I did the top of my pond with concrete block and dug down 3 ft and filled the block with the clay dirt .I have had my koi for 11 years and built my own filters with lava rock and no skimmer no uv and no bottom drain and have not lost a fish .So ponds are only as hard as you make them .My pond I had to rebuild because something chewed through my other liner .I just did it in March and it is no May and it is getting established now .I am from VA also

wow well the 125 came a long ways to this day, right now i'm wokring on getting it back on track, ordering some new plants, etc, restocking some fish. but i'm going to get it where it needs to be.

Yeah well I've heard about u can use a fountain so it don't freeze all the way if u do 2-3 ft I remember seeing a video of ur pond when u were feeding the fish one of the last Times before winter right when u uploaded

if you have a GOOD biofilter you won't need substrate though i put it in my pond since i think it would be healthier but it does make a mes, yeah you can keep them outside i have a video where i show my pond in the winter with snow on the ground, and for utah i'd imagine you'd have to make a 3-4 foot deep pond

Thx, my question is after u have the pond either a liner one or a plastic one do u need substrate too like u would in a fish tank, also can u keep regular goldfish n the black moors out in the pond all year long, it snows in here I'm in Utah

I'm,on a,phone n idk how to private in here but I just have a few questions like how do you clean the pond water changes etc, what kind of fish can u keep all year round I wanted to keep some Oki some comet gold fish some lion head and some black moor but at this time I'm still in the planning process,don't wanna rush into anything

I feel so much better now that I know big foot or a bob cat isnt going to hurt you.. OMG this video is cracking me up. I learned nothing about building a pond but i found out about the hawk and the kids in the woods, found out you live in the middle of nowhere, you have chickens,geese,ducks and an elusive bob cat stalking you down. Your scared of snakes, you have a hoe, and you started college. Thanks for all the useless info. lol...Not going to be ugly because you did make me laugh..

i keep the highest grade japanese koi and can tell you the water quality has to be as good as an aquarium, i build ponds for a living so i can assure you i know what i am talking about ,high nitrate and ammonia present in pond water will damage and kill koi,

no....they don't need near perfect water conditions they're carp, they can live in rivers ponds lakes etc on koi farms they are raised in mud ponds....mud ponds. the location has nothign to do with it yes its open but i have a net over my pond and a bird that gets moved around. also do you see how the dirt comes up, it doesn't flood to the point where it gets higher then that, but if this pond wasn't partially raised they could swim out, and yes the pond updates are on here is it finished no

is the finished pond on here,? be surprised by the outcome of it, the site picked for the pond is a no no , too open and if like you say you get streams running down in the rainy season it will contaminate the water , koi need as near perfect water conditions you can get ,

Use PVC pipes for the plastic net frame, it will prevent fish from escaping during floods and also prevent wild animals such as birds from eating your fish if you also apply net to the top.

If you want to save on materials, you can also do a pvc and plastic net enclosure all around the pond, so even if the waters rise, your fish will still be enclosed in plastic net walls.
