decided to try to pin this up top to let you know that i understand about turtle care and have no intention of keep them in this pond. If they were to get out and go over to the pool, they would die...and I don't want to put up barrier arounds the pond to keep them in. Surprisingly...the larger turtles can pull themselves out of the pond using the edge because I keep it filled close to the top. Anyway, thanks for caring about the well-being of turtles! I'll make sure I stay vigilant and keep them out.

Pro tip, you really need some shrimp and algae eaters for open sun water but especially shrimp to tend the plants and help them grow as well as eating dead fish that you don't catch.

Top job mate. I really like your design and setup. I recently did something similar here in Australia and had a few algae bloom issues as my pond is also in direct sunlight. I fixed it with a great natural solution. A mate of mine suggested I do a bog filter. And wow, the pond is 100% crystal clear and I have a great selection of water plants right next to it that are feed by the fish poop and Algae. So if you want to try a bog filter (easy to do after you have already put in a pond) I highly recommend it. Its basically a natural filter and there are a few good youtube DIY clips if you do a search. Anyhow, hope your pond is still going well and thanks again for the upload. Cheers CC123

Why the typical goldfish/koi? why not something more exotic?
For example I heard of someone who kept guppy fish in a pond, they would do great in summer (it gets to 30-35 degrees c in here) but would die back in winter.
How about discus or neon fish or anything else that's not goldfish or koi?

Creative Fish Studio that's the next thing I thought about, a side view. But how do you build the glass to withstand the pressure?
Just thick enough?
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
+Shachar Petrushka I actually just pulled 100+ Guppies out for the winter. Why goldfish/koi? The main reason is visibility and topview appearance. Thin fish like a discus wouldn't offer the same visual enjoyment without a side view (tank or pond window). Guppies were a little interesting...but nothing like the goldfish and koi. Very easy to spot, spend a lot of time near the surface and swim all over. That's the main reason. Some fancy goldfish are bread for their top view...but I don't have them in here because they swim too slow to be in with the koi.

It's a nice looking pond, but when having fish you want double the filtration of the volume of your pond.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Yeah. That is true. I'm actually running two filters to accomplish that. The one has UV and the other is more work with the filters down in the water (more work to clean)

You should have added some way for the turtle to climb out, they need to come out of ponds to dry off completely and bask otherwise they will have problems. They can get fungus and shell rot from not being able to dry off.

I have a question, I have no knowledge about winter. What do you do with Koi up coming winter.?
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
at almost 4 feet deep, it shouldn't freeze solid even in really cold places. That's what we did with my dad's pond in Michigan. Never lost a fish over the winter period.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
I dug it deep enough that I will just leave them in all winter. I'll pull the hose from the water fall and just have it shooting in as a stream from the hose to help keep ice from forming. Don't have much worry about that here in southeastern Virginia though. If it freezes, I'll just break a small hole in the ice

Very nice man! this video really inspired me to build a similar pond and im already planning it. Can you tell me what kind of tarp/liner you used on the bottom? and did you add sand as a medium to the bottom of the pond? Very very simple and cool!
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
A lot of people use sand under the liner at the bottom and then put underlayment material on top of that to help protect the liner. Against everyone's better judgement, I decided not to do that as there won't be any trees nearby to have roots try to penetrate it. We also did a pretty good job cleaning the soil under it. If the ground had a lot of rocks or roots, I would have used the sand and underlayment.

I didn't put sand as a medium in the bottom of a pond this small...because the fish will mess with it, stir it up and potentially keep the water murky. They already pull the rocks and dirt out of my planted pots.
xSean145
xSean145 - 7 years ago
Also, How do you deal with the rain ? Doesnt it overflow if there is too much rain ? I mean doesnt the fish swim out at the little overflow edge you made ?

Just some info from my years of having my pond. If your pond is 2000 gal you really want a pump and filter that are almost double that. It will give you way clearer water and keep the water moving. Also, I used to make the mistake of turning one pump off and on but that is the main oxygenator you have so unless you put a hose into your return line which will suck in air and oxygenate your pond (Pong guru show what I mean in one of his videos) and with plants in the pond, don't turn it off especially at night or you may come out to dead fish. Looks sleek! Congrats!

where are you going to put the basking spot and ledge above water for the turtles when they want to get out of the water? I know they are mostly aquatic, but they do tend to like a bit of dry sunshine on occasion.
The end result is so lovely to look at.
How often will you need to do water changes?
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Thanks Rebecca! I do 10% water changes once a week right now. I don't have plans to add a basking spot because at the moment I don't plan to keep turtles in it. :) That little guy in the video appeared one day and after filming him, I moved him out to the creek in the back later that tday. We had a larger one get in and he pulled himself out on the "overflow" side. I keep the water high enough in the pond that they are able to climb out.

Are you going to add any guppies to the pond as well... really help to control mosquitoes and just adds a little extra life to the pond. Also, at the end of the season you will be surprised at what kind of color variation developed on its own. I like the sunset colored golden guppies because they are easier to see but any will work.
Creative Fish Studio

+Thomas Lindgren I actually was breeding some with the goal to add them to the pond. I just haven't yet., but I put some in our fountain in the front yard. I've got a bunch.

Which State are You located in ?
I know if it's cold an ice, you have to dig it that deep and they can survive an plus pond heaters.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Hi Kelly, I live in south eastern Virginia, so it doesn't get super cold here. Every once in a while we'll get a day or two of snow, but not every year. We did have two ponds in Michigan when I was growing up and we didn't put heaters in them. It would freeze pretty thick, but we kept an opening with recirculated water from the hose that normally went to the waterfall. Sometimes it would freeze and we'd have to go break the hole open again. All fish and lilies survived through the winters there. But it was over 3 feet deep in the middle as well and the deep section provided room for the fish to "hibernate" for winter.

Very pretty ... but those rock-things at the edges caught my attention ... they could harbour snakes. Especially given the fish etc.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
+Daya K that's possible. But they also could be in the bushes and grasses. We put snake-a-way around the perimeter of pond are to help deter snakes, but I also tap the rocks with a pole before I walk back there to clean the filter.

love the style of your pond. I have  a suggestion. for clearer water run water thu 300 micron filter socks either inside your waterfall box or make a box to house it. 300 micron grabs all the algea in the water collum
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
+Jimi182 that's a great suggestion. In the initial build I had a waterfall box, but switch to pushing the hose straight from the filter in between the two waterfall blocks. I'll see if there is a way to incorporate it somehow

Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
I was a little worried about the house too, which is why I took some extra measures to try to control the water runoff. I'll be keeping my eye on it and make any adjustments or fill the pond in and move it if it really comes down to it. The ground level is already much higher on the house where the pond is then it is at the far corner, so I think it'll be ok.
Rob Nelson
Rob Nelson - 7 years ago
Well - looks great - you should be proud. Nothing like standing back and enjoying a little DIY (thousands saved). I was a little apprehensive it was so close to your home/structure - but that will help on predator kill if you're going to put koi in there. Congrats again - looks epic.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
No real regrets. I'm planning to use the little ledges I built as caves. Didn't intend it that way, but it will make for a quick hiding spot for the fish. I wish I could've gone bigger, but this size fit best in the area available.
Gene Cundel

Just subbed after watching this one video. My first comment has to do with what type of longevity do you plan on getting out of the build?
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Thanks Gene! I'm hoping to get at least 10-15 years out of it. I may have to re-cement or liquid nail some of the rectangle blocks back into place over time, but I don't see why it won't last. The liner has a 20 year warranty.

such a nice set up has your filter held up I would be worried I uploaded a video of my filter it's kinda ghetto but keeps my 1300 gallon above ground pool/koi pond it was as green as pea soup when I built it for like forty bucks
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
I've only been running it a few months and the filter is doing great. I'll have to replace the UV light every year, but they aren't too expensive. I'll have to check out your filter video. I like how easy this one is to access and clean...but it wasn't cheap
Shandy Adhisty
Shandy Adhisty - 7 years ago
great work dude!!! anyway is it safe from natural predator like fox, snake etc since we can see there is an open area like forest at distance of your pond site? do you have any kind of prevention method??
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
That's a great question. I would say that I am informed about the potential, but don't have all the solutions in place yet. I have an egret statue that I move to help keep away Egrets & Herons, and I put a border of "Snake-a-way" around the pond area, but raccoons and foxes could be a problem. Back by the woods behind the house is a drainage stream that always has water and fish, so the raccoons and foxes already have potential water and food there. I am going to get large flag stones to put over the two shelf areas I dug into the pond that will make them into hiding caves for the fish. I also have an outdoor cat that lives on our back patio and helps keep some other wildlife away.

what will you do on winter when the water will froze?
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
You just have to dig it deep enough to provide a spot at the bottom for them to survive.
Razi for FUN
Razi for FUN - 7 years ago
+Creative Fish Studio That s nice. Thank you for reply i was just asking becouse i wanted to do for myself but where i live are -12 and even -20 C in the winter
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
+Sinca Adrian it doesn't get too cold here in Virginia Beach. I'll move the hose from the waterfall out to create a more deliberate flow that should keep it from freezing. But I made it over 3 feet deep so the fish can go to the bottom and survive. We used to do the same with our pond in Michigan. Never took the fish out. It was deep enough for them to survive. We did try to keep an opening in the ice as it froze, but some days it was completely closed.

I live in a house too and I have recently spoke to my dad about making a small pond in the garden. He might consider doing it with me along, but it does not look easy at all. My biggest concern is the water system and keeping the young Kois away from my 5 cats .
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Thank! It has been a dream of mine to build one after we bought the house, but there wasn't a good spot for it. During recent renovations, the perfect spot opened up. My wife was kind enough to let the new patio stop short of where the deck used to go...which allowed me to put the pond there.
Richard Belanger
Richard Belanger - 7 years ago
Great job and setup!  I see you have a pretty clear pool too... what I use to clarify my pond's water is the Ph- for the pool.  It kill algue instantly and the fish will suck the rocks  clean., and best of it it is not armful to the fish. I also like very much your water drain setup... very clever
Richard Belanger
Richard Belanger - 7 years ago
I did not know that you had a UV filter, which is great specially with 6 hour of sun.  You can use the same water analyser kit that you use for the pool to fix your ph, knowing that the rain is more alkalyne that it use to be... I spry the area taht have algae groth with the PH- as needed and as I do I can see the algae breakup, specially the green filamented one, and they float to the surface and the fish rush in to suck the are.  It does not affect the water chemistry except lower the ph.  Mind you I use just what is needed to treat spot areas. Have a goos summer enjoying the pond.
Creative Fish Studio
Creative Fish Studio - 7 years ago
Thanks! So far everything is going great with it. The UV Filter actually clears the water up really well...especially considering it is in the direct sun about 6 hours. Does the PH- mess with your water chemistry or does it bring the PH back to where it needs to be?

Thanks. I currently have 6 Koi in the pond and tons of Goldfish. I bought 30 feeder goldfish the end of the cycling process. Being feeder goldfish, I didn't plan on the all living...but they did. As they grow, I may need to find some of them a new home.

Thanks! It's been a year since I started the 40g reef. For the most part everything is the same....it's had some ups and downs, but it is still going. The main thing to take a hit was my corals. I'm just getting back from traveling and already am leaving for another trip. I'll try to do an update on it when I get back.
