dear friend, how are you doing.

i need your help in one issue. I'm planing to do a raised koi pond but I'm stuck in fixing window frame.

my question is:

how to fix the frame into concrete block? and is steel affecting water chemistry, i mean should i leave steel as it is or should i coat it with something for waterproof so not to affect water chemistry?

thanks

Eric... You "Rock" the pond world! Hey buddy, I am using "feng shui" principals to locate my waterfall and pond. I am therefor, in a situation where my pond should be located in the north, and my waterfall feature in the northeast. I am on a small lot with a septic tank also in the north/north-east location. I don't have enough space for a decent sized koi pond and waterfall. So here is my plan... A six tier waterfall over a 12 foot span, landing in a 3 x 5 pond with a three foot depth. This leads to a 25 foot x 2 foot wide channel which is 3 feet deep and sloping down to 4 feet, where it enters the other 5' x 8' pond with 5 foot depth. I will have drains, and skimmers on each pond, and three jets in the channel aimed toward the larger pond. I am running the channel between my house and septic with two feet on either side.
Do you see many problem, using a 25 foot channel to connect the ponds? Or how about proximity to the septic?
Thanks for the awesome video series! and here is a plug for "Helix"
Thanks, Paul

No, "parameter" is the correct term. He is talking about the rough 8' x 11' dimensions of the pond and marking the maximum dimensions of a rectangle in which he can place the pond using that kit. "Perimeter" refers to the actual path that the pond edge takes. He uses the parameters he set to guide his painting of the perimeter.

Hey there! I am nearly ready to do my little retaining wall and mark for excavation! Leslie (via email) said part 2 -- plumbing - was removed for updating. I know each waterfall / skimmer set up might be a little different, but I was wondering if any of your videos (or anywhere on your website) might address how to properly lay out the pipe between the two, at least. Can you suggest any resources for me? Thanks!!!!!!

Soon enough I'm going to have a house built in a 500sqm property. My dad and I are contemplating whether to use all that space for the house itself, or if some of it could be allocated for a garden of some sorts. I really like the idea of ponds and I'm thinking of implementing something similar to your video (amazing series by the way).

I want the house to be interesting and I realize that that needs effort (which is why a lot of other people's homes in my town are bland, not a lot of effort is put into making them stand out), and I think I'm up for it.

I just watched the series from episode 1 through to episode 23 in one sitting. I was dead set keen to see the end result, BUT, it was a bit like a good murder mystery series, and I didn't want to wreck the final revelation by jumping ahead. I was actually a bit disappointed that I didn't witness the pond being filled with the water - but I can be overly romantic at times. (LOL)

You have a good team working for you - terrific to see a boss being so respectful to his boys and working as hard as they do.

Congratulations on doing such a great job, not only of the video, but of the pond itself. I'm sure the homeowners were very happy with the outcome and that you and your team would have been mighty proud. I'm from Australia, so just out of interest, how much would you charge ball park figure for a similar contract.

And a last few of questions - Is the goat the homeowner's or yours? And for my little girl's information, what's it's name? And for my wife's information, how long did the flowers last with the goat around?

Thanks again - excellent!!

ThePondDigger - 7 years ago
+Mark NEWLAN Mark thank you so much for the comment and feedback. Makes me smile we had you gripped with the video!

I love and respect my team! They are fantastic! To answer your questions -

We installed that pond on my property down by my horse corrals and actually removed the pond shortly after installation to film another water feature tutorial series! That's how dedicated we are to teaching on YouTube. :)

The goat is our family pet. Her Name is Billie Jean and she travels back and forth to The Pond Digger Headquarter in a car with my wife 5 days week. :) I hope that makes your daughter smile.

This feature sells for roughly 7,500.00 without landscape plantings. Have a great day!

I'm a total newb, not even a handy man but I may be buying a piece of property with alot of possibilities. I love your videos! I have a very basic question. If the man made pond is relatively far from your home, your wires/cords are run under ground? in PVC? or some flexible tubing? Do you simply plug it all in to an outside outlet or is something more needed where it connects to the house? Again, real newbie here, excuse my lack of knowledge. Thx again!
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+Troy Docimo We're here for your support so no questions are bad! The cords on most pond pumps are around 25 feet long. If your pond is farther away from your home then that, you will need to run an extension cord initially but will likely want to have an electrical outlet ran out to the location of the pond. Check your building codes or call a local electrician for some advise. Best of luck to you on your project.

+Jeannie Rasmussen Ok, if it was not sarcastic then you must be a little slow. It's not about me being a "word cop" or you playing to be a "superhero pond digger's defender", it's about conveying accurate information. If someone says you need a 1 inch long screw but he meant a 1 inch wide screw, well the screw you get might not fit right? Get it?
Parameter and perimeter mean completely different things lady, and if you don't get that then maybe you should go back and finish highschool.
Jeannie Rasmussen
Jeannie Rasmussen - 8 years ago

Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei - 8 years ago
+Jeannie Rasmussen It's not as if it was a spelling error, it's another word altogether with a totally different meaning. A spelling error rarely has any bad consequences, a word that does not mean what was intended might. So no, your sarcastic comment about the "word cops" is not valid, sorry.
Jeannie Rasmussen
Jeannie Rasmussen - 8 years ago
+Galileo Galilei on no! Its the "word cops"
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+Galileo Galilei The pressure of film...... :) Rubber liner is a more affordable method for building ponds and more sustainable in many areas. Concrete cracks and leaks in freeze thaw zones and in areas withe movement like earthquake areas. To install a concrete pond correctly we suggest shotcrete and rebar like you would pour a swimming pool. We do install in this fashion as well but not as frequently and is certainly beyond the abilities of most DIYers. Thanks for watching.

After watching nearly all of your videos I set out to build my pond. I'm an American living in London and man, do I wish I had available to me some of the materials and products you use in your constructions. Firstly, all that beautiful stone. Yesterday I drove about an hour south of London to buy what was listed as sandstone. At least a couple tons of it. When I got there what I saw looked nothing like the photo in the listing. It was bright rusty orange in places and falling apart where they had been in contact with damp soil. What I have discovered since getting all of this stuff home is that it's not sandstone but ironstone. So basically I bought a couple tons of rusted metal. I have seen some ads for ironstone pebbles for aquariums, although the reviewers did mention it colouring the water a yellowish colour. But aside from discolouration, do you know if this stone is useable at all in my pond? Or will the oxidised heavy metals kill my fish and whatever wildlife? Help!!

The California drought has taught me many valuable lessons, and the most important is that "water is life". Over this winter, I will be studying this tutorial and building a pond in the backyard. The idea is to store rain water, have an emergency water supply, and give wildlife a helping hand.
I love these detailed videos, I can tell that that Mr. Triplet is a pro, careful, contentious, particular, and experienced. I am proud to use him as my pond mentor.

I have a question: I am thinking of how to utilize a retainer wall as 2 sides of a pond using a liner. Can I use Beckett Pond Tape to adhere it to the wall then stack rocks against it? I also saw a product made in Australia called Grip Clip which was a 3 meter length of 2 piece plastic that fits into eachother. The female piece gets bolted into the wall, the liner go over it, and the second piece clips it in place. Do you have that product

+Robert Preston We use a liner termination bar to attach liner to walls like that. We get them in 10' strips.

What about the best location for a pond in terms of sunlight?  Also, there is no place in my backyard where I can avoid the effect of trees.  I have none on my property, but am surrounded by them from my neighbor's properties.  In the fall, there will be a significant amount of leaves.  What is the best way to deal with leaves?
John
John - 8 years ago
+ThePondDigger Thanks for the detailed and quick response.  I'm also reading that it's important to have a filter that includes UV filtration when the pond is exposed to a lot of hours in the sun.   Would you agree with that?
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+ddenuci You might consider using multiple skimmers on your pond depending on the shape you design to manage leaf debris. In the fall it is not uncommon for pond owners to cover the pond with a netting to capture the heavy fall out of leaves. The netting goes up just before the leaves drop and comes off after the leaves have dropped. We have ponds in full sun and ponds in full shade. Optimally you will want a balance of sun and shade on the pond. Water lilies won't bloom unless you get 4 hours of direct sun on the pond.

+harilal kv Hey Harilal, As of June 1st our construction and service calendar became booked out for the rest of our 2015 season. So you did in fact catch us in a transition period. As the phones continue to ring for pond support and services, we of course didn't want to tell any of our loyal fans, followers, subscribers and new potential clients to kick rocks during our growth period. So we organized a small group of affiliates that we could refer service, maintenance and construction too during our expansion. The FInal week of May 2015 and first week of June was quite possibly a little dicey as we were training employees to gather information from incoming reaches and respond, refer and transfer information to our affiliates in a fashion that will continue to serve our pond community in the best way we can by connecting people with people. Brandon in fact is one of our affiliates we are referring reaches and leads to. If he didn't respond or meet with you in a timely fashion than a call to us explaining your dissatisfaction would give us a red flag to understand his track record and give us the opportunity to extend a different potential service provider to your for your project. While I don't completely agree with your critical reviews of The Pond Digger on our social media platforms, you are entitled to your freedom of speech. I will humbly accept some of the liability because after all I did try and serve you by connecting you with Brandon and his company, Real American LP. If you would like to schedule an appointment with The Pond Digger organization I can Schedule you now for Spring of 2016 and we will serve you beyond your expectations. With Humility, Eric Triplett - The Pond Digger

ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 9 years ago
+Jack DiRocco A DIY project could get you a super nice pond for a very affordable cost. Depending on the type of fish you want to raise of course will depend on the life support you will need for the pond. A pond kit for a wonderful eco-system like we installed in this series starts just under a thousand bucks for a basic kit and up to a couple thousand for a more advanced life support system. If you are looking for professional installation you will need to be prepared to part with somewhere between 5 to 10 thousand for a good pond. Hope that helps. If you are looking for a professional installation I would love to connect you with one of the pond guys in our Authorized Helix Contractors Network. Let me know!

I am creating a pond in our yard for ducks.  We know we want a waterfall to keep the water moving, and skimmer for leaves and a filter to clean out the waste.  I haven't seen the installation of a filter listed.  Do you do it in one of your videos?  Also, do you have to line the whole wall of each level with boulders?   We are also trying to do all of this on a budget.  I have found some kits that include the mechanics we need, but don't really know anything about the different brands.  Are there ones that you would stay away from?

All the pond equipment will help you achieve your goal. Some equipment just performs better than others. Of course we gravitate towards Helix Life Support Pond Equipment but don't use it on every pond installation. Consider installing a BOG FILTER like in our Patio Pond video series for your duck pond. Trick is keeping the ducks from destroying your bog plants. Best of luck to you!

Hello Mr. Pond Digger.. :) Amazing information you have here on you tube. thank you so much for such great information. I have a question conceding my 2 Lab/Golden Mix dogs.. As they are water dogs and love to go in the water. If I build a pond in my yard and the swim in it often.. I don't know if they will for sure.. but they love to swim. Anyways if they swim or go in the koi pond is this going to be detrimental to the health of the pond???
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 10 years ago
If you use sizable rock the dogs will not mess up the pond too bad. An important thing to consider is this -  you want the aquatic plants to have a chance to become established before the dogs use the pond very often. The aquatic plants really help to keep the pond balanced so if the dogs tear the plants up before they become established you're ecosystem might have a hard time balancing. I remember one time we built a pond for a couple labs several years ago. The homeowner kept the dogs out of the pond for the first 3 months and it was awesome!

We live in Redlands. Named after the clay dirt. On occasion we will have to bring in some top soil for backfill but for the most part we work it out when digging with the jackhammer we break up most of the heavy clumps.

Hi Eric. In a typical pond kit how big is the liner and underlayment? You marked out  8 x 11  for this pond. I am getting a 20 x 25 pond kit but will be closer to a depth of 3.5 feet at the bottom, because of our weather here. Would I still be able to mark mine out at 20 x 25 for this kit? I don't want to run short of liner, thanks
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 10 years ago
You can add the fish back to the pond immediately if you are conditioning the water and removing chlorine and chloramines. A typical pond cleaning will take a few hours. We are editing a Spring Pond Care video at this time so stay tuned! It should save you some time on your learning curve. Thanks for watching!
Mitch iam

I watched all the videos, they are great. I had thought about putting a bottom drain in to help remove solids, but since I intend to do the gravel design, I will probably have to do the annual drain and clean, even with the bottom drain.. My only question is how long before I can put the fish back in and also( I guess this is two questions) how and where to keep the fish until the pond is ready?
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 10 years ago
There are several different pond construction styles. This video is an eco-system pond that requires and annual drain and clean. The gravel helps to digest the muck all year long. At the end of the year you drain and clean the pond, including the gravel. If you decide to build a pond without gravel then you install bottom drain, settlement tank and UV filter to help manage the pond muck and keep the water clear. I love both construction styles. Stay tuned as we will be filming more construction styles. Watch our Koi Pond Fundamentals video for more information.

Thanks. Another thing. I just saw a video on You Tube from a guy on Pond Supply. He stated that it was not a good idea to put rocks in the pond. He stated that all this does is create bacteria and muck that smells and the pond owner has to continually clean out buckets of muck. That worries me because I fully intend to put rocks in my pond the way you showed me on the video. Should I have concerns about this? Thanks

The excavation dimension is 8' x 11'. Once the rock is installed the water surface shrinks to approximately 6' x 9'. The liner size on this install was 15' x 20' because we were about 3' deep. The liner was a little oversized but made installation easy.

very cool. one thing though: In its common meaning, the term 'parameter' is used to identify a characteristic, a feature, a measurable factor that can help in defining a particular system. A parameter is an important element to take into consideration for the evaluation or for the comprehension of an event, a project or any situation. the word you're looking for is 'perimeter': the length of the outline of a shape.

We installed a sick pond for a group of Alligator Gars!! The Pond Is 10' x 24' x 5' deep and the gars are getting HUGE!!!! The pond in this video series is a little small for a herd of Gars but you could certainly start off some youngins in this pond.

I would plan on digging your pond just outside the drip line of the tree if possible and consider The Helix Pond Skimmer for your Large Leaf debris problems for sure.

Great videos Eric! I have been thinking about installing a pond for long time now. I have had a lot of questions, but never really got them answered. This video series sure helps the weekend warrior, like myself. I have a lot of trees in my backyard, and have been concerned about getting into too many roots. My ideal location is along a spruce tree line. The trees are about 30 years old, with bottom branches reaching out about six feet from the main trucks. Any recommendations?

More great videos, thanks. These will come in very handy when I finally get to this stage of my backyard project. I also need to make the drive over to your store to start deciding on which equipment to use.

Thanks for the feedback Audiofanaticz! Our closest Authorized Helix Retailer to you in Batavia, IL approximately 3.5 hours from awash. Being Fish Friendly is only ONE of the benefits of The Helix Pond Skimmer! What about the other benefits? We should take him up on his guarantee! How will a traditional skimmer be better? I'll be your sponsor! Let's DIG INTO this!

Very excited about this series. I have my pond and stream dug out but haven't bought the liner or waterfall filter yet. So this is perfect timing on the videos. Keep up the great work and enthusiasm. Thanks, from another Weekend Warrior (Ron)

nice vid!! Im getting really tempted on the helix skimmer, Im in Sheboygan, WI, know of any dealers of your product in the area? I found one pond shop called Stienies, and talked to him he said he heard of the skimmer, but guarentees a traditional skimmer will be better, and that once fish get stuck in it they wont go back... Sadly thats not the case, Guy seems more interested in selling me what he wants, not what I want. big bummer!! Looking forward to more parts as I am digging larger now!

All PROS to moving the pond from 8" x 11' to 10' x 25" You will maximize the pond equipment in the video. 8' x 11' pond is the smallest pond I would this pond kit equipment on. This Helix System can handle a 10 x 25 easily.
