What I want to create is a simple aboveground pond for plants and different species of goldfish that hope to breed. I think keeping them behind the house in 24-inch-tall cinderblock ponds is going to be the way to go. I have to give my man Kevin props for this idea. As you know, I am big on having a plan, so let me know of any advice or ideas you have. I have never worked with concrete before, but I am thinking I am going to have to use it to make it level. This shouldn't be too bad, but traveling to the unknown makes me nervous. I put up two garden ponds and the wife didn't know, so how tough can it be? Ideally, I want them to be easy to get into and also be able to sit in between them or on the side of them. if anyone has any advice on how to build a concrete garden pond or just working with concrete, let me know! Sadly, if the run offs and water will be too dirty, nothing will grow in it and all the fish will die Every time.

The problem with using run off water or rain water like that; is the pollutants. So you will need plenty of water plants to filter it. You may want to wait 2-3 weeks after the plants are planted before putting fish in it so they dont die of certain chemicals; it depends on if you can filter the water also, for at least 3-4 days before putting plants in. During that time you can actually get baby feeder fish (which are normally baby goldfish) and put them in a fish tank inside the house till all the plants and ecosystem in the water is settled. By then there also might be some algae, which the fish will love!

It also depends on the area you live in. For instance, where I live at, you have to have a pond 3ft deep because of the frost during winter + a few more inches for any ice on top; just so the fish will survive the cold. So you might want to double check how deep you want yours!

Put some Tabasco sauce on em and they jump around in your stomach for a couple of seconds. And if you rapid fire them, it's really cool.

@Dustinsfishtanks yeah, if the roof water is filtered, shouldnt be too bad. best rule of thumb for ponds, is go as big as you can, first time around. depth of water is more important than width or length. keeps water temps more stable. but i guess as long as they are only goldfish ponds, they could be really small like that. cant wait to see updates on it as it gets going.

@10kpondguy I don't dig :) you'll notice my pond are all above ground.... but the idea is good, I think i can pull off the roof water if it goes into a barrel first with carbon...

hey bro, maybe i can hit you up on livechat if we're ever on it at the same time, but yeah i'm actually building a pond too (bigger pond, fish would be too big for the old 400 gallon) well i'm using cement blocks too its halfway above and below. if you want details on how i did it bro let me know.

just build a net around the pond to keep herring out just drive some tall wood posts like 4-5 feet out of the corners then just put some pool screen or any kind of net around it and put a ceiling either more net or clear plastic what ever works

Just my opinion..dig your hole2.5ft deep. pour a 3in foundation around top base of hole. then fill about 3 in of concrete in bottom. add about 3-4 rows of bricks on the top foundation, drop in 20-45mil liner, depending on how deep your pockets run. put a nice border around the top of decorative concrete blocks. set up a basic 55gal filter barrel filter, fill it up, let cycle, good to go. dont let water run off from roof in your pond. bad idea. you dont want that in there. a net cover helps too.

Dustin use a fake heron, cause Herons don't bother another heron if its already feeding. Or you could put a net over your pond. Generations are F2 or so on btw

If you want a level base you can just dig a 6-7 inch hole to the dimentions you want then fill it with quickrete...you'll need a few bags but you just add water pour it in the hole and because it's a liquid you got a level base :) ...that's what I would do anyways
