I think you were right about that wood left over being for the base but it should have been shown in the plans.Be carful what you do with the bamboo as we made the mistake of planting it straight into the ground and it spreads like wildfire and I spend a lot of time trying to cut it back

Have you decided on what fish your having may I suggest ORANDAS fantails or maybe even blackmoores these fish grow to a standard size and in that size pond you can have at least 10 they will grow larger later on and will be a very entertaining fish as I have them in my 300 gallon pond also

Hi, Rick, First of all your garden looks great. One thing though, Buddha statuettes are not meant to be garden ornaments! They are similar to Christian's Jesus on a cross. What you wound NOT do to the Cross, you should NOT do to the Buddha statuettes either.

Rick, Thank you for your understanding. If you are really interested in the Buddhist philosophies, you can visit a Thai Buddhist temple. I know of at least two in UK. One in Leeds and another in London. It was in Wimbledon area when I was over there in late 70's early 80's. But that was a rented building. They may have moved. You can see for yourself how Buddha images are treated and see examples of a plinth. This could even be subject for your future videos.

When I said I (or even some one else) may be offended I did NOT mean you had intentions in doing so. It is the understanding  that is more important.

To many westerners Buddhism is considered as philosophies. But to a lot of people in mostly Asia it is considered as a religion. Although there is no the ultimate GOD for Buddhists, Buddha is sometimes seen as one.
If you had a chance to visit Thai temples as I suggested above you may see differences between Thai and Japanese arts and cultures. But it is the same Buddha. Interpretations may differ from country to country. Rites and rituals are different also.

If you happen to come over to Thailand please let me know I will be glad to be your guide..
Rickvanman - Variety Channel
Rickvanman - Variety Channel - 8 years ago
+tavit lertritsumpun Thank you for this. As someone who has always had a quiet reverence for basic Buddhist philosophies, this is actually quite important to me personally, to get this right. I also did a little web research on this subject and I now understand it is actually a pretty big deal, so thank you again for bringing it to my attention.

I have no desire to offend those who live their lives according to philosophies that I particularly admire, especially when it is through my own ignorance, but more importantly, I don't want my own actions to inadvertently betray my intentions.

You may see them as garden ornaments, but to me, I'd like to think they have more meaning than mere ornaments. Although I am not a practicing Buddhist, the Buddha representation remains the focal point of my garden contemplations, it's why I have them in the first place, and that is why it's important to me that I make an effort, now I have this new knowledge, to address their placement out of respect and my own intention to continue taking seriously the philosophies they represent.

Before I read your reply I was actually looking at plinths, so I'm glad you mentioned them too. The chances are, the statues will end up being seen in future videos, that's just the nature of what I do, but as the Buddha talks about finding the middle path, I too can take steps to find a balance/compromise. The act of using a plinth may only be a symbolic gesture, but the Intention and reason for using it, is what truly matters. Hopefully this will translate across in any future appearances.
I may even make a point of explaining some of this in a future video to help others understand these philosophies.

If anyone wants to get offended beyond that, then I will honor and respect their right to do so, but with a clear conscience.
tavit lertritsumpun
tavit lertritsumpun - 8 years ago
Buddha is the savant of Buddhism. So his statue or image represent Buddha in that sense. It is normally used for worshiping for those who have Buddhist faith. It is usually situated higher from the ground on some sort of plinth. Especially for Thai people Buddha images are revered so any other use of such statues will be viewed as disrespectful. I know many westerners (not just British) use Buddha's head as ornament, bookends. Example of this is the famous footballer Ronaldo has a beautiful white Buddha statue in sitting pose  about 4 foot high placed at the front of his house on the ground. I saw this on some BBC news item which he gave an opportunity for BBC to visit his home. It was just passing shot on the news, when I saw it I felt the same thing. I guess placing on the ground has the worse effects for me and many other of the same faith. Placing on some plinth may lessen the effect somewhat but it is still garden ornament in its purpose. I felt less offended to see the brown one was placed on the seat of the pond.
Rickvanman - Variety Channel
Rickvanman - Variety Channel - 8 years ago
+tavit lertritsumpun Consideration is something the world could use more of :o) This is information is extremely interesting to me, and something I was unaware of, so thank you for bringing it to my attention.
I am curious, is it the fact that it is on the ground, or that it has been made a focal point of the garden that is causing this potential disrespect? What could be changed to make it better, or at least less offensive to others who have the Buddhist faith?
tavit lertritsumpun
tavit lertritsumpun - 8 years ago
No I meant the way they are situated (on the ground) and as a garden ornament that may be seen as disrespectful to others who has Buddhist faith. Think of it this way if I had a Jesus picture as a floor mat and I didn't show them off publicly, no one would know or be offended by that. But if I show it publicly I am sure some Christians would not like it. By not showing it I think I give consideration to others (Christians).

tavit lertritsumpun

Rickvanman - Variety Channel
Rickvanman - Variety Channel - 8 years ago
+tavit lertritsumpun A very interesting clash of cultures. Buddha statues over here are viewed as a symbol of peace and tranquility, they inspire a more centered state of being.

Rick,
The music is great in this vid...good classic stuff! Also the production values are wonderful...did you upgrade to editing at 4K? The lightening/contrast/colors and sound is very nicely polished.

Looks like  you are getting that backyard Feng Shui'd slowly but surely into, shall we say, a nice little Japanese Gardenish kinda thing...your own personal little Shangri La...lol. Maybe you'll be bitten by the Garden Pond to start a Koi Pond, in the future. I've built two Koi Ponds for myself and helped two of my friends build them as well. Do you follow James Wong(Botanist that has done shows on backyard gardening/Herbalism...etc.)? If you need a pointer or two on Garden/Koi Ponds...I've learned quite a bit through trial and error...lol, and have had good info. passed on to me, and would gladly pass it on to you. I think that Garden Pond you just built might be problematic for you during winter time...being that it is above ground.

Cheers mate,Tommy
Tommy Lee
Tommy Lee - 8 years ago
+rickvanman You are most welcome Rick,  yup no doubt that a Koi pond can be a major pain in the butt, it truly is an art to getting them balanced and staying clear on their own. Still if you do go with goldfish, I recommend getting yourself a few Algae Eaters...Chinese and Loaches are nice...and of course you know that Plecostomus are great at taking care of Algae, and Crawfish too do a good job. Water snails are nice...BUT they will eat the hell out of many types of ornamental water plants. Maybe an Archer fish would be fun, way cool to watch them knock bugs off with squirts of water! Anyway looking forward to seeing what you do with the Garden Pond, and how your backyard Shangri La evolves into!

+Tommy Lee Thanks Tommy. Still filming in 1080 - only at 60fps. I used to keep Koi in a big pond a number of years ago but it was a constant battle with green water, cats, and maintaining filter systems etc. It was nice to watch them but it was pretty full-on. I'm thinking more in terms of goldfish with this one LOL!

2:24 The backyard looks so different Rick. I remember when you had the big stones on the ground and the planter boxes with your vegetables in them. Now there is gravel or small rocks on the ground and a "shed"! Wow, where did that come from? Did you build a new shed there or is that a transplant from the allotment? Even the fence walls are different, they are black? Everything looks so different yet also very nice. I see old familiar items in the backyard and new things also? The pond will also make a nice addition. You have made some nice improvements to the backyard. I will keep watching the video to find out more about the pond. I am curious as to whether you are going to put fish or aquatic life in it or are going to use it to "swim" in (smiling). Maybe both? I am just teasing. I will keep watching the video. Thanks for sharing. Christine :-) 12:47 Rick, if you don't like the look of that bench, you can always put garden cushions on it, and then just take the cushions in at night in case it rains, etc. It is just a thought?

Rick, that's Beautiful! I also love BOTH new benches, and the trees behind the pond was Perfect! I'm quite shocked at how wonderful it turned out. I'm not used to "Comfort Areas," being someone that's always just running to get things done, so Comfort is foreign to me. Only proves that I need more of it, and this is just Gorgeous! I think you have talked me into making a space like this for myself when I start my backyard remodel next week. As usual I was being all organized thinking, and never even considered a nice quiet comfortable place to relax. Funny thing is, I could do this with a lot of things I already own. Maybe I had it in my mind all along, and didn't even know it. What a great video. Thank you so much, Sheila PS Now I will have to find a great water feature for my yard. I sure love yours.

+Ryan Hare Hi Ryan. I used to have a Labrador & they do make great company. I've often thought about getting another dog, but I think with my particular lifestyle, a pet of any kind can also become a bit of a metaphorical ball and chain. I see how friends and relatives are often tied-down and their options restricted by ownership of their pets. This is what is stopping me getting one at the moment.

Thanks Rick for sharing your creative ideas, I loved that lay out at the end with the bamboos. I wonder if you will put a potted lily in the pond? A wonderful backyard sanctuary.

Looks good Rick. It is a shame that you didn't put the half-logs on the bottom - it would have been a lot more stable and secure I'm sure. Thanks for sharing though - I love your videos and always look forward to them :-)

That pond is terrible quality, the woods a joke, bet it cost a bit too. Nothing against you Rick but I think you could easily improve it's build quality.

Hi there, we are sorry to hear this. Our wood has a 20 year guarantee against rot. It is pressure treated Swedish timber of the highest quality and with an even smooth finish.

+The Green Knight you just can't be that lazy. you could cut it with scicors in the yard this size.

+Augustas Makrickas Which part of low-maintenance did you not understand? Grass needs to be cut on a regular basis. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you Mr high and mighty?

+rickvanman some good ideas here: https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=landscape%20back%20yard%20simple&rs=typed&0=landscape%7Ctyped&1=back%7Ctyped&2=yard%7Ctyped&3=simple%7Ctyped It does not need to be with expensive materials and etc. just look at the porportions of green areas, pathways, vegetation and water element. :)

+rickvanman Hey, Rick, Sorry, I might have been too grumpy. I'm a full time working/student architect. So i've seen lots of the spaces likes this, designed a few. What got on my nerves, were we little cheap looking figures, which made the whole yard look cheesy. (once again). You have beautiful textures and colors all around. The red bricks, glowing white windowframes, glass. I think a better option would have been to leave grow some grass, while still leaving the yellowish stones for pathways. Water element is nice. Here's a look http://s32.postimg.org/kfyafe0w5/0111_youtube.jpg Did not have too much free time to make it more realistic, just a concept. Cheers.

+Adam Evans Your "opinion" came across as hateful and bit disrespectful. Rick clearly went for what he liked. Next time, think about what you say and maybe word it better. It was not a nice comment regardless of "opinion" - as you like to call it.

+markybyeah Because I gave an opinnion on the quality of the item, I'm bringing Rick down? He know's what I mean? Where's the issue? Rick is clearly a clever man, and can clearly see what I meant by the comment as the things is pre-fab. I didn't insult Rick so don't worry about it.
