If I build a pond after this tutorial. Do I need to be the least bit worried about the safety of my fish. There are a lot of wading birds where I live.

WOW, Great Job on this pond. Thankfully, I saw your video as i was starting my pond about 10 month's ago. I got a lot of pond equipment and fish from a friend and followed along with your video's. Eric, my wife is totally impressed and so am i. I could not get the five foot depth (sandy Florida) but managed to get four feet in the deep end. The videos are awesome, you are obviously passionate about your work, and it comes through in the videos. Thanks again

I live in Auz and just want to say its a pleasure watching your videos and really informative. Love your work :-) you and your team are amazing and you make it look easy but boy I can appreciate its not always. I'm struggling to do my little area. At the moment i'm actually doing a stream/waterfall to inground IBC for my turtle and I'm having trouble getting my head around the construction. Your videos have given me some ideas though so hopefully I can get the result I am aiming for :-) Thank you for taking the time to share

Watched from beginning to end and I must say that was excruciatingly thorough. Beautiful pond and I love the depth. Unfortunately alot of people can't build a pond this deep due to soil conditions, water table, and municipal ordinances. Thanks for taking the time to film all this. Btw: That is the crappiest soil I've ever seen.

I just watched through again for the second time! Such great info and top tips... Top notch. Eric, those waterfall spillway filters would sell like hot cakes in the UK. We have nothing even nearly as good this side of the pond. Tangential pond returns are like hens teeth over here too, you just can't find decent ones anywhere. One question... what make of bottom drain do you use? It looks a great robust unit.

What is the approximate material cost for the liner, skimmer, filter, drain, etc, not the landscaping? Do you have plans or a material list for a pond either this same size, or slightly smaller, 12' diameter? Your videos are very straight forward and I would feel confident on tackling this myself.
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 7 years ago
We can absolutely hook you up with the materials list needed to complete this pond or one slightly smaller. We hand hold through the installation process too if you get the pond get though our company. Rosemary's pond kit is 9,500.00 including all the liner, pond filters, pond lighting, pumps and such. We can customize a pond kit to what ever size pond you are planning for your yard. email me direct if you want more details. eric@theponddigger.com

why are there no bubbles in the centre of the pond coming from bottom filter?
what are the running costs of such a pond per anem? great series of videos really enjoyed them and learned a lot.
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 7 years ago
We had the bubbles off for a calm video shot at the end. The bubbles from the bottom drain can be ran on a timer so you have this calm look during the day and the bubbles run at night to sweep the bottom of the pond.

This pond costs the home owner approximately 75.00 to 100.00 a month for electricity. We do live in California where electrical costs are high.

Eric,  I added cement in my new pond to hold stones in place.  I know about muriatic acid to get the PH right.  Do I pour the muriatic acid directly into the pond?  How long does it need to be in there until I can drain it and add fish?  Do I need to do it a few times?  I have a 5,000 pond.  Thx.  Vincent
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+emily fiorentino I will usually do an ACID bath on the concrete mortar joints. Rubber boots, thick rubber gloves, safety goggles strapped to my face, a good respirator and I go 50 percent acid and 50 percent water in a sprayer. Hit the joints hard and heavy and rinse it within 5 minutes working my way around the pond. Do that a couple time and then I fill the pond up and monitor the ph. Go for it!

Turned out great!. Im building the chlorinated pool version with a diving rock and swim spa jets. The round deck will be getting a round redwood hot tub and I will build another square deck opposite side of the pool for lounging. Would have been nice to see a 360 view all of the way around this pond and to have gotten another look at the finished life support. Did you guys build a little structure over it? Wind, rain, sun, and freezing temps here in Texas!
We wount be able to use palm trees and bamboo either ;).

+archangel don't be fooled hey. lots of information on these videos but good luck tackling it yourself. He obviously has a head on his shoulders and you can't learn what he knows from university or college either. to even attempt a pond you should have a pretty broad knowledge and experience base for the building envelop first. the construction world looks easy at times when pros tackle it but you don't get to hear him or anyone bitching about having a sore back or squished fingers. very difficult work if you want it done right!

Nice vids, real quality footage and camera work, love the vids with al the history about koi with the koi "guru"
Question though, you were really anxious to have the third flow running on the left of the waterfall but its not really running, what happened ?
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+Klontman Yes the camera guy is a crazy perfectionist and it shows in his work. We just shot some new footage for koi discussions that are very historical. For your question we did get a small flow over the area. Just a trickle is what we wanted. We did turn the waterfall down a couple times during filming for the sake of the audio for the video. Thanks for watching!

A small 1ft deep area to one side might be nice for the fish to swim close while being able to sit and put your feet in the water. The current setup of high rocks seems tough to reach down to the water.
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+aguyandhiscomputer Good feedback. The deck is fun to sit on with your feet in the water and the very first rock we placed is amazing to sit on with your legs in the water above your calves. It was hard to film those areas of interaction but I agree with your way of thinking 100%

+David Sanchez David to answer your question, on smaller ponds he installed like a large tub that probably had at least a foot radius and was about 2 or so feet deep. It was a little alcove for smaller koi to hide from predators like raccoons. If you're interested, I can find the video where he displayed this and discussed it. Let me know if you need me to find it.

Awesome build! The pond project was a long time coming and it turned out amazingly well! I was particularly blown away by the contrast of the fish against the water, shows how depth can really play a part and having your fish's colors really pop. I also liked how the waterfall turned out. The multiple steps and gentle flow is just right. Great work Eric!
