What sort of water plants are in there? We have one turtle (used to have two) and are thinking of doing something like this, although not quite as large.

Dan Mazzone hi there. We have water lettuce, hyacinth, palm plants, duck weed, anacharis (water weeds). They worked really well for us last year. We just bought some more for this season. They multiple like mad!

What happens in the winter when it's cold? I live in Britain and really would like to do something like this for my two yellow bellies but worried about the winter and predators

Mandrew Rydings lol ahh Its hard to say without seeing and unfortunately I dont know much about falcons :D. I also wish I knew more about your climate. The turtles we have in the pond are adapted to this type of weather.

Backyard Tortoise if I was to put struts up and chicken wire around that would prevent the falcon from trying out and keep them safe, won't they need a heater to keep the water warm for them as in Britain warm weather is a rare thing hahaha

Mandrew Rydings You are very welcome and thank you for the compliment. Ugh that Falcon would stress us out too. Its amazing how different the turtles behave in a more natural environment. If you are able to safely do it, I say go for it! ;)

Mandrew Rydings We have some pretty tough winters here. It actually got down below zero F and they all were totally fine. The water needs to be deep enough so it doest freeze through. We also ran aeration to be sure the water was agitated. We also cover the bottom with a few inches of peat moss dirt and leaf debris so they can burrow. We have had no issues with predators but we are always on the look out ;)

No worries! We have 4 European Pond turtles, 4 RES, a Cooter a Cumberland and 6 Gulf Coast box turtles that share that area :)

how do you keep it clean without having a filter and circulate the water?

Anastasia ortolano We use a lot of live plants and add peat moss to the pond floor for natural filtration. We will overflow the pond once in a while also. We do have aeration using a pond air pump to agitate water.

bebebutterfield1 Thank you! We dont have Asian box in the main pond but there was one in with the Manni. I dont think there was a pic of him during this vid though ;) We have a trio of Ambo’s that will be going out again come spring.
