Nice work Carl the landscape guy. Personally I’m not a fan of fish in a natural pond because they immediately begin to predate native amphibians that want to breed there. As landscapers we have to bow to what our customers want.

What I wish I could do is buy the property next to my parents' house, which has a creek running through it, dig out a deeper valley, and build a levee from one hill to another, and stock the pond with some fish. But, it's a homestead land, so it's not likely to be up for sale. Owner of the land behind it would probably be pissed for backing the creek's water to his land, which is why i would dig a deeper valley. The water might have a higher PH too.

So how do you keep it from freezing with out electricity?
SDD525
SDD525 - 6 years ago
To keep a body of water from freezing, you have to increase the depth. That is how beavers do it. It also makes the body of water less susceptible to drought conditions.

...a pond dug down into "mineral soil" is pretty sterile to get new biology to grow in...I was recommended to throw in some fresh mud from another pond, to re-introduce bacteria and microbes into the water, and follow that with some nitrogen fertilizer, to get a temporary bloom...

ROFL!! I love it. xD Yeah... you need to have fish in there which feed off of the mosquitoes (to keep them in check). A complete ecosystem, is a happy one. :) :P Plus, installing a fountain in the center helps deter the female mosquitoes from successfully creating the next generation plume(s) on your property.

a nice pond should always have food fish in it for your family consumption.   bluegills bass, crappie. white perch. crawfish. bullfrogs. all those resources for you to consume.    but stocking your pond should be done slowly over 3 seasons. after you have planted your water plants and lily pads, you should begin stocking life by collecting the thick green summer algae ya know the stringy stuff and some of the fluffy green too. take a gallon of water from there as well. this will contain zoo and photoplankton which is the very basis of a self sustaining ecosystem as its the start of your natural food chain. the photo and zoo planktons reproduce daily and will set up a food source for the next things to be stocked that same year which is pond and Ramshorn snails. lots of them.  collect just a cupful of those where you got your plants.  they will immediately feed on the algae and maintain your water as well as eat any decaying vegetation or anything that dies later on.  snails are your sanitation crew as well as the base of the food chain of your pond.  also collect several small buckets of  mosquito fish or guppies or whatever little tiny fish you catch where you got your plants locally. they will consume mosquito larvae and other insects that end up in the water.  mosquito fish and other tiny fish tend to breed monthly. so for every mating pair you put in youll have15 more in a month or so.  each pair producing around 50 offspring per warm season.   stocking 100-150 of them in a size like this would be perfect. the next year there will be enough to sustain next years stocking which would be your bullfrog tadpoles and crawfish.   both will scour the bottom and edges clean and consume extra algae. by now your water is well oxygenated by the algae and plants and the snails and guppies got established. I suggest you get 300 bullfrog tadpoles(they will not all survive) and in this size pond 50 berried female crayfish from a hatchery like zetts in penn.  then leave it alone another season.    in season 3 is when you stock your fingerling sized bluegills perch crappie catfish and bass. a balance of predator to prey must be maintained.   always have 4 times more feed fish than aggressive predators.  your crays will be breeding and your tadpoles will have legs by then and begin to sit on the shore in wait of insects and rodents.  now you have a self sustaining eco system you never have to touch. nature will balance itself out in another year to give you the permanent levels of stock whatever that may be. youll always have an average population of everything depending on what you harvest.   a pond to me should be ones own personal fish market. and why not since you have lots of land and space to grow crops and raise animal, why not have a productive lake or pond as well??   it could generate revenue on a larger scale as well.  and be a great resource for your family. for generations to come.   so I think this is a great project to undertake. especially if its a productive endeavor to create a natural resource.

What would you recommend to help preserve the water, and if I use liner should I put a concrete base below or is sand adequate? Thanks!

Just watched two of your videos of this pond design.I have a 30' pond that I had dug out to 6' depth. My 10 koi are doing fine after 1 year. I have a waterfall feature that I plan to run fresh pump water thru to help filter the pond and add new water to the pond when it is low during certain months of the year. Does it sound like to you that I am on a good track?

Robert Paul Guidry
Robert Paul Guidry - 8 years ago
Consider that there may be organisms in that water that can harm you. Every year or so, we hear about some teenage kid getting an Ameba in their brain and killing them. Where did that Ameba come from? They come from stagnant fresh water.. Stagnant only in that it might not have a source of fresh water flowing in or that the fresh water flowing in is not enough to replace the volume of water very quickly (time?) Usually, when they question the sick person, it turns out they were swimming in a pond or larger body of water, got some water in their nose and that's it.

Why is water in the nose bad?? There is a little bit of tissue hanging from under our brains and into our nose passageways... that it the organelle we use to smell things with.. Well, for the ameba, that in a big happy meal that it will eat its way up into your brain. I haven't heard of a cure, so you pretty much will just die when this happens.

So, is the water safe to swim in... IDK... I do know that if it isn't you will have no way to know unless someone test the water (hit/miss) or you find a history of sickness from that body of water (unlikely)

and just for good info, the water that flows past Washington DC, the Potomac, has an organism in it that has many different body shapes it changes into over its lifelite. One is an amoeba like shape. If you swim in water with that organism around, they will secrete a neurotoxin and if you swim through that cloud of neurotoxins, you will exit the water with more than a few IQ points down, for life...

is the water safe to swim in....

Very nice job, but the title is a little misleading. A more accurate description might be "How to convert a water hole into a natural pond". I don't think this can be created in a space where you don't already have a water hole.
David Preis
David Preis - 8 years ago
I'm building a pond with no liner. I'm actually draining a 30,000 gallon pool to help get it going. There was a giant stump that I build a fire pit around and after it got big enough I drain the pool water into the hole. All the ash helps hold the water in, so far. If it all drains through I'll just get a liner. The pool draining into the hole really helped expand it fast. as it filled the walls caved in and it keeps getting bigger, I just dig out the mud and fill pot holes in the yard.

Beautiful, I think I'm gonna make the commitment and put a pond in my back yard. I hope it won't clash with my neighbors pond.

This is great.  We had a O shaped pond dug up in our front lawn.. the ground is all clay.  I have ducks and geese.  They ate all the plants we put in twice.  Now I have a big algae problem.  I want a natural pond but finding it impossible to have clear and clean water since the clay gives it that grayish beige look to the water and the algae forms on top quickly.  Now I have to get some filters and put them in which I did not want to have to do.  Do you have any ideas what I could do instead of using pumps and filters?

+andrew boddy cool.. the gravel I can do but keeping the poultry away will be tough. it is a duck pond after all. LOL but will put gravel in there and a barley bale as soon as the 2 feet of snow on it melts. ;) THANKS SOOOOO MUCH! I did not even think of gravel. |We did plant lots of cattails last year but the ducks really took a liking to the roots so none of the cattails survived long. also have a small fountain but keeps blocking up each day with the silt from the clay so that did not help much. Then I just put the hose in there and kept it on a few hours each day to get circulation going. I will definitely put that gravel in.. Thanks for answering! :) have a nice easter weekend.

+Bg Labelle 1. To suppress the clay dissolving in the water try lining the pond with gravel. 2. A natural remedy for algae is barley straw, tie in a bundle and float on the surface . 3. more plants (again) and keep the poultry away ( or off the plants at lease), I have similar problems. I hope you find a solution without all the technology, pumps and filters.

+J DeWitt DIY I took out the vacuum and we sucked up all that top layer of green gonk into it and it has been weeks now and the green gonk has not come back... but now we are seeing a rust coloring to the water.  We have aeration in the form of a fountain that throws the water upwards but it clogs up really fast even with the filters.   Now we decided to get 2 sump pumps and put one on each side.  That should help quite a bit.  Also looking at trash pumps since it is clay bedding and the water is beige because of it.  Which would you suggest?  Sump or Trash pump?

I would build a small water fall that is powered by a small solar powered pump. At the base of the fall would be gravel so there is little erosion. and onto that bed of gravel, fresh water clams. They eat whatever is not eaten by the fish and eat the algae that would cloud the water. Also too, the waterfall aerates the pond and make for healthier ecosystem and fish. Water would stay clear and plants and fish would flourish. Oh yes, a cool water guppy called the "mosquito fish" is a must to control mosquitoes.

A few more "minor" points:
Adult aquatic insects can actually fly from pond to pond
Waterfalls are by far the least efficient ( most expensive) way to maintain oxygen in water
Common carp will reproduce in ponds and ruin 99 percent of all earthen or farm pond habitats
In any aerobic pond predatory insects that arrive on their own will control mosquitoes

You are going to get yourself and anyone who hires you in major trouble for stocking grass carp in the following states:
A permit and inspection are required and only sexually sterile triploid grass carp are allowed in the following states... Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, western Colorado, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota and Wyoming. This is what happens to irresponsible people who attempt to sell illegal grass carp in most states.
David Shane Costner, 42, of Harrisburg, Arkansas, possessed 110 grass carp fish, a type of invasive Asian carp. The fish were allegedly transported and sold from tanks housed in a semi-truck furnished by parent company Farley's Arkansas Pondstockers. Costner allegedly travelled around the state, conducting sales of the illegal carp from store parking lots. The trucks also contained live fish species permitted under state law, including channel catfish, largemouth bass and fathead minnows. On May 16, 2012, Costner allegedly sold two of the live grass carp to undercover DNR investigators in Midland, Michigan. Costner pleaded guilty to 12 felonies: ten counts of possession of an illegal species, a felony punishable by two years in prison and a fine of $2,000-$20,000 for each violation and two counts of selling an illegal species, a felony punishable by two years in prison and a fine of $2,000-$20,000 for each violation.

In the end, the Arkansas man was sentenced to jail and fined for selling live Asian carp in Michigan. David Shane Costner pleaded guilty to a dozen felony charges and was sentenced to spend five months in jail and to pay about $3,700 in fines and court costs. Azri'el, would you email me sir? I am interested in information on creating a man-made lake. I see that you are very knowledgeable about the process and the types of aquatic life that could be best for the ecosystem.

This is the problem here.   People make mistakes and allowed viable grass carp to escape captivity.  The only reason your area may not restrict them is because the damage has already been done by non-sterile grass carp escaping captivity.  Suggesting their use over a wide area is very irresponsible.
* You still do not understand the ecology of aquatic insects.  They do travel.  That is a basic premise that even a fledgling biologist should understand.
Perhaps you should research my profile a bit more, I am an aquatic habitat biologist who is known across North America and Europe for my habitat designs.

+Spring Creek Actually it might be you who needs to brush up a bit. Here in MO, grass carp are sold for ponds in local hardware stores along with other fish to stock ponds with. And since we would not be connected to any other water way, there are very few aquatic insects that will migrate over dry land to get into a pond. While you speak of what is dangerous, you might want to study each states laws first before writing stuff online as if you are some sort of expert. I have built ponds in CA, WA, OR and now in MO. All of them are not in anyway connected to each of those states water ways and thus were legal to have most any kind of fish we could get to live there. And in each of those states, there is no laws on grass carp if it is a private pond not connected to those state's water way or near them. Now, if I was close to a major river, creek, or any lake, especially the great lakes, then I would not use grass carp. I would instead use common koi carp as they also eat most water weeds and grasses, especially milfoil.

You might want to brush up on your aquatic insect ecology.  Releasing anything other than sterile grass carp should also be a felony.  I am not aware of the habitats you have designed or managed, but your suggestions here are very dangerous!

+Spring Creek The only predator but that migrates to ponds that are not connected via creeks or underground water source, would be the oarsman. And they not only eat mosquitos, but also bite young fry and cause infections that eventually kill the fry off. Having a shallow area for dragonfly to hunt and lay their eggs will help control the oarsman. As for water weed control, grass carp work very well at this and can be harvested and eaten as a food fish. And to control the grass carp population would be the crappie. In TN it has become a commercial food fish and is quickly replacing the talapia in stores and restaurants. The crappie is an indiscriminate predatory fish that I prefer over bass for flavor and texture. So, plenty of rocks for hiding places and plenty of plants with the right eco system to keep it all under control and thriving. BTW, I've been working with aquaculture since I was a kid, that is over 50 years at it now. Just might know a thing or two that work best outside secular box type concepts.

+D Taylor +Azri'el Collier In any pond that is aerobic enough for fish, the mosquitoes pose no real threat since the predatory insects eat them faster than mosquito fish ever will. Ponds that fluctuate in the summer can support mosquitoes , but that is more for much larger ponds than in this video. Let the native bugs take care of the situation and keep the pond full. Clearing water in this type of pond will also lead to a pond choked out with plants growing from the bottom after a few years. Lots more can be learned in this forum....
